TAMPA - Investigators have removed computers from the family home of a University of South Florida student accused of having pipe bombs in his car, according to Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
He said the FBI contacted the parents of Yousseff Samir Megahed of 4959 Anniston Circle, Tampa, who were on vacation, and got permission to search their home. When they returned, their computers were gone.
Megahed is one of two USF students arrested near a naval base in South Carolina over the weekend. Ahmed Abda Mohamed's family questioned why the men are being held on such a high bail amount. "They know their son is innocent," said M. Nachabe, faculty adviser for student Mohamed, after speaking by telephone with the man's parents in Egypt.
Many questions remain in the case of Mohamed, of 2107 E Nedro Road, Tampa, an engineering graduate student, and Megahed, a 21-year-old undergraduate. Mohamed's age is listed variously as 24 and 26 in law enforcement records.
The men were arrested Saturday afternoon in Goose Creek, S.C., on charges of possession of an explosive device. After a prosecutor argued the men were flight risks, a judge set bail at $500,000 for Mohamed and $300,000 for Megahed.
The FBI declined to discuss the case. An arrest affidavit from the Berkeley County, S.C., Sheriff's Office says that Mohamed told deputies he made the devices from components he bought at Wal-Mart. The men told deputies that the explosives were fireworks, according to Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sharon Weber said the FBI had gone to a store for surveillance footage but declined to say which store or what is on the tape.
"The FBI has been to a store and picked up videotape," she said. "It's an open investigation. I don't think it would be appropriate to respond to specific questions." It remained unclear Tuesday exactly why the men were in rural South Carolina or if they had a destination. Neither man has a criminal record, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
On July 24, Tampa police accused Mohamed of illegally shooting squirrels in an east Tampa park. Police say he and Ahmad A. Ishtay, 19, used a pellet gun to shoot the animals in Rowlette Park. Both were issued citations for discharging a firearm and using an illegal method of taking game, a report said. The case has not been resolved, court records show. "He invited me," Ishtay said about going to the park with Mohamed.
Ishtay, who rents a Temple Terrace house and works at Boston Market, said he met Mohamed and Megahed through a roommate. He said he didn't know the roommate's last name, but he was from Mauritania. Another of Ishtay's roommates, Ghassan Salhab, 27, said the man from Mauritania moved here from Canada recently and returned there Monday. Ishtay and Salhab said that sometimes when Mohamed and Megahed visited their house in Temple Terrace they would cook, but neither knew them well. Megahed's family did not return a message for comment.
Mohamed's family lives in Egypt, but his faculty adviser said they're well aware of the situation and working for their son's release, asking the Egyptian consulate for help.

Thanks, O.
Lots of “incidents” lately. Every time I hear or read of somthing involving South Florida, I think of Sami al-Arian. His reach extends far.

Thirty Terrorists Killed, 12 Detained During Iraq Operations
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 8, 2007 Iraqi and coalition forces killed 30 terrorists and detained 12 suspected terrorists during operations today in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood, military officials reported.
The individuals detained and the terrorists killed during the raid are believed to be members of a terrorist cell known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators from Iran to Iraq, as well as bringing militants from Iraq into Iran for terrorist training.
As Iraqi and coalition forces approached the objective location, they observed two armed men in tactical fighting positions assessed to be early warning operatives for the targeted individual. Ground forces engaged and killed the two armed men. While in the objective area, forces raided a concentration of buildings and detained 12 suspected terrorists. Ground forces received sporadic small-arms fire throughout the course of the operation.
During the operation, the assault force and overhead aerial support observed a vehicle and a large group of armed men on foot attempting an assault on the ground forces. Close-air support engaged the terrorist vehicle and organized terrorist force, killing an estimated 30 terrorists.
“Coalition forces continue to gain momentum against the illicit movement of lethal materials from Iran. Iranian-supported militia extremists and terrorists are seeking to destroy the future of Iraq, and we’ll continue to capture or kill them and dismantle their organizations,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman.
Also today, during an early-morning raid north of Tikrit, coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists for their ties to an al Qaeda key leader. Intelligence reports indicate that the targeted individual is a key al Qaeda leader in Bayji who oversees a cell of about 400 terrorists and is linked to numerous attacks on coalition forces.
Iraqi and coalition forces this morning targeted a Mosul-based al Qaeda emir who assists with terrorist operations in Kirkuk. While coalition forces were on the targeted location, two individuals were observed rapidly maneuvering toward the assault force guarding the target. Coalition forces engaged the two men, wounding both. They were taken to a military medical facility, where one later died. The terrorist who died was positively identified as the targeted individual.
“Our operations targeting al Qaeda in Iraq are progressively dismantling and destroying the terrorist network,” Garver said. “We will continue to attack al Qaeda at the current fast and steady pace.”
In other operations this week:
— Coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists and killed one terrorist during operations over the past two days targeting al Qaeda in Iraq and its associates in central Baghdad and Kirkuk.
— Northeast of Samarra, coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists during a precision raid yesterday. The targeted individual was the al Qaeda military emir of Samarra. The three individuals were detained for their association with the targeted emir.
— Iraqi soldiers with U.S. Special Forces advisors detained five alleged insurgents in the Aamel area of Baghdad yesterday. Iraqi troops detained their primary targets without incident, along with three other suspicious individuals who were present during the raid. The primary individuals detained are believed to be responsible for conducting attacks on Iraqi and coalition forces and Iraqi citizens in the area.
— Iraqi army scouts and U.S. Special Forces troops conducted a series of targeted raids in western Iraq on Aug. 5, detaining an individual allegedly responsible for running an extortion network. Iraqi soldiers raided a residence and office near Rawah and detained their primary suspect without incident. Several bags and boxes of paper documents, computer equipment and compact discs also were seized during the operation. The detained individual was allegedly engaged in extorting money from local contractors and using those funds to finance al Qaeda activities. He also is accused of paying insurgents significant sums of money from construction project contracts he was awarded in the Rawah area.
