WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Monday said he didn't need to apologize for his faith, despite concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail.
"As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian," Thompson said, noting that, while he does not attend church while at home in McLean, Virginia, he does attend church with his mother when he visits in Tennessee. "I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or God."
In a column in USA Today Monday, David Domke, a University of Washington journalism professor, said Thompson has not done better in the polls because "he lacks a religious niche" and "Christian conservatives have not been amused or enthused" by his lack of church attendance and the few times he has talked of his faith on the campaign trail.
Thompson dismissed those comments, saying "I'm OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell."

Fred doesn’t even attend church, yet his minnions attack Romney ad infinidum about his religion. How insane is that!
Agree a hundred percent. My biggest beef is they are separating the family, which is one of the biggest problems in this country now. In our bigger church, the kids have their own classes, kids church and they go their way, you go yours. Meet afterward to go home. Kids 10 and up can and should go with us to church.
“Jesus said, Wherever two or more meet in My name, there shall I be also.”
If your with your family, wouldn’t that be two or more?
The MSM is okay with Satan and Satan is ok with them.
I think that depends on which Church of Christ you are dealing with. I’ve dealt with both. Mr. Thompson was invited to speak at an annual fundraising event at the (Church of Christ) private school that my daughter once attended a few years ago. If you know anything else about the Church of Christ, then you’ll understand that he’s most likely a member of the institutional church rather than the ultra-conservative side.

Isn’t missing mass a sin. Maybe that is only for Catholics. I don’t think I have missed a mass in my life.
Amen. I don't care what a politician's faith is, or isn't. I want an honest person who is up front with what they will do in office.
Amen! It's gotten so bad for me that I don't attend church either. My wife and I like to refer to ourselves as "believers" in The Lord Jesus Christ, as opposed to "Christians." I've had more rotten experiences with people calling themselves Christians than anything else I've ever encountered. I call it the "Frank Burns syndrome." It's either "God's will or somebody else's fault."
I'm beginning to like Thompson a great deal. He talks clearly, plainly and, I believe, acts more "Christian" than any of these other wouldbes.
If that's the case you might enjoy listening to this. Horton and crew provide lots of thoughts on how a Christian should act in public, and why you are right in saying the above.
As a Catholic, I attend Mass every week. It’s very personal to me and not like some other denominations where I have attended. My parish priest doesn’t get out there preaching beyond what was in the Bible readings for that day. And never talks about fund-raising. I’m very fortunate.
I wouldn’t attack his sincerity, by I would attack his lazy attitute toward knowledge of Mormon Doctrine (because I was one, and I know what they teach), or I would attack him for not telling the truth.
Either way, I don’t believe a word the flipper says, he’s a known panderer.
Wow. A poll gets to determine whether I am Christian or not? I thought the Lord got to determine that.
How would you know you were uncomfortable in a particular church if you didn't go to church?
There are an increasing number of pastors out there who have the position simply because it’s a job. And often a very lucrative one. Then they come into the church & push their own personal agenda.
Fred has lived in Virginia while working in NY and California, not lived in California.
So who is more consistent and trustworthy across his or her entire career? And who is a pander-bear?
So here we have more evidence that Mormons do not think Christians are Christian at all. In my eight years of seeing the Mormon church close up, this doctrine was stated many times to me.
This is The Church of Jesus Christ he had counsel Joseph Smith and his other servants to restore His Church once again on Earth
