Evangelicals Against Mitt
The American Spectator ^ | 1/3/2008 | Carrie Sheffield

Posted on 01/08/2008 4:09:13 PM PST by tantiboh

Mitt Romney is facing an unexpected challenge in Iowa from rival Mike Huckabee, who has enjoyed a groundswell of support from religious voters, particularly evangelical Christians wary of the clean-cut former Massachusetts governor because of his Mormon religion.

The common worry among evangelicals is that if Romney were to capture the White House, his presidency would give legitimacy to a religion they believe is a cult. Since the LDS church places heavy emphasis on proselytizing -- there are 53,000 LDS missionaries worldwide -- many mainstream Christians are afraid that Mormon recruiting efforts would increase and that LDS membership rolls would swell.

...

THE ONLY PROBLEM with those fears is that they don't add up. Evangelicals may be surprised to learn that the growth of church membership in Massachusetts slowed substantially during Romney's tenure as governor. In fact, one could make the absurdly simplistic argument that Romney was bad for Mormonism.

...

ONE WAY TO GAUGE what might happen under a President Romney would be to look at what happened during the period of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Held in Salt Lake City, they were dubbed the "Mormon Olympics."

...

Despite all the increased attention, worldwide the Church grew only slightly, and in fact in the year leading up to the games the total number of congregations fell. Overall, from 2000 to 2004, there was a 10.9 percent increase in memberships and a 3.6 percent increase in congregations.

...

The LDS church is likely to continue its current modest-but-impressive growth whether or not Romney wins the White House. Perhaps the only real worry for evangelicals is that, if elected, the former Massachusetts governor will demonstrate to Americans that Mormons don't have horns.

Carrie Sheffield, a member of the LDS Church, is a writer living in Washington, D.C.

“There are members of every religion that quit, no doubt, even yours, whatever it is. After all, you quit too.”

“You can’t “sorta quit.” It has to be a full quit or not.”
________________________________________________________

Every unbeliever who gets saved and becomes a Christian has quit being an pagan and began to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and that God gave His only begotten Son to die on the cross and save them, just for them..And it was a “full quit” John 3:16, 17

I quit...and I believe a lot of other FReepers did to..

We confessed with our mouth about the Lord Jesus and believed in our hearts that God the Father raised Him from the dead, and were saved, “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is madeunto salvation, for the scripture saith whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek for the same Lord over all is richunto all that call upon Him. For whosoever shall call upon the Lord shall be saved” Romans 10:9-13

Wanna quit a “full quit” what you’re doing and join us???????

Sorry, but when you denigrate my love for and faith in Christ, I cannot consider that a loving comment.

I am a Christian. I base my life around Him. I do so because of my Mormon faith. Whether you like it or not, that is the truth.

“Because of (your) MORMON faith”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

That does not make you a Christian...

The Bible does not say have MORMON faith and you will be a Christian

The word “Mormon” is not in the Bible

The type of faith we must have is the kind God tells us to have, not some pie-in-the-sky man-made idea of “faith”

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things unseen Hebrews 11:1

But without faith it is impossible to please Him (God), for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him...Hebrews 11:6

You’re nitpicking. Remove the word “Mormon” and the statement remains just as true.

I am, however, most grateful to be a Mormon. It is the means through which I have come to know, love, and follow Christ. I would venture to say that I can come to know Christ far more closely through my beliefs than you can through yours. I count that as a great blessing, and invite others to embrace it with me.

Sorry, Nana, your close-mindedness and ecclesiastical parochialism does nothing to diminish my relationship with Christ or my Christianity.

No but pretty sure Jesus Christ is and the church's name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. "Mormon" is just the nickname.

Course you already knew that.

You didn’t post one item that isn’t a lie or a distortion of Romney. Is this from the DNC?

Yes I already knew that the words “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” was not in the Bible...and now you know so to...I just told you...

Howe many times much I tell you guys...

(((READ THE BIBLE FOR YOURSELF)))

Now consider...God so loved the world..meaning everyone...that He gave His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON (JESUS) to die on the cross for us...all we have to do is believe..John 3:16, 17

Now, God never gave Jesus to die for just anyone living in these “latter” times but also the people living in the time Jesus walked on the Earth and also those already in the “Bosom of Abraham”

Its not about being a member of a particular church...its about repenting of your sin and asking Jesus to save you...

I got news for your dumb heads... WE are the church...the “church” is not a building...

WE, the believers, are the church, the BODY OF CHRIST, and JESUS, and ONLY JESUS,is the head of the church...

A group of believers can call themselves whatever they like...people in St Paul’s Cathedral can be just as saved as the 1st Baptist Church or the Smith Street Methodist...

WE are ALL part of the body of believers, the CHURCH...

And now you know because I just told you...

(((READ THE BIBLE FOR YOURSELF)))

"The word “Mormon” is not in the Bible"

Careful.......

There are a lot of notions/ideas/words that are expressly not found in the Bible that are used quite often out here on FR.com

Among them..."Trinity" "God the Son" "Mother of God", and more

Though you might not hear such things acknowledged on the regular Sunday service of many Denominations.

TO ALL WHO WANT TO HELP US TO BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT CHRIST AND HOW HE GUIDES HIS PEOPLE ON EARTH.

If this thread is like most others that have anything to do with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or as we are more often called, the Mormons, it will soon be taken over by those who, for reasons of their own, choose to put down my Church, and those of us who worship with it.

We find no problem with people who really want to talk to us about converting to their religion, we spend a lot of time doing it ourselves.

What we find offensive is when people leave out part of the truth to make a half-true lie , or when some one renames something, that we find important or sacred, so it sounds like gutter talk.

I do not know how to tell the difference all the time. There are some Handles that keep showing up, and they are easy to spot. Sometimes, though, I have given a hard and not so kind response to some who honestly care for us and our salvation.

Please forgive us if we get you mixed up.

Thanks for your time,
fred

While the words “God, the Son” are not arranged in that order, as Christians, we know know that Jesus is God...

Jesus is the Word of God and is mentioned in the Bible as part of the “three that bear record in Heavan, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost and these three are one.. 1 John 5:7

In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD WAS GOD The same was in the beginning with God All things were made by Him and without was not anything made that was made. In Him was life and the life was the light of men, and the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not John 1:1-5

And the WORD becasme flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory as of the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and Truth. John 1:14

No MAN hath seen GOD at any time, only the only bergotten SON, which is in the bosom of the ather, He hath declared Him. John 1:18

The words, “mormon” and “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” are not in the Bible...

mormonism has nothing to do with the Jesus of the Bible, or Christianity...

Certainly not “liberal” by today’s standards -— but Nixon did all sorts of big government things -— the EPA being the worst mistake.
