:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Disaster Looms in Pakistan

Decorum was abandoned as accusations ricocheted between the wood-panelled walls of Pakistan's national assembly on Monday night. "Murderers! Murderers of innocent people!" screamed an MP from a religious party, his yellow turban shaking as he wagged a finger towards the government benches.

Five female parliamentarians, their faces concealed behind black and white burkas, slapped the benches with open palms. Another mullah stood up and started shouting. The speaker strained to maintain order.

Others were less captivated by the debate on last month's siege of the Red Mosque, in which more than 100 people died. One man snoozed at his desk. Across the vast hall others started whispered conversations. And high above them Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a dapper man with a pinched, clean-shaven face, looked on impassively from his giant portrait on the wall. Full story...

I was checking for updates on that for awhile (foreign news); but never found any any good news updates — as far as I know — still missing.

I was listening to a radio report last night was cyber surfing and I was listening to this “things that look normal” report.

It made a lot of sense to me.

Following this trial reminds me of 9/10 all over again.

The lame-stream media just doesn’t seem too interested in this trail —they should be as this is living history.

BTTT!

Coalition Operations in Iraq Disrupt al Qaeda

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2007 – Coalition forces disrupted al Qaeda operations in Iraq with a series of raids today, killing a terrorist leader and detaining more than 25 other individuals suspected of being al Qaeda members and associates.

Coalition forces killed the military emir of Tarmiyah, who officials said was responsible for directing attacks against coalition forces and Iraqi civilians in the area, and another armed man.

When ground forces conducting the raid moved toward the target building, they saw an armed man in a neighboring house maneuvering into position to engage the assault force. Responding in defense against the hostile threat, coalition forces killed him. Another armed man moved to the roof of the target building, and coalition forces also killed him. The terrorist on the roof was determined to be the terrorist emir targeted in the operation. Ground forces detained 11 individuals with suspected ties to al Qaeda as part of that operation.

“We will continue to dismantle the terrorist networks that threaten the security of Iraq,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “The people of Iraq continue to demonstrate their desire to build a secure future, without the influence of al Qaeda in Iraq.”

In other operations today:

— In Baqubah, troops captured a man who is believed to have conducted operations to incite sectarian violence, provide weapons to al Qaeda and attack coalition forces. Ground forces detained nine additional suspects with alleged ties to the terrorist network.

— In Mosul, coalition forces captured an alleged al Qaeda leader who is believed to have provided financial support to al Qaeda, to have facilitated the movement of foreign terrorists and to have controlled terrorist operations in an area south of the Baghdad airport. Coalition forces detained seven of his suspected associates as well.

— Near Samarra, coalition forces detained a suspected senior terrorist facilitator and another individual during two coordinated raids. In another raid, intelligence reports indicated a senior leader of al Qaeda was hiding in a nearby mosque, which was still under construction. Coalition forces entered the mosque without using force and took great care in securing the building. One individual in an adjacent building was detained for his suspected association with the targeted al Qaeda leader. “We respect religious holy sites and use precision operations to target terrorists who disregard the sanctity of those sites,” Garver said. “Al Qaeda in Iraq is not able to hide from us; we will find its terrorists wherever they are.”

— Coalition forces captured an individual believed to be a former terrorist emir from the Baghdad area allegedly working with senior al Qaeda leaders to strengthen terrorist control in Bayji. The ground forces detained four additional suspects for their alleged involvement in Bayji’s al Qaeda network.

In operations yesterday:

— In Muelha, Iraqi security forces with U.S. special operations forces as advisors, detained five suspected al Qaeda terrorists in an operation. Reports indicate the suspected terrorists belong to a cell of more than 100 men suspected of attacking coalition and Iraqi forces in the village south of Baghdad. Additional intelligence shows the cell members conducted these indirect and direct fire attacks with improvised explosive devices, mortars and car bombs.

— Iraqi army forces conducted an intelligence-driven helicopter assault raid detaining 11 suspected insurgents west of Taji. Scouts raided a series of targets and detained the primary suspect, who is believed to be an al Qaeda in Iraq member involved in supporting a sniper cell operating within the Karmah area. After detaining six additional suspects, the soldiers discovered that some men had fled from one of the targeted locations into a nearby mosque. U.S. special operations forces provided external security while Iraqi forces searched the mosque and detained four more suspected insurgents. Five AK-47 assault rifles, numerous identification cards and a rifle scope were seized. Five rocket-propelled grenades, two high-explosive hand grenades, fuses and several containers of homemade explosives were destroyed on site by a controlled detonation.

— Multinational Division Baghdad attack helicopter crews destroyed an insurgent vehicle in south Baghdad. The Apache crews from the 227th Aviation Regiment responded to a call to engage the vehicle, which was abandoned by the insurgents as the helicopters approached.

In other operations this week:

— Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers found a house rigged to explode during clearing operations in the Rashid District of the Iraqi capital Aug. 28. Terrorists have been known to demolish homes with explosives to scare residents into moving. Soldiers attached to the 1st Infantry Division who responded to the report from joint security station Doura found two sticks of TNT and safely detonated them.

— Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division found an intact explosivelyformed penetrator device, five rocket-propelled grenades, two rocket-propelled grenade launchers and a machine gun with 500 rounds on Aug. 28. While cordoning the area off, the troops began taking small-arms fire and killed one insurgent and wounded another as they engaged the enemy.

— Coalition forces, acting on a tip from a local concerned citizen, discovered a large cache of nitric acid buried in drums near the town of Niam Mashawn on Aug. 28. Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division found the cache site on a road about 15 kilometers west of Baghdad International Airport. The man who reported the cache helped the soldiers dig up 411 plastic jugs of nitric acid that were removed to a secure location. Nitric acid often is used in making fertilizer and homemade explosives, and commonly is found in improvised explosive devices.

— On Aug. 27, in Baghdad, troops from the 23rd Infantry Regiment found a set of body armor, U.S. Marine utility uniforms, a coalition forces certificate of achievement, an infrared strobe and various identification cards and passports. The contraband was taken to a coalition forces facility for further investigation.

Troops Kill 11 Insurgents in Attack on Afghanistan Base

American Forces Press Service

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan, Aug. 30, 2007 – Elements of the 1st Brigade, 205th Afghan National Army Corps, along with coalition forces, repelled a direct attack on Firebase Anaconda in Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province today, killing 11 of the attackers.

Insurgents attacked the base from multiple directions with 72 mm rockets, small arms and heavy machine gun fire, officials said. Coalition close-air support conducted precision air strikes, successfully destroying the enemy fighters.

This was the fourth attack on Firebase Anaconda this month. An estimated 74 insurgents were killed in the previous attacks on the base.

The recent probing attacks have reinforced credible intelligence gathered by coalition forces of a planned, large-scale attack on Firebase Anaconda, officials said.

“After several failed attempts earlier in the month to attack Firebase Anaconda, with more than 70 dead insurgents to show for their efforts, we thought the Taliban had learned their lesson,” said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokeswoman. “This engagement was yet another blow to the al Qaeda and Taliban extremist fighters attempting to operate in Afghanistan.”

Two coalition servicemembers were slightly wounded in the engagement. Both have returned to duty, officials said. There were no reports of civilians being injured or killed in the attack.

“Bush Administration scraps plans to screen U.S. foreign aid contractors for terror ties”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The Bush administration has decided to sharply scale back its plan to screen U.S. foreign aid contractors around the globe for potential terrorism connections, deciding instead to begin with a pilot program involving aid recipients in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip before expanding it worldwide.
The decision, announced Tuesday at a meeting of U.S. officials and representatives of nonprofit groups, was made after lawmakers and several large aid organizations said that the global screening requirements were onerous and unwarranted. An official of the U.S. Agency for International Development had earlier promised to defer the program, which initially was to have taken effect Monday.

The global screening program, initially described in a July 17 Federal Register notice, would have required that all nongovernmental organizations seeking funds from the agency provide detailed information about key personnel, including phone numbers, birth dates and e-mail addresses.

That information was to have been reviewed by intelligence and law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to ensure that there were no connections with individuals or groups associated with terrorism or threats to national security. It would have affected thousands of individuals in nonprofit groups, charities, religious organizations, colleges, universities and private corporations.”

Gas pipeline in Balochistan blown up
Thursday, August 30, 2007

Gas supply to several parts of Pakistan's restive Balochistan province was disrupted today after suspected Baloch militants blew up a major pipeline in the mineral rich region. A spokesman for the Sui Southern Gas company said the pipeline was located some 350 km south of the provincial capital Quetta.

Pipelines are targeted regularly in this gas-rich province where tribal groups are pushing for greater autonomy. The blast also damaged electricity transformer, electric poles and several houses. The pipeline caught fire after the blast.

Najmuddin Tarin, a police officer in Sui, said explosives were used to blow up the 16-inch diametre pipeline. One Sarbaz Baluch, who introduced himself as spokesman for Baloch Republican Army, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Soldiers kidnapped by Islamic militants
August 30, 2007

Islamic militants ambushed a large convoy of military vehicles in troubled northwestern Pakistan today, kidnapping more than 100 soldiers after snatching their weapons, officials said.

The soldiers were travelling in 16 trucks and providing security for vehicles carrying food between Wana, the main town in South Waziristan and Ladha, another town in the region, according to two intelligence officials speaking on condition of anonymity. One of the officials said preliminary reports showed that 25 soldiers were kidnapped, but updated his figure to nearly 100, while the other said there were between 100 and 120 soldiers taken. There was no indication if there was a battle or if anyone had been wounded in the incident, they said.

Wanted Taliban leader killed in raid
Aug 30, 2007

KABUL - A wanted Taliban insurgent leader in Afghanistan, Mullah Brother, was killed on Thursday in a U.S.-led raid in the southern province of Helmand, the Afghan Defence Ministry said, citing ground commanders.

Brother served as a top military commander for the Taliban government until its removal from power in 2001 and was a member of the movement's leadership council led by its fugitive leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar. Mullah is a title for a Muslim cleric that many senior Taliban use. It was not clear if the name Brother, which other Taliban leaders have used to refer to him, was a nom de guerre.

French authorities arrest Tunisian national on suspected links to terror group
August 30, 2007

PARIS: French authorities arrested a Tunisian man early Thursday on his arrival at Paris' main airport after being expelled from Ethiopia on alleged terrorist links, police and judicial officials said.

The man, aged in his 20s but not further identified, is suspected of having trained with a militant Islamic network in Ethiopia, judicial officials said on condition on anonymity because the case was ongoing. "A person of Tunisian nationality was arrested this morning at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport," national police spokesman Christophe Gay told The Associated Press.

Gay declined to comment further, other than to say an investigation was under way. Ethiopian authorities had already arrested the man, the judicial officials said. He was expelled to France, where he had been living on a visa until leaving late last year.
