Young Brooklyn Man Heard Screaming, 'I've Got A Gun!' On 911 Tape; Ignored Officer's Directions To Surrender

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The Brooklyn teenager who was shot and killed Monday by NYPD officers while carrying a hairbrush had pulled the concealed brush out from under his clothing and aimed it at officers as if it were a gun, causing officers to open fire, Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday.

Kheil Coppin, 18, was pronounced dead after being shot eight times amid a flurry of 20 bullets.

Community leaders are also demanding answers.

"I don't care whether they are black, Latino, or white, when they join the force most of them turn blue," said City Councilman Charles Barron. "When you turn blue, you police the white community one way and you police the black community another way.

Wow, they missed with 60% of the shots. Those cops need more range training.

Proving that a brush with the law can have serious consequences.

Cops are taught to respond as an individual marksman. The military are taught to respond as a team. Here is the difference. Twelve cops on line with weapon unholstered. Perp appears before them and draws a gun and shoots one round at them and misses. All twelve cops will open fire until the perp goes down. Soldiers are taught to engage targets that appear in their sector. Same scenario, except only three of the twelve who are closests to the perp would open fire. The rest will just take cover and scan their sectors for any other target and protect the firers flanks. Result, cops end up using more bullets to take down a perp and suffer bad PR.

Hair brushes don’t kill people, people kill people.

He should have brushed up on the law before confronting the police.

“Kheil Coppin, 18, was pronounced dead after being shot eight times amid a flurry of 20 bullets.”

Heard it said that one will be 50% as good, when the hammer drops, as your best day on the range. These fellows hit at 40%. Must be the “ultra new york” triggers on those glocks (12-15 lbs pull?).

I once had an older white guy "pull" his pipe and say "bang" while I was writing a citation;if my reactions had been hair-trigger ,he and my job would have been smoked! And if it had been a gun ,I could have ended up dead, since I was taken by surprise !

It isn't smart to make sudden moves in some situations.

No sympathy for the perp here. In Philly, we just had 2 more LEOs shot yesterday, and we buried one last week who was pretty much assassinated. I’m biased, my old man was a policeman and I have 3 cousins on the force, I don’t know how they do it. You couldn’t pay me enough to defend this ungrateful pathetic city.

Seems that those cops “bristled” at being threatened with a hairbrush. 60% of their shots missed....but just by a hair.

Now they have to comb through the crime scene to see who’s shots hit.
