Life with Rudy - Can Giuliani appeal to the pro-life, pro-family voters?
National Review ^ | October 11, 2007 | Douglas Sylva

Rudy Giuliani fostered an important ecumenical moment last week, albeit one that he may not have welcomed, as Protestant and Catholic leaders alike questioned whether his presidential aspirations were invalidated by his pro-abortion beliefs. Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis announced that Giuliani should not present himself for Communion in Burke’s see, thereby also signaling to Catholic voters that they should reconsider their support of him.

James Dobson, president of the influential evangelical group, Focus on the Family, reported that “50 pro-family leaders” agreed “almost unanimously [that]…if neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join others in voting for a minor-party candidate.” Since these leaders already know Hilary’s position — life begins if the mother says it begins — what they really decided was to abandon the Republican Party, if Rudy wins the nomination.

Great post. As you said, Rudy is NOT a perfect candidate. No one is. But the problem is--is that Giuliani is ABOUT AS IMPERFECT AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY GET! (Paul doesn't even count).

As I say ad nauseum here,,,

Liberal Republicans like Giuliani are much more dangerous than liberal democrats,,,

because liberal Republicans BLUR THE DISTINCTION between conservatism and liberalism,,,

MAKING LIBERALISM MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE!!!

Maybe I'd better clarify my remarks.

"Can Giuliani appeal to the pro-life, pro-family voters?"

Not only NO, but HELL NO!!!

"so If its Rudy v. Hillary I go all out for Rudy: All Out."

Why not really go ALL OUT and vote for the real deal instead of the wanna-be? Hillary!

because, if the current Republican leadership figures they can float a pro-abort left leaning politician

If Rudy is the nominee, it was the voters in the Republican primaries who gave him the nomination not the current leadership. Backroom deal brokers only exist in history or in the movies.

Can Giuliani appeal to the pro-life, pro-family voters?

No...I'm sorry. Giuliani is a very good speaker and has a unique and nuanced approach to his social issues.

I know a Conservative when I see one and Giuliani and Romney just don’t feel right.

Thompson will fill the void created by Giuliani. Romney is just a walking, talking PowerPoint presentation. I would like to know in my heart that Republican values will triumph this time. How do we know that after elected, Giuliani would not flip-flop back to the liberal ways he had in NY. For that matter, Romney in MA fits that mold as well. Say anything, do anything to get elected, just like Clinton and Edwards. The MSM will not force Giuliani on Republicans.

The MSM will not force Thompson to dance to their tune. Thompson will begin to show WE THE PEOPLE his down home common sense values. My mamma called em "good brought uppins." Be patient...people are just now beginning to pay attention. Giuliani will not be the Republican candidate, Thompson will be.

Just my opinion…want a piece of Apple Pie?

I will be voting for president of the U.S. not for a new Messiah.

What will happen "if Rudy gets the nomination" and THEN it is made public that he is a bisexual? Or, maybe something worse.

Do you worry at all about things like that?

You conveniently left off the fact that Rudy finds Ginsberg acceptable too.

BTW, I find it fascinating that you use "ALPA" in your nick. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't that union ROUTINELY endorse Democratic candidates? Enough said.

Wasn’t Reagan once pro choice? He remarried and had problems with his kids.

"When true leftists get into public office, they make negative changes that very frequently prove irreversable."

Now why do you think that is? Could it be that when you vote for leftist Republicans, there is no impetus for them to want to reverse any of those "negative changes" you're whining about? Just something for you to think about.

He’s the one guy who has proved that he can run a government well in a liberal environment.

He left New York with the second-highest debt in the nation.

Rudy has a long history of being a law and order guy.

And, of being a gun grabber and abusing Constitutional rights of citizens.

There is a chance that Rudy will appoint to the Supreme Court someone like Roberts, Alito, Thomas or Scalia.

There isn't a snow ball's chance in hell that he will nominate a justice that would overturn Roe. Democrats would have veto power over any nominee and there is no chance Giuliani is going to expend political capital putting conservative justices on the court.

And he started out as an FDR Democrat but he repented and converted.

And, most importantly, Reagan ran as a pro-life candidate, appealing to Democrats with a moral conscience.

The marital woes of Giuliani are a little more recent. No one ever saw Jane Wyman weeping on television after hearing about her split from the media.

But Giuliani's marriages alone would not necessarily disqalify him if he saw the need for constitutional and legal protection of innocent life.

It is a question of political realism as well. He will split the party over this and make a Democratic victory more likely. That's dumb. George Bush, Sr. bit the bullet in '80 and signed on to Reagan's pro-life platform.

Reagan's genius was putting together the coalition that made conservative Republican victories possible. The pro-life, evangelical and Catholic constituencies were an integral part of that.

Breaking that up is just stupid. There is no logical, rational, or realistic reason to do that.

You conveniently left off the fact that Rudy finds Ginsberg acceptable too.

That's a lie. He never said she was an acceptable justice. The point Giuliani was making, which is distorted by those afflicted with Rudy Derangement Syndrome, was why should Alito and Roberts jump through hoops in a confirmation process when they are at least equally intelligent and posessed at least the same legal experience that Ginsberg has when she breezed through.

I remember back to the Nixon's first presidential campaign

Then, you ought to remember what a nightmare the Nixon era was for Republicans. That's what Giuliani will return the nation to.

The Nixon Presidency actually makes the Clinton Presidency look pretty good, considering Republicans gained 500 seats nationwide and managed to force the Slickster into signing welfare reform and a balanced budget.

From a conservative standpoint, politics should be about electing conservatives to office. Electing liberal Republicans will result in the advancement of liberalism.

I just noticed that when you mentioned it. At first I read it as “ALPO”.

As for Rush, he admitted he was carrying water for the “Republicans” during the last election. I’m ticked he’s not denouncing Giuliani more than he is. I’m really ticked Hannity is practically endorsing him- though I’ve never thought much of Hannity in the first place.

I couldn't agree more.

Why can't either fight for conservatism and against liberals within the Republican party? It just doesn't add up.

Reagan has been married for 25 years when he ran for President. There is no evidence he cheated on any wife he had, let alone while in office.

Reagan became a passionate pro-lifer. Giuliani still supports taxpayer-funding of abortion.
