Press Release: New Zealand Government Hon Pete Hodgson Minister of Health

28 September 2007

A Third of Projected Type 2 Diabetes Preventable

The fight against obesity must continue, not only to improve New Zealanders diets and physical activity levels but to prevent obesity-related illnesses like diabetes, Health Minister Pete Hodgson said.

A report released today by the Ministry of Health projects that the number of people with diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes may increase from about 120,000 in 2001 to 180,000 in 2011.

"The Diabetes Surveillance population-based estimates and projections for New Zealand 2001 - 2011 shows that of the projected 60,000 new diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes cases in 2011, about a third will be the result of an increasing number of people who are overweight and obese and the rest will largely be due to our ageing population and other factors," Pete Hodgson said.

New Zealanders used to be some of the healthiest people in the World...

Too many Big Macs, now?

The disease is insidious, but not necessarily because of modern capitalism/agribusiness/hipster conspiracy theory du jour: it’s diagnosed earlier in life and treated more aggressively. Not even thirty years ago, folks had to take animal-source insulin or, well, assume room temperature.

I would, however, give some nod to many in my community who blame processed carbohydrates, etc. While I don’t think there’s this giant conspiracy from grain refiners, I would still like to see the arguments pro and con.

I’m also of the opinion that we tend to crave what we need, as long as we’ve gained exposure to said foodstuffs: for instance, a spinach salad can be incredibly-satisfying, as can, well, scrambled eggs, tomato juice, and a nice bowl of bran.

Have a great weekend.

Polyunsaturated fats. They cause a lot of cancer too.

I have a hard time keeping up, admittedly. Wasn’t olive oil (I believe a Polyunsat) supposed to be a miracle circa 1995?

Olive Oil is a monounsaturated fat, and is healthy, but you can’t cook with it at high temps. It evaporates.

The much demonized coconut oil is a good alternative, just stay away from the hydrogenized and the partially hydrogenized as there is no need to detoxify it like many of the seed oils out there, that were formerly used as paint binders.

Ah, yes. I fondly recall Planter’s Cocktail Peanuts being done in coconut oil. Damn, they were good and filling.

As part of my inherent Diabetic Skepticism, I will also bring hydrogenation to the table. No calls for banning or anything, but certain skepticism.

It's a fact, in 1920 Dr. S. Sweeny produced reversible diabetes in all of his medical school students feeding them a high vegitable oil diet for 48 hours. None were previously diabetic.*

In 1998 researchers were able to induce test animals to develop diabetes by feeding the diets high in polyunsaturated fat(Parekh, 1998).*

Cancer - Polyunsaturated fats are greatly immunosuppressive, and anything that suppresses the immune system is likely to cause cancer.(Newsholme 1977).

Many vegetable oils(polyunsaturated) promote cancer because they are easily oxidized to form carcinogenic free radicals(Hopkins 1981).*

Oils were hydrogenated to make them hard (firm) at room temperature after the process was discovered; lard needs no such treatment, why adulterate it?

Yeah, like how people really need sugar, and tobacco, and drugs when they crave them.

:)

Only a suggestion here.

Ever try a rural “locker plant”? The butcher shop of rural America. They often buy farmer raised hogs and render the lard. Also, buy the pork fat and home render. It’s not hard to do.
