Many people mistakenly put the muzzle to their temple or under their chin and strike the forward lobe. It makes for an awful mess, but is not lethal.

What is hard to believe is that anyone could do this and be able to keep trying.

What did he expect, a million dollars and a one-way ticket Denmark for him not to kill himself?

Jeez Louise. From the article:

Although the final forensic determination could take several weeks, the attorney general said that Peterson had his personal .40-caliber Glock when police found him. The three gunshots to the head came from a .40-caliber.

"The three gunshot wounds to the head included two nonfatal rounds with entry points below the chin, and one fatal shot that entered Peterson through the right side of the head," Van Hollen said.

"Each of the three head shots were fired while the gun was in contact with his skin, or extremely close to the skin," he said. "These three head wounds are consistent with self-inflicted wounds, and not consistent with long-range rifle fire."

When I was training as an EMT back in NY in the 70s we had a presentation by the NY City medical examiner. They showed slides from autopsies, including one of a guys head with 9 bullet holes in it. The coroner asked if it was murder or suicide. Everyone but me said murder. The doctor said that I was correct but asked how I knew. My explanation was simple logic that there was no sense in asking the question if it was murder, therefore it had to be suicide.

He told the story that the guy had gone to shoot himself in the head and 4 times he flinched as he pulled the trigger. It was a little gun, maybe 22 or 25 caliber, and those shots ended up passing under the scalp but didn’t penetrate the skull and he had 4 entry and 4 exit wounds from that, total of 8 bullet holes. He then took the gun and put it to his forehead for hole number 9. End of story.

But that wasn’t a 40 caliber

Maybe this guy had rigged the gun to make it fire full auto or in a 3 shot burst?

Two is understandable. People often forget that by putting the barrel in the mouth, the bullet can hit the Maxilla, AKA, the HARD PALLET. It is not unheard of for one seeking suicide due to emotional pain to suddenly realize physical pain because the round hit that maxilla and moved someplace non fatal.

Although, a second shot to the temple would fix that problem.

I can see no reason why a third shot would be required.

He must have been shaking like a leaf!

Actually there’s a historical parallel to this. When the German army pulled their coup against Hitler in 1944 and it failed, one of the ringleaders, General Beck, attempted to take “the Prussian officer’s way out” and commit suicide at Wehrmacht headquarters. His first shot just grazed his head. He tried again a couple of minutes later, and the second shot was also non-fatal. Supposedly at that point someone in the room turned to a junior officer and said, “help the poor gentleman.” He was eventually finished off by an SS sergeant.

I’m against the death penalty. Not because I think it’s wrong to put a murderer to death. But because we might make a mistake and kill an innocent man.

I have no problem with swift justice in a case where there is no possible doubt of guilt.

Three might do it.

We have a guy (from MA, iirc) awaiting trial here in VT, that killed a few people over his former girlfriend, including her mother, and shot himself twice in the head as the police were closing in.

I'm pretty sure he was arraigned the next morning, in court, albeit in a wheelchair.

My wife's cousin made that mistake. She shot herself in the head when she was 18. She's 38 now and has seizures and memory problems caused by the injury, but she's still alive.

If he tilted his head back with the muzzle under his chin he made a mess of his face but it’s not fatal. It takes years of plastic surgery to fix a failed attempt under the chin.

It’s too bad he didn’t shoot himself before shooting the others.

I still think they will find that there were many other indications of his instability long before he proved it beyond a doubt.

I have read over the years many cases of people who did violent things, people who supposedly knew them say that the violent act did not seem consistent with their knowledge of the person. In almost 100% of the cases, there were multiple indications of the instability of the person. Maybe he had a brain tumor. Maybe he thought he was the victim, and just maybe, had done a number of things to convince the ex-girlfriend that he was indeed evil and a worthless pig. Just wait, the mud should be flying once the shock wears off and people can remember him better.

The person who called him a worthless pig was absolutely correct.

The lesson to be learned is that when you insult someone, especially someone who is a police officer (whom you believe to be a worthless pig), make sure you can adequately defend yourself.

PS, I am not saying to go out and insult police (or anyone for that matter) and then get them when they try to retaliate. Just be prepared (to defend yourself against the worthless pigs of the world), cause you never know what that someone will do, especially that someone who is an ex-boyfriend.

There is a hilarious part in a South Park episode where a guy takes about 10 shots to kill himself. He shoots himself through the cheek and he’s cussing the whole time.
