DALLAS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A Dallas minister who marched with civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., said Monday's birthday observance holiday is an insult to his legacy.
The Rev. Peter Johnson, 62, director of the Texas operations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told The Dallas Morning News the holiday should be on April 4, the anniversary of the date King was assassinated.
"We have ignored the essence of his life and the horror of his death," said Johnson. "We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination and we've allowed black America to drift back into a coma."
Johnson said King is considered a martyr by many but said, if he were alive, he would be considered an agitator by many people, the newspaper said.
"We remember him with parades and galas and banquets, things that are really irrelevant and silly regarding Dr. King's legacy," he said. "If we really want to honor Dr. King, we should do something about people who live under bridges. That would be a great tribute."
No guilt here, didn't do it.
There is a bitch roaming the earth that I wouldn't mind feeling ...... about.
"Black America"?????
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
One day...but certainly not today for Peter Johnson.
Dr. King was not a saint, but he had the right idea.....too bad today’s race hustlers (evidently including Rev. Peter Johnson) have consciously and with malice aforethought prostituted Dr. King’s dream of racial equality for their own benefit.

People like this including al and jesse make it difficult to move forward.
I still prefer John Moses Browning Day.
Like a couple of FReepers suggest.
“Black America” is not in a coma.
Some of it is consciously self-destructing.
And its not “Dr. King”, its Reverend King.
That would be nice.
I don't believe that the likes of Mr. Johnson share that dream ... quite the contrary, in fact.
I agree. Someone should tell them to get a damned job.
I didn’t even know I was in on the assassination. Have to check the phone logs from my teenage years to see when James Earl Ray called me up to relay my role. Couldn’t have been the trigger man, because I’ve only shot a gun once in my life — at a boar hog in Spain. And I definitely wasn’t the getaway driver, because i didn’t even have my license yet. In fact, I didn’t even know I was in Memphis that day! Screw him.
LOL
Then change it to Frederick Douglass Day!
MLK Day (or “Black Day”, as a well-meaning Japanese friend once accurately called it), is indeed an insult to all Americans. It revolts me that this man is given a national holiday, and yet neither George Washington nor Abraham Lincoln have their own days.
So all of “White America” was to blame for the minority of states where blacks were harrassed and attacked? I don’t recall any “White Only” signs in Connecticut.
When’s this asshat’s birthday?
"We've allowed white America to escape the guilt of his assassination"
I agree. Hey, Bro’ STFU.
None in California either.
