Thats the sum of it. If you cant bring yourself to vote for the offerings in your primary, or if the eventual nominee is somebody you cant stomach, dont sit out, and dont vote for the Democrat. Write in Fred Thompsons name.
Why?
By doing so, you send a message that cant be mistaken or spun. It is a message that says:
I am a Republican who wanted to vote for a conservative GOP candidate, but wasnt able to do so. I cant vote for a Democrat, but I cant vote for any of the Republicans, either. So Im writing in the name of the candidate I wish I could have voted for, because he is the kind of candidate I could support.
They have to learn that if they want conservative votes, they have to nominate candidates conservatives would want to vote for.
This strategy is the only one that offers any hope of changing the leftward move of the GOP in the future. Sitting out wont do it - they can spin the reasons why you sat out. Voting Democrat wont do it, they can spin it that the GOP candidates werent liberal enough. Even voting None of the Above wont do it, because that doesnt specify what you want instead of none of the above.
Im pretty sure that if this notion starts to get traction, Fred Thompson will publicly oppose it. Dont worry, and dont listen to him. This isnt really about Fred Thompson. Its about the future of the Republican party. Fred ran because he hoped to influence that, but he failed. Now its time for the rest of us to take a crack at it.
So remember: Just write in Fred Thompsons name when it comes time to cast your vote. (Theres nothing stopping you from writing it in for other offices, either).
And ignore all the squalling that you have to vote GOP because it is marginally less evil than the Democrats. Given the rate of decay were seeing now, even that wont be true (if it really is even now) in a couple more election cycles.

This would help the McCain nomination.
“For crying out loud, this is so stupid. Some of you folks are being played for suckers.”
You’re absolutely correct.
Come idiots are voting for Romney, for example.
I mean, Romney was a life long, 35+ year liberal, actively pro-abortion, anti-RKBA, etc., and changed dramatically about 2 days before annoucing he was running for president. I can’t believe people are so stupid that they are falling for his lies.
Sucker born every minute, I suppose.
Well, "I" sure am. I can't stand any of the rest! ugh!
They might make you forget Conservatives like Fred.
In my state, according to polls, it looks to be between McCain and Huckabee. I really don’t want to vote for either of those two. I could maybe hold my nose and vote for Romney, but he’s double-digits behind. Based on that, I plan to vote for Fred in the primary. I haven’t decided 100%, but I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ll do.
In the general election, though, I will almost certainly vote for the Republican nominee. (Unless it’s pro-choice Giuliani. I still probably would, but man would that be hard.) While four years of Hillary might rejuvenate our party in the long run, it’s really scary what kind of damage she might do.
Missouri does NOT allow write-ins, so don’t bother in MO...magritte
< < vote for the one that closest matches your values. > >
Honey, none of them come close to matching my values.
There is no reason to believe Romney became a Conservative, remarkably enough, just in time for an election. He talks conservative now, but if he gets the nomination and looks for Demonrat and independent votes, he will flip once more, back to where he was before.
You are telling me to vote for a RINO because that is what has been chosen for us by the media and by the folks who keep telling us that we will fall into step because we have no where else to go.
Looks like they are right — but if you keep falling into step, then why even make the effort to select someone you already know the “powers that be” won’t choose? If you are willing to “hold your nose” and vote for Romney/Giuliani/McCain/Huckabee then you will be holding your nose year after year...oh, wait. that is what you have been doing. How many of you told me in 2000 that I had to hold my nose and vote for Bush?
Sorry, but there is no substantive difference among them. Giuliani is a social liberal, conservative on most other issues. Huckabee is a social conservative, and liberal on most other issues. McCain is a war hero who hasn’t done much else right, and Romney is so much of a chameleon that I couldn’t tell you what his position is today until I put my finger into the same wind he’s in.
So, you don’t want to “make a statement” this time because a pretend conservative is better than an admitted liberal? You told me to do that in 2004, and I did. You told me that in 2000, and I did. You told me that in 1996. snd I did. Do you see a pattern here? I do. And I won’t.
The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and to expect the results to be different.
Fred Thompson wouldn’t raise his hand, and I won’t hold my nose anymore. Maybe you don’t, but I need to breathe to live. If I keep holding my nose, I won’t be able to breathe.
2nddivisionVet is right. If you won’t make a stand here, you will keep retreating until there is no where left to which to retreat. Either accept the unconditional surrender you are being asked to make, or make your stand.
I’m going to rembember the Alamo - where we were defeated, but the stand we took stopped the enemy long enough that we were able to regroup and defeat him at San Jacinto.
Vote for Fred Thompson in the primary in the hope of getting an open convention where we certainly can’t get anything worse than we are being offered now. maybe we can take care of the general election at the primary, and if not...it’s time to stop retreating.
NICE CUT!!!
Although I am on the receiving end, I am serious. You did an excellent job on that put down .
I do truly think, however, that you folks in the “send them a message” club are nuts.
Again, you really did wow me.
You go girl!!
“What then, pray tell, would you suggest? Just vote for whoever the Republican nominee happens to be?”
Incredibly simple,eh?
Or you could vote for McCain or Giuliani or Huckabee, which also would have the same effect.
The stewardship of the franchise demands that you do your damnedest with the choices you have. If you insist on making a “protest”, stay home and stop wasting the poll worker’s time. Low turnout sends a bigger message than write-ins that no one ever bothers to ever look at unless the vote is within 100 or so ballots.
There probably won't be a Republican nominee this year. There will be a Democrat and a wannabe-Democrat.
Some choice, huh? Voters get to choose between "do you want to get 100% screwed" and "do you want to get only 90% screwed".
If this is the best the Republican has to offer now- not even a generation after Ronald Reagan- then the Republican party needs to dissolve. It's dead. And the black shame of hell be upon those who have led the way- including George Frigging W. Bush.
LOL. Gotta have a since of humor.
I fully understand, and respect, the motivation behind tactical voting of the lesser evil.
I, however, just can’t do it anymore -— Rove and others bank on the logic tactical voting to force RINOs down conservatives’ throats.
He famously said “F___k the conservatives; where are they gonnna go?”
Well, I’m going off the plantation baby, off the plantation.
Spectacular post.
Call me Davey Crockett.
Just heard Rick Santorum on the Laura Ingraham show. He said his advice was for Fred to stay in it. He could have won some states on Super Tuesday.
Its a shame. Maybe Fred just didn’t want it bad enough, or had other issues we do not know about.
That is my thought as well. Maybe Guiliani could give her a run, simply because of his 911 mantle. The remaining field offers much fuel for her machine, IMHO.
None of them are close? None of them are conservative, but some of them have many conservative values. So none of them agree with you 50%, 60%? If they say they will appoint originalist judges, you dont agree with that? Pro life, you disagree? You disagree with the ones that promote a strong defense? They are all weak on Immigration and Taxes, but they are all better than Hillary.
"If you are willing to hold your nose and vote for Romney/Giuliani/McCain/Huckabee then you will be holding your nose year after year...oh, wait. that is what you have been doing."
And what your doing is saying that you are going to vote for someone not even running for President. You think people voting for actual candidates are wasting a vote, and you advocate voting for someone that isn't running for President? Wow.
"How many of you told me in 2000 that I had to hold my nose and vote for Bush?"
So you would have preferred Al Gore? You think the Country would be in better shape with Al Gore than G W Bush? Those were the choices, Bush and Gore. 2000 was a Presidential election, not a Primary, but those were your choices, Bush and Gore. Bush gave us a good Supreme Court, moderate Tax cuts, and a good response to 911. Can you imagine the Supreme Court and Taxes under that idiot Gore??? YES YOU DID THE RIGHT THING IN 2000! Stop regretting it.
"You told me to do that in 2004, and I did. You told me that in 2000, and I did. You told me that in 1996. snd I did. Do you see a pattern here?"
In 2004 the choice was Bush and Kerry, who is better for the Country? In 2000 the choice was Bush and Gore, thats a no brainer choice there. In 1996 we got Clinton over Dole, and we are STILL dealing with those Marxists as a result. So yes I see a pattern, you are trying to keep the Socialist Democrats out, and I'm glad. Again, those are Presidentail elections, not the Primaries.
"Fred Thompson wouldnt raise his hand, and I wont hold my nose anymore. Maybe you dont, but I need to breathe to live. If I keep holding my nose, I wont be able to breathe."
"Vote for Fred Thompson in the primary in the hope of getting an open convention where we certainly cant get anything worse than we are being offered now."
So your going to vote for someone not running? No one can stop you from trashing your Primary vote, I just hope the Democrats and the Republicans that think they have to agree 100% with a candidate don't give my Country and my family Hillary for President.
Great post!
