Boys like blue, girls like pink and there isn't much anybody can do about it, researchers said on Monday in one of the first studies to show scientifically that there are gender-based color preferences.
Researchers said these differences may have a basis in evolution in which females developed a preference for reddish colors associated with riper fruit and healthier faces.
...
"We speculate that this sex difference arose from sex-specific functional specialization in the evolutionary division of labor," she wrote in Current Biology. "There are biological reasons for liking reddish things."
...
"Women have a very clear pattern. It's low in the yellow and green regions and rises to a peak in the purplish to reddish region," she said.
...
For men, thinking about colors was less important because as hunters they just needed to spot something dark and shoot it, Hurlbert said.

Yes. The DNC has to be very happy about this photo.
I think you just nailed the reason homosexuals like hues of purple. :)
There are always exceptions to the rule. I’m female and I really don’t like pink at all. I prefer blue by a long shot.
You could just tell your favorite color is clear.
Yes, this is yet another example of junk science. Stick some ‘evolution’ in your explanation and it will get published.
you can be sure someone will try to contrive an evolutionary explanation for the ‘little black dress’ or why women prefer white wedding gowns for brides.
I have seen plenty of junk science in my time, but I would not put this in that category. The way I see it is that when you have a trait that is universal to women (or whatever demographic group) regardless of where they are in the world, it makes good sense that it has a biological basis.
because they are ‘queens’ and purple is the color of royalty?
I know an inside joke when I reads it.
I am not sure either of those are universal to women in all cultures, so please do me a favor: don’t hold your breath waiting for such an explanation.
Lots of good-looking middle-aged women dance. I can confirm that a man who can dance has a significant advantage over non-dancers.
because red is associated with riper fruit and healthier faces?? That’s the junk I’m talking about
It doesn’t explain why men prefer blue.
A: The grip.
I want to rebuild a classic car - something along the lines of a ‘57 Chevy - and paint it hot-pink, with a zebra interior and a chain-link steering wheel.
Women in power don’t wear much color because they aren’t taken seriously if they do.
They don’t try to act like grown women. They act like teenage girls. And teenage girls act exactly like what you describe.
Perhaps so, but it's hard to tell for this study so far. The article states that study was on “a group of men and women”. I assume (!) that the formal publication goes into more detail and justifies the leap to biology, but Prof. Hurlbert doesn't have it available on her web page yet.
It’s vibrant yet not ostentatious. It brings a person alive.
we also don’t see any genetic markers identified
