IMO, Fred's "need to attack" reflects poorly on our election process, rather than on Fred. Sure, he would prefer to only be presidential and statesman-like. However, in our appearance-obsessed culture (even the Republican voting segment), that just doesn't get all the votes necessary to be elected President (even with some of the lightweights (IMO) in the field).

I've suggested on other threads that if Fred looked like Mitt, he'd have run away with this nomination a long time ago. I regret that fact in the greater electorate, but it is a real shame that it is strongly here at FR too. You would think the posters to the world's best conservative online site wouldn't be so impressed by bright shiny things.

Maybe these debates should be only on the radio, that way we can focus on the message, not the image.
