Cleveland Browns defeat Baltimore Ravens (on "Pinball Field Goal")
Cleveland Plain Dealer ^ | Monday, November 19, 2007 | Tony Grossi

The Browns' 33-30 overtime win Sunday was proof the ball is now bouncing their way.

A crushing, heartbreaking defeat to the rival Baltimore Ravens on Sunday was averted when a controversial, game-tying field goal by Phil Dawson at the end of regulation took a crazy bounce.

The 51-yard kick into the wind glanced off the left upright and bounced off a metal support behind the crossbar. The ball then was ejected forward through the goalposts.

It looked like a blocked shot in basketball.

One field official immediately signaled the kick no good, and the Ravens danced off the field with an apparent 30-27 victory.

Confusion ensued. Replays clearly showed the ball crossing the plane before bouncing back, but a field goal is not reviewable by instant replay.

Referee Pete Morelli reversed the call after a lengthy discussion with the two officials stationed under the goalposts. He also conferred with the NFL communicator in the replay booth.

Consider it goal-tending.

I think this is the first major break that has gone the Browns' way since they returned to the NFL in '99.

That was weird. Listening to Ravens radio after the game was interesting.

That's a play you won't see every day.

Good for the Brownies. They deserve a break.

The play was not reviewable. The incorrect call of the field should have been the last word.

Baltimore won this game. I am not a Baltimore fan, but rules are rules.

That was strange. There also was the feild goal that hit the crossbar camera in the Pack-Panther game.

It is if officials have conflicting calls.

They did not have conflicting calls. They both called it no good. The game was over.

I’m no fan of the Browns (or the Ravens) but that was clearly a field goal.I just can’t see why the Ravens are so bent out of shape.

I saw the clip of the field goal...and I’m amazed at whats NOT being focused on here.

How is it TWO REF’S blew the call in the first place, even though they were standing UNDER THE GOAL POST?

That Baltimore lost the game isn’t all that surprising.

The Refs were Democrats. They voted against the field goal before they voted for it.

HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!!! Gotta love Cleveland getting some luck now and then. The only team in the NFL to have never hosted or participated in a Superbowl.

The better question is, why is that not “reviewable”? Isn’t that want instant replay is for; to get the correct call??

The replay I saw only showed one of the refs signalling No Good. They TV feed cut away at that point, and the announcer announced it was no good, and they focused on the “human interest” shot of the dejected kicker. The only replay that bears looking at here is if the second ref signaled No Good at any point.

If the second ref signaled No Good, the game should have been over at that point. If he did not make the call, then the call is reviewable as traderrob6 said above. I overstated my case above, because I thought both refs had signaled no good. That’s what I get for listening to the idiot announcer guy.

It wasn’t reviewed, it was discussed. One official thought it went through another thought it did, they huddled, they yacked, they got it right (it did go through). The officials can huddle to discuss a call, nothing against the rules about that.

I do not know all the history, but I think it was a huge mistake by the NFL to put the Ravens in the AFC North. There is so much hatred between the teams in this division, that it is not going to end well. They should have moved Buffalo into the AFC North and the Ravens into the East.

"I just can’t see why the Ravens are so bent out of shape."

Unfortunately, there are idiots that feel that common sense has no place. Everybody and their mother knows what the right call is but the two guys under the uprights blew it, so..... WE'RE NO.1, WE'RE NO.1!!!

Whether it's a missed call during the game or burning the cheating evidence in the league office, it doesn't matter because our team won, WE'RE NO.1!!!
