Thats the sum of it. If you cant bring yourself to vote for the offerings in your primary, or if the eventual nominee is somebody you cant stomach, dont sit out, and dont vote for the Democrat. Write in Fred Thompsons name.
Why?
By doing so, you send a message that cant be mistaken or spun. It is a message that says:
I am a Republican who wanted to vote for a conservative GOP candidate, but wasnt able to do so. I cant vote for a Democrat, but I cant vote for any of the Republicans, either. So Im writing in the name of the candidate I wish I could have voted for, because he is the kind of candidate I could support.
They have to learn that if they want conservative votes, they have to nominate candidates conservatives would want to vote for.
This strategy is the only one that offers any hope of changing the leftward move of the GOP in the future. Sitting out wont do it - they can spin the reasons why you sat out. Voting Democrat wont do it, they can spin it that the GOP candidates werent liberal enough. Even voting None of the Above wont do it, because that doesnt specify what you want instead of none of the above.
Im pretty sure that if this notion starts to get traction, Fred Thompson will publicly oppose it. Dont worry, and dont listen to him. This isnt really about Fred Thompson. Its about the future of the Republican party. Fred ran because he hoped to influence that, but he failed. Now its time for the rest of us to take a crack at it.
So remember: Just write in Fred Thompsons name when it comes time to cast your vote. (Theres nothing stopping you from writing it in for other offices, either).
And ignore all the squalling that you have to vote GOP because it is marginally less evil than the Democrats. Given the rate of decay were seeing now, even that wont be true (if it really is even now) in a couple more election cycles.
I agree we can't depend on that -- but I believe we can depend on a bad outcome if we keep giving the GOP a blank check. :(
I will be participating -- I will write in a candidate for president and fight like heck for conservative congressional candidates. We're going to need them.
Yeah, that will kick Clinton x2’s Ass.
Romney is the only candidate left who even panders to the right.
I’m sorry, but I can’t agree. I love Fred, but I feel it would be a waste of my vote to vote for him when he has withdrawn. And I don’t think he’d want us to waste our votes.
But what if 200 million folks wrote in FRED ???????
The exchange was about Arnold supporters.
Huckabee basically says he’s a liberal at every debate. The way I see it, it always takes guts to say you are pro-capitalism.
But what if there were 200 million pink unicorns with purple polka dots and funny hats that voted for Fred?????
If you are going to vote for people not even running for office, then you dont you dare come on here and complain about whatever President is in office nest year. I supported Fred, I even sent money, I wanted him as President. He is no longer a Candidate, he withdrew. Fred is not a candidate. FRED IS NOT A CANDIDATE.
Three things you need to learn:
1. Hillary/Obama are FAR FAR FAR worse than any Republican running.
2. Fred is not running.
3. Your vote affects the entire country, not just your own personal pride.
And the Republicans have no conservatives running. Whats your point?
Maybe they sent a message that the GOP needed to change. Which it did enough to win in 1994. (Do you keep going to a restaurant that serves terrible food, because they’ll get the message and improve?)
As I said, Huckabee is the least of the evils that I can see. To me, he is preferable to Romney, McCain, and Giuliani. Next after him is Paul, though I doubt I could vote for him or anyone below him on my list.
depends if the democrats have control or not...
I have conservative congress critters, done all I can there.
The Huckster is weak on immigration and he is a notorious TAX AND SPEND man who think gov’t is the answer to everything. He is in the wrong party, actually.
He is a snake oil salesman who uses his folksy southern expressions ...a little too much. He knows nothing about foreign policy and he seems to pimp McCrazy. That alone tells me alot.
No thanks on the Huckster.
I’m moving on, enjoyed the thread. I can’t vote for Romney, McCain, and Giuliani. End of story.
I made my point over and over, here it is again since you asked.
Make your vote count. Write in votes do not send a message. Protest votes do not send a message. They are a shallow emotional response that put the Democrats into office. My point is to find a candidate that is actually running for office and vote for the one that closest matches your values.
Do not play a part in putting my family under a Hillary Clinton rule because of an emotional vote rather than a strategic one.
If it were Paul vs. Clinton, whom would you vote for?
