Many people mistakenly put the muzzle to their temple or under their chin and strike the forward lobe. It makes for an awful mess, but is not lethal.

What is hard to believe is that anyone could do this and be able to keep trying.

Actually there’s a historical parallel to this. When the German army pulled their coup against Hitler in 1944 and it failed, one of the ringleaders, General Beck, attempted to take “the Prussian officer’s way out” and commit suicide at Wehrmacht headquarters. His first shot just grazed his head. He tried again a couple of minutes later, and the second shot was also non-fatal. Supposedly at that point someone in the room turned to a junior officer and said, “help the poor gentleman.” He was eventually finished off by an SS sergeant.

My wife's cousin made that mistake. She shot herself in the head when she was 18. She's 38 now and has seizures and memory problems caused by the injury, but she's still alive.
