That’s called indoctrination, or brain-washing, even if well-intended.

Or, it's what Plato called education.

That's enough. I sentence both of you to read the first few chapters of C.S. Lewis's The Abolition of Man with particular attention to his discussion of The Green Book.

Cheers!

Just reread it Saturday night, oddly enough. One of my all time favorites. My point was that Plato's view of education was that it should teach the good and virtuous to the kids. He had no negative view of teaching morality to kids as indoctrination. Lewis' point of Men without Chests falls in the same vein.

From what little I’ve seen, it looks like “The Golden Compass” is just work of a faker (director) hoping to hitch his DERIVATIVE work to the tail of Narnia.

And from Disney's point of view, Narnia is just trying to hitch onto the tail of LOTR.

The salient point to my mind was the particular emphasis that the teacher claimed to be subject to the same precepts and morality which he was passing down, and claimed no liberty to depart from it or "improve" upon it.

Cheers!

If your faith is so weak that a mere movie can threaten it... you’ve got other issues.

(((((

I think a major concern about children seeing this movie, is that they will want to read the trilogy which gets quite blatantly anti-Christian.
The movie, itself, is innocuous = sort of a loss leader to introduce children to the books.

Well, imitation is the sincerest form of compliment.
Even in Hollyweird!

A film called “The Golden Compass” opens December 7. It is based on the first book of a trilogy titled His Dark Materials. The author of this children’s fantasy is Philip Pullman, a noted English atheist. It is his objective to bash Christianity and promote atheism. To kids. “The Golden Compass” is a film version of the book by that name, and it is being toned down so that Catholics, as well as Protestants, are not enraged.

The second book of the trilogy, The Subtle Knife, is more overt in its hatred of Christianity than the first book, and the third entry, The Amber Spyglass, is even more blatant. Because “The Golden Compass” is based on the least offensive of the three books, and because it is being further watered down for the big screen, some might wonder why parents should be wary of the film.

The Catholic League wants Christians to stay away from this movie precisely because it knows that the film is bait for the books: unsuspecting parents who take their children to see the movie may be impelled to buy the three books as a Christmas present. And no parent who wants to bring their children up in the faith will want any part of these books.

“The Golden Compass: Agenda Unmasked” is the Catholic League’s response. It provides information about the film, “The Golden Compass,” and details what book reviewers have said about Pullman’s books; a synopsis of his trilogy is also included.

Copies are currently available of the electronic edition of the booklet. To order, use our online form or call 212-371-3191 (a pdf will be emailed to you). The cost is $5.

It is important that all Christians, especially those with children or grandchildren, read this booklet. Anyone who does will be armed with all the ammo they need to convince friends and family members that there is nothing innocent about Pullman’s agenda. Though the movie promises to be fairly non-controversial, it may very well act as an inducement to buy Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials. And remember, his twin goals are to promote atheism and denigrate Christianity. To kids.

Please get the word out.

that’s constructivism. Like those who try to have kids discover their own multiplication methods instead of teaching them the efficient reliable standard algorithms.
Taught knowledge comes before critical thinking and that comes before practical experience. Then you can go back and reevaluate what you have learned.

All discussion of religion should wait until adulthood when children have some life experience to filter the lessons through and think critically about.

#####

How do you equate this statement with your previous remarks:
Post #13:
“Exactly. Belief that is never tested with a contrary view isn’t worth much.”

and

“I take it you don’t think this is an idea worth exploring with your kids ? If they are not exposed to differing opinions, they will never be able to debate their beliefs based on the merits. They will have only dogma to rely on.”

to quote two examples of your posts on this thread.

Are you just arguing for the fun of it, or are you anti-religious at your core, and sympathetic to the author of this anti-God trilogy?

“My ex-wife calls herself a Christian.”

Got ya beat! My Ex-Husband actually told me that I HAD to forgive him because Jesus has! (He got another woman pregnant while we were married!!!) Then he found “religion.”

Yep. Sure. Whatever. Loser. LOL!

“No, it’s not weak faith that keeps a Christian from beholding open sin.”

Well said. It is wisdom.

Thank you. If what you say is true, I will be returning these to Barnes and Nobles. I saw where Pullman was making this out to be the killing of a false god, but I guess to an atheist, all gods are false, so his deception persists even when explaining himself.

You ever wonder why God gives talent to people who will despise him? Like this writer, gays (good at art and fashion), mad men, etc? He must see a bigger picture than we can. I always joked that atheists are God’s way of getting an objective opinion of Himself.

That it is a false god is one of the things that would have fit prior to the end.

I’ve already told my kids we aren’t see this movie and to not ask me to see it, lol! I told them it is evil and about kids who want to kill God.

Some on this forum scare me with their lax attitude toward a blatant attempt of the entertainment media to introduce their children to witchcraft.

I dabbled in the occult as a young adult and these things are not "entertainment". Opening doors in young impressionable minds .......gives me chills after knowing what I experienced. I used to think tarot cards, horoscopes and psychics were just "fun". They're not. Evil plays for keeps....and if you don't know how to shut those doors....you're in trouble. JMHO

“Abstain from all appearance of evil.” “Think on those things which are good, pure...” This Christian isn’t paying good money to further the interests of God-hating producers and authors

I am with you on that! Thanks for the passages :-). Always good reminders.
