WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Monday said he didn't need to apologize for his faith, despite concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail.
"As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian," Thompson said, noting that, while he does not attend church while at home in McLean, Virginia, he does attend church with his mother when he visits in Tennessee. "I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or God."
In a column in USA Today Monday, David Domke, a University of Washington journalism professor, said Thompson has not done better in the polls because "he lacks a religious niche" and "Christian conservatives have not been amused or enthused" by his lack of church attendance and the few times he has talked of his faith on the campaign trail.
Thompson dismissed those comments, saying "I'm OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell."

Church of Christ demands that their members attend regularly, unless ill or providently hindered.
Most Christian Conservatives think for themselves. They don’t pay any attention to the MSM or Pat Robertson.
Actually the Bible does talk about meeting with other Christians.
I am greatly troubled at how political churches are becoming- whether conservative or liberal. I’m all for being environmentally conscious, but it scares the hell outta me when I hear a pastor preaching global warming crap.

Many posters seem to think the MSM is intentionally trying to “trick” people into supporting Huckabee. Sorry, but I don’t buy into those conspiracy theories. More likely, the MSM loves an exciting, close race. They also unconsciously give better coverage to people who are more liberal for the simple reason people generally like people who think like themselves.
I believe the MSM is unintentionally responsible for Huckabee’s rise. Otherwise, what specific things has he done to stand out? Nothing! But the MSM focuses on changes in the polls. If those changes show something is breaking up the existing running order, even more interesting to discuss. But, by discussing and focusing on these changes, like Huckabee’s rise in Iowa, the MSM in fact reinforces the changes.
At least, that’s my opinion.
As far as faith goes, the MSM doesn’t have enough time (in a TV segment) to dig beneath the surface. Shoot, many people would probably tune out if the MSM tried to get too far into the details. So, all they hear is Huckabee is a Christian while Thompson isn’t forthcoming about his faith. Given the lack of information, people might be led to think Huckabee is a man of faith while Fred isn’t.
Amen to what Fred said. I’d rather have Fred with his quiet faith than the Huckster who is attempting to use his religion as a weapon against Mitt Romney in Iowa.
Well, since attending a Church of Christ, or any other church is optional, I guess they really can’t “demand” anything.
A man who feels comfortable enough in his personal faith to not use it for political points or leverage. What a nice change of pace.
I’ve been on the edge for a while, but I’m almost positive I’m voting for Thompson now.

The MSM is open borders, so Thompson and Hunter are personna non grata.

Okay, given that’s all you know, where’s your vote going?”
Oh and one more thing - it’s 1980.
And I too donate whenever I get the chance. Get thee (in general, not specific to you, rightin) to http://www.fred08.com/ and donate a chunk or even sign up and then you can call Iowa voters to try and persuade them from this Huckster. There isn't a lot of time - and it's an innovative thing that Thompson's campaign is doing, letting you call one by one, right now, voters in early primary states, to help Fred out. It doesn't cost a cent.

Well, since I’m a Southern Baptist who voted for Carter, I guess I know.
But, it’s not 1980...and most people are a little more informed. I also think there are very few pure “social values” voters the MSM love to talk about with their divide and conquer strategy.
What we have to fear is liberal “preachers” who lead their “flocks” astray.
And...Carter got his butt kicked in 1980. Thank goodness.

I am one of them, as my church (Episcopalian) seems to have been “Left Behind”, (probably a bad joke).
I realize that churches are full of sinners. But, when the churches work so hard to become “socially acceptable” to these, I just can’t support them.
