:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Disaster Looms in Pakistan

Decorum was abandoned as accusations ricocheted between the wood-panelled walls of Pakistan's national assembly on Monday night. "Murderers! Murderers of innocent people!" screamed an MP from a religious party, his yellow turban shaking as he wagged a finger towards the government benches.

Five female parliamentarians, their faces concealed behind black and white burkas, slapped the benches with open palms. Another mullah stood up and started shouting. The speaker strained to maintain order.

Others were less captivated by the debate on last month's siege of the Red Mosque, in which more than 100 people died. One man snoozed at his desk. Across the vast hall others started whispered conversations. And high above them Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a dapper man with a pinched, clean-shaven face, looked on impassively from his giant portrait on the wall. Full story...

“Bailey’s confessed killer saw himself as ‘a good soldier’”
By Angela Hill and Harry Harris, STAFF WRITERS
Article Last Updated: 08/05/2007 02:53:21 AM PDT

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “OAKLAND — In his confession to police, 19-year-old Devaughdre Broussard told detectives he considered himself “a good soldier” when he shot and killed journalist Chauncey Bailey for writing negative stories about Your Black Muslim Bakery, where Broussard was a member and worked as a handyman, authorities said.

Broussard, who also uses the spelling Brossard, was formally booked Saturday on suspicion of murder. He was already on probation for a robbery conviction in San Francisco, and also had a pending case on charges of assault with a firearm from a 2006 San Francisco incident. In addition, there was a failure-to-appear warrant out for his arrest in that case.”

President Bush Commends Congress on Passage of Intelligence Legislation

White House News
In Focus: National Security

When our intelligence professionals have the legal tools to gather information about the intentions of our enemies, America is safer. And when these same legal tools also protect the civil liberties of Americans, then we can have the confidence to know that we can preserve our freedoms while making America safer.

The Protect America Act, passed with bipartisan support in the House and Senate, achieves both of these goals by modernizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Over the past three decades this law has not kept pace with revolutionary changes in technology. As a result, our intelligence professionals have told us that they are missing significant intelligence information that they need to protect the country.

S.1927 reforms FISA by accounting for changes in technology and restoring the statute to its original focus on appropriate protections for the rights of persons in the United States - and not foreign targets located in foreign lands.

Today we face a dynamic threat from enemies who understand how to use modern technology against us. Whether foreign terrorists, hostile nations, or other actors, they change their tactics frequently and seek to exploit the very openness and freedoms we hold dear. Our tools to deter them must also be dynamic and flexible enough to meet the challenges they pose. This law gives our intelligence professionals this greater flexibility while closing a dangerous gap in our intelligence gathering activities that threatened to weaken our defenses.

We know that information we have been able to acquire about foreign threats will help us detect and prevent attacks on our homeland. Mike McConnell, the Director of National Intelligence, has assured me that this bill gives him the most immediate tools he needs to defeat the intentions of our enemies. And so in signing this legislation today I am heartened to know that his critical work will be strengthened and we will be better armed to prevent attacks in the future.

I commend members of Congress who supported these important reforms, and also for acting before adjourning for recess. In particular, I want to thank Mitch McConnell and John Boehner for their strong leadership on this issue, and Senators Kit Bond and Dianne Feinstein for coming together in the Senate on an effective bipartisan solution. In the House of Representatives, Pete Hoekstra and Heather Wilson were instrumental in securing enactment of this vital piece of legislation before the August recess, and I thank them for their leadership.

While I appreciate the leadership it took to pass this bill, we must remember that our work is not done. This bill is a temporary, narrowly focused statute to deal with the most immediate shortcomings in the law.

When Congress returns in September the Intelligence committees and leaders in both parties will need to complete work on the comprehensive reforms requested by Director McConnell, including the important issue of providing meaningful liability protection to those who are alleged to have assisted our Nation following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

11 terrorists killed, 10 suspects detained in Coalition operations

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed 11 terrorists and detained 10 suspected terrorists during operations in the Tigris River Valley targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq Monday.

East of Balad, Coalition Forces conducted a raid targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq emir responsible for carrying out attacks against Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces in Salah ad Din province. Immediately upon their arrival at the targeted location, the ground forces received heavy small arms fire. In self-defense, Coalition Forces called in close air support and confirmed seven armed terrorists were killed during the air engagement. Coalition Forces proceeded to secure the target building and detained two suspected terrorists.

Coalition Forces targeted a close associate of the al-Qaeda in Iraq emir of the northern belts around Baghdad during a raid northwest of Tarmiyah. As they approached the building, armed terrorists engaged them with small arms fire. Coalition Forces, acting in self-defense, returned fire and killed three terrorists. The ground forces secured the building and detained four suspected terrorists for their alleged ties to the senior leader, whose network is known for deadly car bombings and attacks on Iraqi infrastructure.

Near the town of Khaylaniyah northeast of Baghdad, Coalition Forces conducted coordinated raids targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq foreign terrorist network. As the ground forces moved toward their first objective, surveillance teams saw an armed man maneuvering toward a nearby canal. Coalition Forces called close air support to engage the perceived hostile threat. The terrorist was killed and Coalition Forces found him with a heavy machine gun.

The ground forces also discovered a weapons cache containing rocket-propelled grenades and a launcher, dynamite and an anti-tank mine. Coalition Forces detained three suspected terrorists during the operation.

In a raid east of Samarra, Coalition Forces detained one individual associated with a suspected senior foreign terrorist who is believed to support suicide bombing operations in the Samarra area.

“We continue to apply pressure on terrorists and their leaders,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “Each successful operation gives us better understanding of the terrorist networks and how to attack them.”

Domestic Terror in Iran
OpinionJournal.com ^ | August 6, 2007 | AMIR TAHERI

Posted on 08/05/2007 9:07:20 PM PDT by gpapa

Iran has just carried out the largest wave of executions since 1984.

It is early dawn as seven young men are led to the gallows amid shouts of “Allah Akbar” (Allah is the greatest) from a crowd of bearded men as a handful of women, all in hijab, ululate to a high pitch. A few minutes later, the seven are hanged as a mullah shouts: “Alhamd li-Allah” (Praise be to Allah).

The scene was Wednesday in Mashad, Iran’s second most populous city, where a crackdown against “anti-Islam hooligans” has been under way for weeks.

The Mashad hangings, broadcast live on local television, are among a series of public executions ordered by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last month as part of a campaign to terrorize an increasingly restive population. Over the past six weeks, at least 118 people have been executed, including four who were stoned to death. According to Saeed Mortazavi, the chief Islamic prosecutor, at least 150 more people, including five women, are scheduled to be hanged or stoned to death in the coming weeks.

Gang attacks ambulance in Sundsvall (Sweden)
The Local ^ | 08/05/2007

Posted on 08/06/2007 2:31:25 AM PDT by Republicain

A gang of youths are reported to have attacked an ambulance in Sundsvall in the early hours of Sunday morning. A number of other violent incidents were also reported in the town on a night police described as “very messy”.

At around 1.30am police were called to Ljusdalen, north of Sundsvall, where ambulance staff called out to help a woman with respiratory problems suddenly found themselves under siege.

“The healthcare workers locked themselves into the ambulance when they were prevented from driving away,” said police spokeswoman Eva Lindberg.

“The youths smashed the windscreen and aimed kicks at the ambulance,” she added.

The ambulance staff eventually managed to escape and the situation had calmed down by the time police arrived.

Just a few minutes earlier a 24-year-old man was stabbed in the thigh outside a party on Bergsgatan in the centre of town.

“A dispute out on the street turned violent and one man was slashed in the thigh with a knife. The injury is not thought to be life-threatening,” said police spokesman Stefan Edin.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of having carried out the attack.

Two girls also claim to have been assaulted on Bergsgatan, Expressen reports.

“Exclusive
Teens behind terror ‘hoax,’ sez new letter”
BY JOHN MARZULLI
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Monday, August 6th 2007, 4:00 AM

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A new letter purportedly written by the author of terrorist threats against Goldman Sachs claims the whole thing was a hoax “conceived by three misguided teenagers.”

The four-page letter, hand-printed in red ink on lined paper just like the original batch of 40 letters mailed to media outlets around the country in June, was sent to a Daily News reporter last month and immediately turned over to federal investigators.

An FBI spokesman said yesterday that the new letter is still undergoing analysis at the agency’s lab in Quantico, Va., but it appeared to contain similarities to the original threats.

“The investigators believe the latest letter may have been written by the same person, but they’re not convinced the underlying story in the letter is the truth,” said spokesman James Margolin. The story revealed in the latest missive is nearly as bizarre as the warning sent out in the original letters.”
