Pascagoula, MS It was unseasonably warm on the river when Moses Henry felt the first nibble on his fishing line, waiting a second before setting the hook. His fishing pole bent in half and sent the reel drag screaming as the big catfish began the fight. This ones decent, he said as he reeled a 40 pound Flathead towards the boat. This is what life is all about he added.
Henry, a 75 year-old retired African-American, has been fishing his entire life. My first memories are of fishing with my grandpappy. I was scared of the worms and hed bait the hook. He taught me everything I know about it, from tying knots to which bait to use and how weather affects how the fish bite.
The recent rash of noose hanging incidents across the country has Henry, a lawyer and NAACP consultant, rethinking one aspect of his favorite past time, the fishing knot. I use a noose, the same knot my grandpappy used and taught me and Ive passed it on to my grandsons. I should have never done that
Ive never thought a black man could promote racism but thats just what using that knot does. Its a sign that something isnt right when I could teach my grandsons to tie it without a second thought as to its history, he added.
There are many fishing knots that can be used as an alternative to the noose to tie a hook onto a line and Henry has created a program to teach those knots to children at community and recreation centers throughout Mississippi.
The program called Not a Noose gets some funding from community civic organizations and donations of line and hooks from local tackle shops, but for the most part is paid for out of Henrys own pocket.
I travel the state quite a bit teaching these classes, and Im not as young as I used to be. Hopefully we can get some public support for this through community development grants or State money and Ill be able to transfer the reigns to someone with younger legs, he said.
The NAACP has contacted the Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to see if there is any room in the budget for such a program.
Until then, Henry says hell continue with the classes in between fishing trips. We have to nip this in the bud now and our only hope is to end it through educating the younger generation, he said.
I think this is satire — it must be.

Oc course it’s satire...unless this guy only uses his knot on white fish. Then they ought to toss the bum in jail and throw away the key.
I use a noose knot for the fish on the stringer. Just as a warning to the others to watch their step.
Yep get charged with a hate crime for fishing now
un be freaking lievable
We breathe the same air today that KKK members used to. I suggest we put and end to that this very moment...
Im going blackfishing with a cinch knot - call the police.
Okay, it was satire...
I call off my huntin dogs...

Sounds to me like so much liberal self loathing that seems to be the current fad. You know what they say about fads; any fad will do.
Why don't you, if you feel so self-loathing, pay reparations to your slave decendents? That is, from one rich black-man to his poor black-slave-decendent bretheren.
Digging into this story will most likely net which candidates that he's supported all his life, and buttress the unassailable position that liberalism is nothing more than mental illness.
Bout the only way to tie mono-filiment This must be a joke otherwise time to put lawyers in their place.
The list of grievances our many 'victims' in this counry has is truly nauseating.
I guess it wasn't a racist symbol all those years ago. Then, it was just a good not to keep your hook on the line.
What has a noose got to do with blacks.
It’s been used for hangings without thought of race forever.
Even the 7 chinese that were hung from lamp posts in Los Angeles were hung with the noose.
How about the numerous cattle thieves or the many states that used it for execution for years.
Thank God I looked for the sarcasm tag - I damned near thought this was real.
