IMHO it was a set up. Juan Carlos and Zapatero knew that Chavez was going to cross the line and they took advantage of it on a Saturday night prime time.
Please, take into account that National Elections in Spain are coming in three months, and Zapatero has a weak image among Spaniards as result of his concessions to ETA, Morocco, France...

Well Chavez should indeed shut up, but who is the Spanish “King” that anyone should care about him. He has far less substance even than the British “royals”.
