Mayor who targeted illegal immigrants easily wins third term

HAZLETON, Pa. - Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta easily won re-election Tuesday to a third term, and in his victory party he talked about fighting drugs and violence in the city.

He also talked about the issue of illegal immigrants.

He said, "We've seen what illegal immigration has done to our small town quality of life and we have said, 'No! We will not let this happen."' He said, "We will fight!"

Barletta, a Republican, gained national prominence by targeting illegal immigrants living in his Luzerne County city.

Yesterday, he defeated Libertarian candidate John Medashefski, a coffee shop owner who had argued that the city should drop its costly effort to push through a law targeting illegal immigrants.

Unofficial returns showed Barletta winning 90 percent of the vote to Medashefski's 10 percent.

Combine this with the mayoral race in Colorado where the anti-illegal candidate, running in a single issue race, beat his opponent 61-39 percent.

They really like him. I hope the politicians in Washington pay heed.

"Yesterday, he defeated Libertarian candidate John Medashefski, a coffee shop owner who had argued that the city should drop its costly effort to push through a law targeting illegal immigrants."

What Medashefski fails to understand is how cost-effective the effort ultimately is. In the short term it it preempts all the costs associated with the presence of illegals and their ancillary crimes, and in the long run, the enforcement costs drop virtually to zero.

Clearly, this is a winning issue for Republicans. Expect to see President Bush not being asked to campaign with anybody next year.

There is talk about Barletta running against Rep. Paul Kanjorski next year and then for the Senate in 2010 when Specter retires. He is very attractive and articulate. He has not backed down an inch despite the deluge of hate he has received from the La Raza crowd and the ACLU.

Maybe Barletta will be the darkhorse candidate to which Lou Dobbs is referring.
