Genetics “Central Dogma” Is Dead
Creation-Evolution Headlines ^ | September 12, 2007

Posted on 09/16/2007 3:45:54 PM PDT by GodGunsGuts

“The gene is dead... long live the gene,” announced subtitles to an article in Science News this week.1 Geneticists have come to a striking conclusion over the last few years: genes are not the most important things in DNA, if they even exist as a concept.

The “central dogma” of genetics, since Watson and Crick determined the structure of DNA, is that genetic information flows one-way – from the gene to the protein. In the textbooks, a gene was supposed to be a finite stretch of DNA that, when read by the translation process, produced a messenger RNA, which recruited transfer RNAs to assemble the amino acids for one protein.

As Patrick Barry described in his article “Genome 2.0,”1 the situation in real cells is much messier. “Mountains of new data are challenging old views,” his subtitle announced, including the “modern orthodoxy” that only genes are important:

"Researchers slowly realized, however, that genes occupy only about 1.5 percent of the genome. The other 98.5 percent, dubbed “junk DNA,“ was regarded as useless scraps left over from billions of years of random genetic mutations. As geneticists’ knowledge progressed, this basic picture remained largely unquestioned...." "Closer examination of the full human genome is now causing scientists to return to some questions they thought they had settled. For one, they’re revisiting the very notion of what a gene is."...

I don’t doubt it - I merely meant to imply that as far as single cells go, the successful swimmer from our Dad’s side of the family is pretty much the John Galt of the single celled world, and with that being the case, bonus points are awarded for any Python reference.

I see no reason to drag Jewish stereotypes into this debate. Is that the best you can come up with?

It's a quote from that old anti-semite, David Ben Gurion.

It proves the wisdom of Israel founding father David Ben Gurion, who observed that for every two Jews there are three opinions. Ben Gurion's prescience is validated again and again, as Israel struggles to reconcile its identity as a democracy, a homeland and the Jewish state. While the differences among the Bucharian Jews living in Phoenix pale in the context of the rifts in the Jewish state, they speak to the issue of how we define ourselves and where we feel most welcome and at home.

Seems that I recall some of the early junk DNA debates had the evos mocking creationists for saying that the junk DNA wasn’t so junk after all and that there’d be some use found for it. The reasoning was that God doesn’t make junk; every thing God made had purpose and that the purpose for what appeared to be junk would someday be found.

I see no reason not too. Without Jewish jokes we would all be ignorant antisemites. Laughter has been a big ingredient in the melting pot.

David Ben Gurion was a self-hating Jew, and has Jewish blood on his hands. Karl Marx was also a self-hating Jew. Are you going to quote him next?

If swimming is good for
developing shoulders, arms
and legs, why haven’t we
developed any shoulders,
arms and legs?

The subject had nothing to do with the Jews. They already have a tough enough time in this world without inventing new ways to malign them.

As it always has been. The DNA simply provides the scaffolding and the little micromachines that produce supplies required to "do stuff".

Now, on to the quantum processors who do their best work in the 7 other higher dimensions we usually don't think about much or encounter often.

It's the single cell guys buried deep in layers of granite that you have to worry about. Just what are they thinking?

And why???!!!???

I think epigenetics is going to prove part of Darwinism wrong. You don’t carry a lot of junk DNA - it’s counter to the optimization evolution strives for.

You gotta' give up on this "mutation thing". There's a gazillion DIFFERENT types of genes readily found in the open ocean ~ it's time we got cracking with an artificial lifeform into which we could plug them to see what they do

Presumably they "do" something ~ might even be the makings of an FTL intergalactic spacecruiser out there for all anybody knows.

Certainly the critters who terraformed Earth left us with some of the good stuff Fur Shur.

...Eisenhower said to Ben-Gurion that it was difficult to be the leader of a nation of 150 million people, to which Ben-Gurion replied, that was true, but he had a nation of a million prime ministers to assuage.

Even a very high percentage difference leaves a very great number of items that differ when you have a large base. 1% of 30,000 genes is, of course 3000 genes! A lot can happen.

Of course the information value of the genome is far greater than the gene count

Look beyond evolution, and all kinds of possibilities open up.

None of which help creation "science."

Let’s not go on about David Ben Gurion...he was socialist slime, had Jewish blood on his hands, and was a perfidious stumbling block to the creation of the modern state of Israel. In short, I’d rather not talk about him, or even mention his name.

Guess they ought to get used to it. The coming discoveries in how the genome works and what's really in there are going to make everything you thought you knew seem terribly primitive and irrelevant.

That goes for the Creationists as well ~ we will start delving into how quantum processors work, and what they are doing in our DNA, and they will be at a loss to explain the ongoing creation that continues to organize, structure and use the universe as its home.

A problem? I brought you’all’s attention to that article FRIDAY ~ and to me it looked like plenty of room for grants for what will become mainstream biology. Right now mainstream can’t quite handle it ~ but all the text books need to be rewritten and writers are lining up for the big bucks as we speak!

Uhh, what is that ~ religious what?

Plenty of religious folks (e.g. a series of Popes) have revised their thinking as discoveries have been made.

I even think there's sufficient information coming on line here to drive out the "creation once" crowd within months ~
