'Green fatigue' leads to fear of backlash over climate change

British people are now convinced about the dangers of global warming but are either baffled about how to stop it or are ignoring the issue.

Analysts say few people are taking action to deal with the threat of climate change, although over the past 12 months the vast majority have come to accept that it poses a real threat to the world. Opinion polls reveal much confusion among the public about what Britain should do to combat the problem.

A backlash is now a real threat, said Phil Downing, head of environmental research for Ipsos Mori. 'There's cynicism because on the one hand we're being told [the problem] is very serious and on the other hand we're building runways, mining Alaskan oil; there's a lot going on that appears to be heading in the opposite direction.'

This is particularly evident in the huge public resistance to green taxes. 'There's a cynicism the government is using the green agenda as an excuse for hitting motorists and people who want to fly,' added Downing.

A key factor will be the weather, said West. 'If we have a nice average year, whatever that means, people will say: "Climate change: what of it?" But if we have either an extreme heatwave or more flooding, I think there's going to be a cumulative effect. The next time we have a national-scale weather-related emergency, people will say: "Enough ... we can't allow this to be normal". In a way, if that happens, it makes our job easier, but clearly I don't want to wish a disaster on anyone.'

We're not that gullible...

Don't piss in my Lemonade and tell me it's Global Warming!

Global warming is getting blamed for every tiny affliction that crosses a human synapse. Small wonder there's a backlash building!

LOL!

Want to save billions of tons of CO2 from entering the air?

Remove your catalytic converters.
They convert exhaust to CO2 and H2O.

I’m waiting for the drumbeat to start about H2O being a pollutant.

I think the Greens are overplaying their hand. Every day brings some new prediction of disaster. Sometime in the next ten years, people will look around and realize the Emperor is FOS. Their only hope is to convince people that normal weather is somehow not normal. You see them trying to do that already.

I doubt they will be successful at that, however, I could be wrong here. They are masters of propaganda and have the whole MSM & public education & (seemingly) scientific establishment on their side. Still, truth is a hard thing to hide. It will eventually become apparent that Global Warming is just a big scam to accomplish wealth transfer.

No! Say it ain't so! An agenda for taxing and controlling the population?!?!? It can't be! Anyone who thinks that MUST be a cynic! [sarcasm - if you really needed to be told]

OMG--the absolute idiocy of huge numbers of people! Pre-Columbus, all the "intelligent" teachers, scientists, philosophers, declared that the earth was square. Global warming is another such boondoggle.

Climate HAS always changed!

Climate IS changing!

Climate WILLl always change!

I believe in keeping down pollution, conserving our earth, without the arrogance of pervasive guilt and thinking we are ruining the universe.

Pre-Columbus, all the "intelligent" teachers, scientists, philosophers, declared that the earth was square.

No they didn't. The intelligent people told Columbus that the (spherical) earth had a diameter of 8000 miles, and that he would therefore starve before he got to China.

It's only our generation that don't 'get' science.

We have a running joke at our house with my ten and seven year olds. If something happens, they don’t get their rooms cleaned up on time, someone forgot to make the bed, mommy loses her coffee cup or the dryer eats the socks, they yell, “It’s Global Warming! We’re all gonna die.”

They keep me laughing.

Dennis, I will never use one either. They are ugly, they are filled with mercury, and the light is ugly too. Looks like we’ll have to be importing them from somewhere, tho, as of 2014.

Maybe you and I should grab all we can, warehouse them for 2014, and then sell them at 200%. Say, wait, I bet someone is doing just that. AlG??

I don’t think the enviromentalists understand psychology. People can only be hysterically frightened for so long before they have to let the fear go. Global warming, nuclear threat, whatever, life goes on. You still have to eat, sleep and go to the bathroom and most of all pay taxes.

So if you are not yet starving or blown up it remains life as usual.

Good idea. I think I’m in business!

I hate the nasty light off the twisty bulbs. I also think the mercury poisoning aspect is criminal.
