Officer Reportedly Buried Puppies Alive
NBC 17 ^ | September 19, 2007

FAYETEVILLE, N.C. – A police officer is accused of burying puppies alive, officials said.

Seven puppies were rescued from Officer John Leggett’s backyard. Leggett, 44, has been charged with animal cruelty and is now on administrative leave while under investigation.

Police said at least one puppy was found dead.

Officers were called to Leggett’s home Saturday.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Leggett’s daughter, Anna Alicia Leggett, called authorities at about 4:15 p.m. and reported that puppies were being buried alive.

Leggett, who breeds black and tan coonhounds, reportedly buried the puppies because they were not pure-bred.

The puppies are now at an animal shelter, where officials said they are doing well.

Animal Control Officer Sue Nicholson said she has received many calls about adopting the puppies, and she is making a list of names. The puppies need to be with their mother for a few more weeks, she said.

Oh you had to show me a pic...Now I want one. But I don’t think that my 4 shih tzu & my shih/peek mix would like it one bit. That pic is so cute.

We’ve had a black and tan Coonhound mix from birth (born in my kitchen). They have got to be the most coolist, totally outrageous dogs that I have ever had. She is absolutely loyal, protective of my wife, whimsical as hell and the choice is between the class clown or the life of the party. This dog even talks to you. She is truly one of the best dogs that I have ever had. They can be a litle finicky at times but they are well worth it.

Yes, they usually pay a fine and walk away, maybe with a class or two on how to treat animals.

I had a couple of yards of top soil delivered in the spring. (Big pile!) When I took a shovel to it, early this summer, to disperse it - I inadvertently opened a bunny nest. There were three little bunnies, all snuggled together, eyes not open yet.

I knew they would not make it after I uncovered their little den. It was several months before I could spread that top-soil.

BTW - I am NOT a PETA person.

I don’t think I’ll be pinging this one - this goes beyond weird to vile. If the scumbag had managed to do himself in in an amusing manner while torturing those puppies I’d ping it as a verbal peeing-on-the-grave party.

Back in the day, the remedy for this guys problem was a tote sack with a brick on the way to his favorite fishin hole. OTOH, burying pups alive is no less humane than putting them into a vacuum chamber, the old accepted way for vets to kill unwanted pets. One thing for certain, he really screwed up doing this while his daughter was home. Now, go ahead and fire away all. Maybe if he had just shot them in the head with his service pistol,or took them to the vet and let him shoot them in a vein, I see no difference actually.

I think if an animal is to be put down, it should be as quick and painless as possible. I doubt drowning is either.

The PETA people were killing dogs in the back of the van in which they picked up the animals. They then disposed of the animals in private dumpsters, one of them belonging to a grocery store where they got caught.

At least some of the animals they received, they took from a veterinarian who did not euthanize the strays and worked to find them homes. The vet gave the animals to the PETA workers because they were told that the animals would be found homes.

Where do they keep getting all these halfA-- cops?

I could tell you a horror story or two about a renegade cop who lived a couple doors down from me. The guy was nutz. When his chow attacked my daughter (in our front yard) the responding officers closed rank and stonewalled the investigation.

We sued him for our daughter's medical expenses. He'd been warned about his dogs getting out numerous times and terrorizing the neighborhood, but he would let them run amok anyway. After we went took him to court (and won)......he started a campaign of harassment. When we'd report it... he would get worse and nothing happened to him. We finally moved.

My point is this. If a pet owner can direct a vet to kill an animal, why can’t the owner do it with the same impunity. Had this guy flooded the cage with nitrogen and gently put the pups to sleep permanently before he burrieid them, would everone be OK with that?

What a horrible thing you and your family had to endure. I hope your daughter is alright.

The brotherhood of police tend to stick together - no matter what. Not good.

The peta people were such hypocrites, but euthanizing animals and burying them alive to kill them are two entire different things. This guy is a monster to bury any living creature alive.
