Laser Disorients Sheriff’s Chopper Crew (CA)
Stanislaus County Sheriff Chopper Pilot Blinded by Laser
Last Saturday should have been a routine night patroling the skies over Stanislaus County.
But Officer Jeff Sprueill and his pilot were temporarily stunned by a bright light coming from the ground.
“It was a very bright green laser beam, it almost blinded us for a moment,” said Sprueill.
The pilot took evasive action, turning the aircraft away from the light and dropping altitude to avoid an emergency landing.
Crews on the ground could not locate the source of the bright light.(snip)

Suspicious speedster questioned by FBI
$51,516 in cash found in car
Safford Police officer Brian Avila found something unusual when performing a vehicle search after pulling over a reckless driver on Tuesday - $51,516 in cash.
Aurangzeb M. Sheikh, 19, of Texas was pulled over by Safford Police after they witnessed him driving his black, 2007 BMW G-6 sportscar recklessly on Highway 70. He also drove south on First Avenue at speeds estimated at 80 mph. Sheikh was given a citation for speeding and performing an unsafe lane change.
According to his report, prior to Sheikh leaving, Avila asked him if he had any illegal items in his vehicle. Sheikh stated he did not and then consented to a vehicle search.
Avila found a marijuana grinder, a marijuana joint, an Islamic Republic of Pakistan international driving permit and $51,516 in cash in a duffle bag on the passenger seat.
“When you find those items in that kind of car with someone so young, it raises eyebrows,” Chief John Griffin said.(snip)

CAIR Executive Director Placed at HAMAS Meeting
By The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT)
The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Nihad Awad, participated in a three-day summit of U.S.-based HAMAS members and supporters in 1993.
Until now, he had been identified only as Nihad LNU (last name unknown) in FBI reports and analyses. The meeting occurred in a Philadelphia hotel in the wake of a White House ceremony formalizing the Oslo Accords, a peace deal with the potential to end the decades-old conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
CAIR, which touts itself as Americas premier Muslim civil rights organization, was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror support trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development and five of its officials. Omar Ahmad, who founded CAIR with Awad in 1994 and was previously identified as attending the Philadelphia meeting, also was named as an unindicted co-conspirator.(snip)

TSA checks IndyGo bus passengers (INDIANA)
Screeners from the Transportation Security Administration checked passengers at two Downtown city bus stops this morning, looking for weapons and suspicious behavior.
David Kane, federal security director for TSA in Indianapolis, called it a “VIPR” operation.
“It’s called Visual Intermodal Prevention Response. We have plainclothes inspectors, blue-gloved uniformed security officers who are checking baggage, the behavior detection officers, and federal air marshals, which are the law enforcement arm of TSA.”
Security stations were set up at bus stops at Capitol Avenue and Market Street, and Ohio and Meridian streets.
Some passengers were patted down or submitted to having bags checked.
TSA said the searches were by-permission, meaning patrons could decline to be checked. Those who did would not be turned away, an official said, unless they otherwise appeared to be a security threat.

“Members of Congress Invest in Businesses in Terror-Sponsor States”
By Fred Lucas
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
August 02, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - More than 30 members of Congress, or their spouses, invest in companies that do business in countries that the U.S. government says sponsor terrorists, a Cybercast News Service investigation has established.
Financial disclosure forms show that Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) — one of the leading national security experts in Congress — has hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in nine corporations listed by the Securities and Exchange Commission as doing or having done business with a terror-sponsoring state.
Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) and Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) have smaller investments in as many such companies. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. Robin Hayes (R-N.C.) each have more than $1 million in companies that are doing or have done business with one or more of these countries.
The five countries on the U.S. State Department’s list of terror-sponsors are Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. (The SEC relies on the State Department’s list.)”

“How Best to Attack America?”
By William Hawkins
FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/3/2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Osama bin Laden shared Himmlers low opinion of Americans in 2001, but the reaction to the 9/11 attacks proved Skorzeny right. The United States was shaken from is doldrums and strode across the world like a colossus. That was not the reaction Osama expected, and it must have given him pause.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “With opinion in Congress moving in their direction, it would seem that al-Qaeda would not want to rock the boat. Though some Democrats still talk about redeployment to Kuwait or some other place over the horizon to preserve an option to rescue a collapsing Iraq, the left-wing core of the party has no more stomach for a renewed fight in Iraq than it did in Vietnam.
If al-Qaeda does mount a major terrorist attack, or campaign of attacks, against the United States homeland, it would be an act of desperation. It would be a sign that the surge in Iraq is working, not only in a military sense but in a political sense, as Sunni and Shia tribal leaders are brought into the U.S. strategy of national building. If al-Qaeda is on the run, as many reports from the scene indicate, its leaders may decide to roll the iron dice in an attempt to win in Washington what has been lost in Baghdad. How Americans would interpret such terrorist actions, and react to them, would reveal to the world the state of the nations self-confidence and moral strength, the real determinants of effective power in world affairs.”

Thieves target radioactive devices
Instruments potential source of dirty bomb materials”
VINCE VERSACE
staff writer
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Construction sites and vehicles have been involved when 76 radioactive devices have gone missing in Canada over the last five years.
Devices such as soil moisture gauges, powered by radioactive material, have gone missing from construction sites, fallen off trucks and been stolen from cars, a recent report compiled by Canadian Press indicates.
Ontario and Quebec each had the most missing radioactive device incidents at 18 each.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is tightening controls on radioactive devices for fear some of the materials could be used to create a so-called dirty bomb. A construction company wishing to use a radioactive site must submit an application to the CNSC to be assessed.”
