WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Monday said he didn't need to apologize for his faith, despite concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail.
"As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian," Thompson said, noting that, while he does not attend church while at home in McLean, Virginia, he does attend church with his mother when he visits in Tennessee. "I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or God."
In a column in USA Today Monday, David Domke, a University of Washington journalism professor, said Thompson has not done better in the polls because "he lacks a religious niche" and "Christian conservatives have not been amused or enthused" by his lack of church attendance and the few times he has talked of his faith on the campaign trail.
Thompson dismissed those comments, saying "I'm OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell."

As always, his comments seem genuine. You can tell when someone is trying to trick you or play politics when they have a long speech with 'buts' and 'ifs' etc.. Thompson's answer is simple and to the point.
Yes, how UNCLINTONIAN of Fred.
LOL.
Sounds Fred is a little more honest w his faith, than, say, Hucksterbee.
Funny we raise this issue w Fred and Romney, but not Hucksterbee...who cant tell the diff between God and Caesar
Huckster now pimping for Islamic Terrorists at Gitmo. Huckster doesnt realize that those Islamics will kill him first for being an “infidel”
I’d much rather deal with a man who lives out his faith in day-to-day life than with someone who uses his faith as a “calling card”. I’ve been hoodwinked by “Christian” crooks enough.
Exactly. The US is full of ‘the un-churched’ who are still Christians. Whether someone does or doesn’t attend services on a regular basis should never be a measurement for how ‘Christian’ they are.
The MSM doesn’t like Fred and there are many Christian conservatives who think he’s insufficiently conservative or Christian, or both. Which is why they’re being tricked by the MSM into liking the LaRaza Socialist Huckabee.
I’m not electing a theologian. It is more important to me that the person is wise and has a good understanding of right and wrong than that he has right theology, even if I think his wrong theology is a danger to his own soul. I might pray for him and hope that he truly understands the gospel someday, but I can still vote for him so long as he has a traditional, Judeo-Christian understanding of right and wrong.

Agreed. He doesn’t make his religion (or lack thereof) an issue, nor should it be. Appointing strict constructionist judges and pushing for federalism, aka smaller government, will do more for religious freedom and respect for life than pushing hot button issues that have no real chance of ever passing. We aren’t electing a chief priest.
The Bible doesn’t say that we must attend church services to be right with the Lord.

I’m sorry to say, but I distrust businesses that use Christian symbols, bible versus, ect. in their advertisements for much the same reason, and I’m a believer. If you run a Christian business, act as a Christian and you’ll have no shortage of satisfied customers. You shouldn’t need to use your faith (unless you’re a church) to sell anything, including political policy.
I bet Jimmy Carter and the ‘Toon go to church every Sunday. It hasn’t done much for them. Carter is one of the most morally confused men on earth, and the ‘Toon doesn’t really seem to have any morals to be confused about.
I could care less either way. At least Fred isn’t pandering about it. He could have started going to church earlier this year when he was first thinking about running, but he didn’t. I admire that.
“I sent $25 to http://fred08.com/ on Friday, just like I do every pay day.”
Good for you! I have been making donations also. I donated to Duncan Hunter in the beginning, but moved to Fred after he entered the race. I do like Duncan Hunter very much, and hope he will be chosen as Fred’s VP. I hope all other Fred supporters will do the same and give what they can to help Fred win the nomination, as he really can do it! GO FRED!
Especially considering the social direction of some “Christian” churches today. I wouldn’t attend church to be lectured on global warming, Darfur, species extinction, AIDS in Africa, or other topics offered much more comprehensively (and with many of the same biases) at the local social sciences department seminars. Genuine reflection on matters of faith, combined with good works, are worth far more than merely having your attendance taken at weekly services at Church of the Hippy Jesus. But some people just want to see that bright neon $12 sign.
