Theres no dilemma about the ferry photo
ARTICLE SNIPPET: Before this turns into the latest over-reaction story, consider that ferry officials have questioned behavior of a variety of ferry riders.
A few days ago, a Seattle Times photographer who is white was taking pictures near the Mukilteo ferry dock. He was stopped and questioned.
Just as police issue pictures of those who may be involved in kidnapping children in Amber Alerts or pictures from bank cameras of robbers of all stripes, the FBI issued the photos because they need help.
Certainly, it would have soothed feelings in the Muslim-American community if the FBI showed the pictures first to a few of their organizations. That might have been a better approach.
But lets not confuse good police work with racial profiling. The behavior of the men, not their skin color or assumed nationality, led to the release of their pictures and the request for help. Anyone who has information about their identity should report it immediately to the FBI.

Heart Medication Triggered False Alarm at Cruise Ship Terminal (Jacksonville,FL)
8/26/07
Authorities say heart medication triggered the bomb scare at the Carnival Cruise Line terminal Saturday afternoon. Security workers with bomb-sniffing dogs detected something suspicious in one of the bags during the pre-boarding screening process. Authorities evacuated the terminal and searched all the bags. The all-clear to board came about seven hours later.
The cruise ship Celebration left Jacksonville for a five-day cruise to Key West and the Bahamas around 10 p.m. Carnival Cruise Line gave $15 shipboard credits to all the passengers for the delay. The Celebration is set to return to Jacksonville next Thursday.

Bin Laden's shadow in Hyderabad
August 26, 2007
During a visit to Hyderabad on July 31 and August 1,2007, I was told that the influence of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami was so pervasive in the local Muslim community that many members of the community kept in their houses pictures of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf [Images] and Osama bin Laden.
Many government servants also complained that the government was aware of this, but the political leadership lacked the will to act against the extremist elements in the local Muslim community. This became evident subsequently in the attempted assault on Taslima Nasreen, the Bangladeshi writer, by some prominent leaders of the local Muslim community when she had gone to Hyderabad to address a meeting. The political leadership, which was hesitant to act against the Muslim leaders involved, played down the incident.
The Pakistani jihadi organisations and Al Qaeda look upon Hyderabad as a Muslim land historically belonging to the Ummah, which needs to be 'liberated' from the control of non-Muslims. They have been systematically setting up sleeper cells in the local Muslim community since 1995 and also among the Muslims from Hyderabad working in the Gulf. There were also reports of linkages with Bosnia. Whenever there has been a major jihadi incident in south India, the police investigation has been bringing out a Hyderabad link, thereby indicating that Hyderabad serves as the GHQ of the pro-Al Qaeda jihadis in the South.
During the visit of President George Bush to India in March, 2006, Hyderabad was one of the cities which saw anti-US demonstrations by sections of the Muslim community. Some Muslim demonstrators allegedly carried photos of bin Laden and shouted pro-bin Laden slogans. If we do not get out of our denial mode and act firmly against the extremist and anti-national elements, a 9/11 is waiting to happen in our homeland.
Thanks for those updates, Oorang.

Seven Iraqis Escape Makeshift Prison, 11 Terrorists Detained
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 26, 2007 Seven Iraqi citizens found their way to a coalition patrol base near Khan Ban Saad, Iraq, yesterday after escaping a makeshift prison, military officials reported.
The alleged captors were linked to an earlier operation yesterday when attack helicopters patrolling the area observed three individuals moving in a tactical formation through a ditch. Coalition forces positively identified the individuals as hostile enemy forces and fired on their position, killing all three.
The escapees identified the remains of the three individuals as their captors and led coalition ground forces to the makeshift prison, officials said.
Inside the makeshift prison, coalition forces found eight bodies believed to be of both the Sunni and Shia sects, which the escapees identified as fellow prisoners. Each of the dead prisoners had gunshot wounds to the head and showed obvious signs of torture, according to officials.
The remains of the dead prisoners were turned over to Iraqi police. The seven escapees, who also showed signs of torture, were taken to an Iraqi clinic for treatment.
In other operations this week:
Iraqi army forces, with U.S. Special Forces acting as advisors, detained two leaders of the rogue Jaysh al-Mahdi militia during two operations Aug. 24 in Baghdad and in Taji. The individual targeted during the Baghdad raid is believed to be responsible for directing a criminal network of individuals who routinely attack Iraqi and coalition forces with improvised explosive devices and explosively formed projectiles in the New Baghdad area. In the second operation, members from the Iraqi Army 9th Division Reconnaisance team detained a Jaysh al-Mahdi company commander Aug. 24 in Taji.
Iraqi security and Iraqi army forces, with U.S. Special Forces acting as advisors, detained two key al Qaeda in Iraq leaders and seven other suspected terrorists in two separate operations Aug. 24 in Baghdad and in the Zaab Triangle. In the Baghdad operation, forces detained an emir believed to be responsible for leading a cell that launches attacks on coalition and Iraqi forces with improvised explosive devices. An intelligence officer of al Qaeda in Iraq captured during the same operation reportedly collects names of Iraqi security forces personnel and targets them for assassination. During the second operation, Iraqi army forces conducted a successful air assault raid and detained seven suspected members of an al Qaeda in Iraq cell operating in the village of Jarnaf Gharbi.

19 bombs found after fatal blasts in India
International Herald Tribune ^ | August 26, 2007

HYDERABAD, India: The police continued to find and defuse bombs throughout the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Sunday, a day after a pair of synchronized explosions ripped through two popular gathering spots, killing at least 42 people and wounding scores of others.
State and national officials are calling the blasts in Hyderabad, a city with a history of Muslim-Hindu tensions, acts of terrorism.
After the attacks, the police defused 19 more bombs - all fitted with timers and placed in plastic bags - at bus stops, movie theaters, road intersections and pedestrian bridges. The police said each of the bombs contained ball bearings and ammonium.

The explosions just minutes apart. The first hit an open-air auditorium in a public park during a laser show about the history of Hyderabad, killing at least 11 people. There were unconfirmed reports of two explosions at the park.
The second blast ripped through a popular restaurant, Gokul Chaat, the heart of Hyderabad’s commercial district. The police and witnesses say the restaurant was packed with patrons. At least 30 were killed.
By Sunday morning, the death toll had risen to 42 as victims died of wounds suffered in the attacks, said K. Jana Reddy, the state home minister.
Both attacks appeared calculated to cause maximum carnage.
“The metal pellets in the bombs had worked as deadly missiles, killing more people,” said Dr. K. Shastry, a senior doctor at a large hospital, which received many dead and wounded.
On Sunday, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, of which Hyderabad is the capital, pointed to Islamist militant groups in neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh.

“Mystery trader bets market will crash by a third”
Renée Schultes”
16 Aug 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An anonymous investor has placed a bet on an index of Europe’s top 50 stocks falling by a third by the end of September, as world equity markets plunged for a third day and volatility hit a three-year high.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The investor has bought a total of 245,000 put options on the index. The September put option with a 2,800 strike was the most popular DJ Eurostoxx 50 contract yesterday, according to data from Bloomberg.”
Don’t know enough about this kind of trading to see if it is a terror-related precursor or not. Will have to monitor.
Global markets are currently shaky due to the partial melt down in the sub prime market. If timing is anything, 911 hit when our markets and economy were in a recessional trend. A mega attack could send world markets into a tailspin, depending upon the severity, for a period until things stabilize again. Must monitor.
“Will have to monitor.”
Yep and thanks Godzilla.

“Saudis set up force to guard oil plants”
Financial Times ^ | August 26 2007 22:04 | By Andrew England in Cairo

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Saudi Arabia has begun setting up a 35,000-strong security force to protect its oil infrastructure from potential attacks.
The move underlines the kingdoms growing concern about its oil installations after threats from al-Qaeda to attack facilities in the Gulf, as well as rising tensions between Iran and the US.”
Finally watching “Inside 911” on the National Geographic channel right now. Wow - really well done.
And interesting that Able Danger is mentioned twice.
“Really well done.”
Good. Sometimes people (not us, for sure); need to be reminded what 9/11 was and still is all about — terror, terrorists and the continuing terror threat.

Explosion Lights Up Night Sky; Residents Evacuated as Precaution (Texas)
08/25/07
A fiery scene over the skies of Rusk County late Friday night after a natural gas pipeline exploded. Rusk County Sheriffs Dispatchers say the pipeline exploded at just before midnight. They tell KLTV 7 it happened on County Road 426, just outside of Henderson. The dispatcher says Kinder Morgan, which is based out of Houston, operates the pipeline.
Several Rusk County Fire Departments responded to the explosion. We were told about five houses surrounding the scene were evacuated as a precaution. A KLTV 7 Viewer Emma Avila sent us two photos of flames lighting up the sky a 1/2 mile away from the scene.
The fire was extinguished early Saturday morning. A cause is not known at this time, and the explosion is being examined and investigated by Kinder Morgan. Kinder Morgan's website says it is one of the largest pipeline transportation and energy storage companies in North America. More information as it becomes available on KLTV 7 and kltv.com.
Fire or smoke was reported within a few hours this evening at five Metrorail stations, forcing service to be shut down in at least two of them. No injuries were reported.
The station at Reagan National Airport was closed, as was the Farragut North Station in Northwest Washington. According to preliminary accounts from Metro, each of the incidents appeared to have a different cause. A Metro spokeswoman said there was no indication of any connection among them, other than the times at which they occurred. "They are all very different," spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said.
The first of the incidents was reported at 5:46 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Square station near the Washington Convention Center. The cause was an arcing insulator, Metro said. About six minutes later, Metro said smoke was reported coming from an equipment room that held electronic components at the airport station. Fire on a track at the Huntington Station, which is at the Virginia end of the Yellow Line in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, was reported at 6:30 p.m., Farbstein said.
At 7:08 p.m. a smoldering cable near the rails near the Farragut North Station prompted the station's closing, sources said. About an hour later, passengers on a Blue Line train said the station at Foggy Bottom near George Washington University was filling with gray smoke. One passenger said she and others got off their train there and were quickly shooed off the platform and up an escalator by a Metro worker clad in a yellow vest.
