I’ve seen an album cover with Bob Newhart smoking a cigarette, he was part of the comedy wave, I would think, that brought out Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, a more so-called sophisticated comedy.

He had a release, “Introducing tobacco to civilization” /incorrect title, Sir Walter Raleigh.

Recorded first in ? Colorado Springs. How about that in 1962.

Zero children
And the death of The West marches on.

Scary isn’t it... I often wonder to what extent the social upheavals of the last 30+ years were planned...

Wasn't it Cloris Leachman who played a newage minister (ministrix?) who presided at a wedding ceremony with the lines

"I-ness
Me-ness
You-ness
We-ness"

?

Duzzenat sound vaguely dirty to you?

I don't know about "planned" in the sense that there was a "star chamber" somewhere which sent out faxes and phone calls and emails and marching orders.

You get a little of that in Margaret Sanger and Harry Blackmun and Warren Buffett and their ilk, but I don't know that there is secret society somewhere, behind the secnes, which is calling all the shots.

Nevertheless, whether or not "it" was intentionally "planned" by human beings - or whether we, as a species, somehow unknowingly acquiesced to "it" - "it" definitely has a purpose.

Namely, our annihilation.

I still marvel at how she was able to not only hold the same stage with Bob Newhart, but to become just as important to the show as him.

That show was fabulous. Can you imagine a show today having to conform to the decency standards of that day and still be funny?

My local paper has a daily column called "Today's Birthdays" and I had just read it a few hours before reading the thread.

So, there you have it.

By the way, did you know that the actress Luise Rainer turned 98 just a week ago, and she is the oldest living Oscar winner.

I saw Mr. Buddwig....She was an incredible talent...Unfortunate that Leading ladies had to be blond and brunettes were relegated to supporting roles.

Of course it is only based on PR..but I always read her as a class act.

No, she wasn't in that one. It was Tom Smothers, "Reverend Spike."

After Sally Kellerman recited her vow, "I-ness," "Me-ness," "You-ness," "We-ness," Martin Mull said "Sick-ness."

Another great line:

Sally Kellerman pulls her Volvo over to pick up her new black maid who is wearing a white maid's uniform. After a little chit-chat, she pulls the car over and said, "I'm just going to be up front with you. It's the uniform."

The maid says, "Oh? What's wrong with it?"

Kellerman says, "It's not the uniform, it's the IDEA of a uniform."

The maid says, "Oh, I get it. You want me to wear regular clothes so that people will think I'm your black friend who just stopped by to clean your house?"

Kellerman: "Would you?" and drives off.

Serial! OMG, hadn’t thought of that in a million years. Sooo funny! I had the book first, before there was a movie - it was a spiral bound “notebook”, written in “serial” installments.

Couldn’t wait to visit Marin County (and soon did!). Mull was already one of my favorite comedians. Ha, I remember a weekend biker scene. The “Hell’s Angels” riders were descending on a small CA town and the residents were cowering in fear.

They were talking about one of their “tough” members missing the ride because he was in the hospital. They made it sound like he’d been shot in a gunfight with “the law” - then they all stopped at the drug store in the small town, parking their bikes and striking fear in the heart of the pharmacist within.

They roared into the store, lol, and all went to the Hallmark card aisle to get the guy a get-well card - they were reading them out loud to each other and laughing. I cracked up. The missing member was having something like gall bladder surgery.

Hadn’t he been an accountant before doing stand-up? He was the “button-down mind.” He did one end of hilarious imaginary phone calls when I first saw him.

She and Newhart were partners, like Lucy and Desi and Dick van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore. Many actresses on these husband-wife shows play their parts as though they were just reciting lines to a stand-in.

She was on a panel celebrating the Bow Newhart Show last fall. She looked awful, but her mind was sharp and her spirit was strong. Got to love someone like that. She virtually walked out of an ICU do do the bit. What a trooper!

Rest in peace . You were a class act.

Do you all think 50 years from know people will be saying the same thing about Spears and Hilton?

That was a wonderfully funny sitcom. That and WKRP in Cinncinatti.

But is it precisely because they had to conform to standards of decency that they were funny. Sitcoms stopped being funny because rather than writing something actually funny, the writers merely write lines for shock value. There's no attempt at actual humor anymore.

"Comedy" stopped being funny a long time ago. :-(
