FAYETEVILLE, N.C. A police officer is accused of burying puppies alive, officials said.
Seven puppies were rescued from Officer John Leggetts backyard. Leggett, 44, has been charged with animal cruelty and is now on administrative leave while under investigation.
Police said at least one puppy was found dead.
Officers were called to Leggetts home Saturday.
According to the Fayetteville Observer, Leggetts daughter, Anna Alicia Leggett, called authorities at about 4:15 p.m. and reported that puppies were being buried alive.
Leggett, who breeds black and tan coonhounds, reportedly buried the puppies because they were not pure-bred.
The puppies are now at an animal shelter, where officials said they are doing well.
Animal Control Officer Sue Nicholson said she has received many calls about adopting the puppies, and she is making a list of names. The puppies need to be with their mother for a few more weeks, she said.

Cut him some slack, he’s a cop. Wanton killing of dogs seems to be a job requirement nowadays. He was probably just taking his work home with him. Or perhaps he’s trying to emulate Michael Vick.

Sadly, there will never be an end to people like this.
At least now it is a crime.

Oh my gosh, what on earth is wrong with this idiot? Even if the puppies had to be euthanized, does he not know of a more humane thing? I cannot imagine how awful being buried alive would be (reminds me of that poor little girl in Florida, Jessica Lundy). Evil people abound.

I think this cop’s breeding was more suspect than that of the puppies.
Pure evil.

I hate peta as much as the next guy, but didn't they euthanize some dogs at their shelter and throw the bodies away? I don't like it, and it certainly goes against what they "preach", but homeless animals are disposed of everyday.
Did they do something worse? I didn't really follow too closely.

Oh, and also in most states it is still a misdemeanor, which means no jail time.
However, the laws are getting tougher. Just gotta keep pushing.

misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year in prison. at least in most states. did you mean that usually misdemeanors don’t mean jailtime due to weak sentences?
To: teenyelliott
Had this been WV instead of NC, he’d be charged with a felony.
Just imagine....a puppy-killer cop in jail.
What a fun time he’d have.

His daughter turned him in! I wonder how old she is and whether she’s in a witness protection program now.
