IMO, Fred's "need to attack" reflects poorly on our election process, rather than on Fred. Sure, he would prefer to only be presidential and statesman-like. However, in our appearance-obsessed culture (even the Republican voting segment), that just doesn't get all the votes necessary to be elected President (even with some of the lightweights (IMO) in the field).

I've suggested on other threads that if Fred looked like Mitt, he'd have run away with this nomination a long time ago. I regret that fact in the greater electorate, but it is a real shame that it is strongly here at FR too. You would think the posters to the world's best conservative online site wouldn't be so impressed by bright shiny things.

...but to be honest I was disappointed in him. Fred Thompson always projected the aura of “Elder-Statesman” to me ...Last night, he came across as weak to me...Not that his attack was weak, but because he felt the need to attack...

I'm going to agree with you here in that I also think Fred does just fine without the aggressiveness. But I blame the "he has no fire in the belly" crowd for forcing Fred to being more of attack dog than he has been.

Note to everyone who thinks I'm disparaging Fred here. He's been my guy since day 1. I can't understand how any conseravive could think otherwise. I also think Duncan Hunter is a great man but he's just not presidential material. Fred Thompson is a natural.

Good republicans of South Carolina, do the right thing. Shock the political world. I'm begging you.

IMO, this is one example (there have been many during this process) that exposes Mike’s propensity to exploit his Christianity, rather than model it. He’s too slick; just like that other guy from Hope.

Romney has not announced a retreat from South Carolina, he simply has pulled his ads for a while.

Pulling ads that were scheduled and changing the schedule and going into Michigan can only objectively be called a retreat. The Romney campaign (according to NPR, which dislikes all the Republicans except McCain and maybe Paul) has called Michigan its firewall.

BTW, I support Thompson, I don't trust Romney, but I have never said that he would be dropping out. If he can finish 2nd in a bunch of places, first in a few, and just stick around, he will be a player in the likely event that we have a brokered convention.

Anyway, I personally consider dropping ads AND CHANGING HIS SCHEDULE to be effectively pulling out. If he comes roaring back into SC with a retooled ad campaign and serious time in SC after Michigan, I will gladly consume my verbiage, provided I am provided with some Crystal hot sauce, Luzianne Creole Mustard and a can of Canada Dry Jamaica Cola to have with them.

MSNBC! Of course they would. Fred’s performance last night has them shaking in their boots. They can envision Fred doing the same to Hillary or Barack in a future debate and that’s a scary thing to them.

Fred was polling neck and neck with frontrunner Rudy when Huck challenged him to that debate, and Huck was at the bottom, there was no reason for Fred to take that debate, he would have looked manipulated.

I knew it would happen, as soon as Fred shows what most people believe is "fire in the belly" they would immediately jump on him for being too harsh, and recommend he not have so much fire-in-the-belly. LOL, the nonsense goes on and on.

Give em hell Fred, however way you choose it, you have my support, firebelly, or nofirebelly.

Any party that has either McCain or Huckabee as its front runners isn’t necessarily one that can be appealed to rationally.

Fred feels the need to do what he did last night because they are picking candidates with their hearts and not their heads.

Yes some are being a bit disingenuous when they compliment Fred for his tactics last night but have criticized other Republicans for using exactly the same rule book.

Politics can be tough, dirty and unfair and those participating in it have to take the rough with smooth. Therefore part of me say good luck Fred but part of me still thinks of the Reagan 11th commandment never attack a fellow Republican though of course to get the nomination I am sure even he forgot it and if he did not his supporters definitely did.
