COPENHAGEN, Denmark—A former Guantanamo detainee has been arrested in Denmark on suspicion of withdrawing $18,900 from other people’s accounts using stolen debit cards and PIN codes, police said Thursday.
Slimane Hadj Abderrahmane, a Danish citizen, was released from the Guantanamo Bay detention center in 2004 after nearly two years in captivity.
Abderrahmane, 34, was arrested Wednesday and ordered held in jail for two weeks on preliminary fraud and theft charges, police said.
He is suspected of stealing three debit cards—two corporate cards and one personal—and the corresponding PIN codes. Police did not say how he stole them.
They said Abderrahmane, who got a job with the postal service after returning to Denmark, also stole two passports that were sent by mail.
It was not immediately clear how he responded to the allegations, because the court hearing was closed to the public.
Prosecutor Joergen Panum told Danish news agency Ritzau that some of the money and stolen goods were found when police searched the suspect’s home.
In a statement, Denmark’s domestic intelligence and security agency, known by its Danish acronym PET, said they had been monitoring Abderrahmane’s movements and was following the police investigation.
“If PET finds that the mentioned person has been involved in terror-related activities, PET will take the necessary steps,” Jakob Scharf, head of the Danish Security Intelligence Service said. No other details were immediately available.
Abderrahmane, who is of mixed Danish-Algerian descent, was released Feb. 24, 2004, after being held for 747 days at the former U.S. Navy base-turned-detention center in Cuba. He was immediately flown to Denmark.
He said he was in a training camp for Islamic fighters in Chechnya when he was arrested in Pakistan in late January or early February 2002. He was transferred to Guantanamo in February 2002.
Abderrahmane was never charged.

Coalition Forces Capture High-Priority Weapons Smuggler, 62 Others

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16, 2007 – Coalition forces captured a highly sought “special groups” weapons facilitator before dawn today northeast of Baghdad. In other operations this week, coalition forces captured 54 suspected terrorists and killed 19 terrorists.
Coalition forces conducted a raid to capture a known weapons smuggler and distributor connected to various special groups today. The captured high-priority individual was responsible for smuggling explosively formed penetrators, Katusha rockets and other weapons from Iran into Iraq, military officials said. The target was also responsible for distributing those weapons to special groups and extremist militants operating throughout Baghdad. The weapons smuggler had direct ties to senior militant leaders and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force.
On the approach to the objective, coalition forces were fired upon by three armed gunmen. Coalition forces returned fire, killing the three gunmen.
Five others detained during the raid are suspected of distributing weapons smuggled into Iraq from Iran. Four of the detainees tested positive for explosives residue. One of the buildings searched during the raid produced money and “questionable documents” that were confiscated for analysis and evaluation, U.S. officials reported.
“Coalition troops continue to target terrorists who bring weapons and explosives, especially explosively formed penetrators, and other aid into Iraq,” said Army Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “Coalition forces will continue their focused operations against unhelpful Iranian influence interfering in Iraq. We remain committed to dismantling terror networks that seek to kill innocent Iraqis and the security forces that protect them.”
In other Iraq operations this week:
— Coalition forces killed seven terrorists and detained 11 suspected terrorists during three coordinated operations yesterday and today east of Samarra.
— North of Muqdadiyah today, coalition forces targeted a weapons facilitator believed to operate a safe house for al Qaeda in Iraq’s foreign terrorist network in the area. Coalition forces engaged and killed one armed terrorist who showed an intent to engage the ground forces as they approached the targeted buildings and five armed men who attempted to elude the force. Coalition forces detained one suspect during the operation.
— Coalition forces in southern Baghdad today captured a suspected weapons facilitator who also is an explosives expert and has ties to the city’s car-bombing network.
— Iraqi forces with U.S. Special Forces advisors targeted al Qaeda in Iraq and Islamic Army of Iraq terrorist operations in two intelligence-driven operations yesterday across northern Iraq. The forces detained eight suspected terrorists, including the leader of a sniper cell in western Mosul.
— Soldiers from 3rd Brigade, 3rd Iraqi Army Division, with U.S. Special Forces advisors, conducted a cordon-and-search operation in the village of Abu Bareyj, near Bulayj, and detained seven suspected terrorists Aug. 14. One of the alleged terrorists is a suspected cell leader and is believed to be operating a safe house used by insurgents to conduct attacks in the Bulayj area.
— Coalition forces killed six terrorists and detained 26 suspected terrorists linked to al Qaeda in Iraq during coordinated operations east of Balad the week of Aug. 9 to 14.
“Terrorists cannot conceal themselves in small villages, disrupting the lives of Iraqi citizens,” Garver said. “There are no safe havens for terrorists here; we will continue to seek them out wherever they hide.”

Afghan, Coalition Forces Repel Two Ambush Attacks

WASHINGTON, Aug. 16, 2007 – Afghan National Army and police forces supported by coalition forces defeated two separate Taliban ambushes yesterday and today in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, military officials reported.
The first ambush began yesterday afternoon northwest of the Sangin District Center. A combined force led by an element of Afghan National Auxiliary Police advised by coalition forces was on a combat patrol near the village of Regay when insurgents attacked from multiple compounds and trenches using small-arms fire, mortars and rocket-propelled-grenade launchers.
The Afghan police-led force repelled the attempted ambush with small-arms fire and artillery. When the insurgents reinforced their fighting positions, the Afghan police requested coalition close-air support, and coalition aircraft performed precision air strikes on the insurgents.
Two insurgents were wounded, and four were killed in the engagement.
“The (Afghan national security forces) are defeating the extremist fighters in the Helmand River area because (they) are trained and cohesive warriors who have become seasoned and skilled defenders of their country,” said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokeswoman. “Credible intelligence suggests the Taliban will continue their attempt to maintain a strong presence in the region as part of a self-destructive effort to block forces supporting the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan who are clearing the insurgents from the Musa Qala area.”
The second attack occurred today when Taliban insurgents engaged an Afghan army and coalition patrol near Regay. The insurgents attacked the patrol with mortar fire, and the Afghan and coalition forces immediately returned fire, killing a number of insurgents with accurate small-arms and mortar fire.
“The (Afghan National Army) in the Helmand province have reached a state of battle-hardened efficiency, which is bad news for the insurgents,” Bowman said. “The Taliban should know that they will constantly be hunted until this country is free of their terrorist activities. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will not allow any area of this country to be a safe haven for insurgents.”
In other news from Afghanistan, coalition forces used small-arms fire to stop an oncoming vehicle in Kabul yesterday after several non-lethal attempts failed to stop the approaching Afghan motorist.
The driver of the vehicle and a bystander were wounded in the operation.
“Medical personnel are doing everything in their power to care for the wounded civilians, and our prayers are with them for a full, quick recovery,” Bowman said. “Coalition forces take many precautionary measures to ensure the safety of civilians. We regret these two were injured, and a full investigation will be conducted into the incident.”

Leaking the IRGC designation as a terror group on the eve of the SCO summit wasn’t connected in any of the media commentary. It is a warning that there will be an economic price (sanctions at a minimum) for those who get too close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
We don’t need any new designation to act in self-defense against Iran, but we would need this if we were to seek to choke off their suppliers who ship arms to Iran, who then transfers them to Iraq and Afganistan where they are used to kill our soldiers.

This year, many truckloads of small arms and explosives direct from Chinese government-owned factories to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have been transshipped to Iraq and Afghanistan, where they are used against American soldiers and Marines and NATO forces. Since April, according to a knowledgeable Bush administration official, “vast amounts” of Chinese-made large caliber sniper rifles, “millions of rounds” of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and “IED [improvised explosive device] components” have been convoyed from Iran into Iraq and to the Taliban in Afghanistan. . .
According to sources who have seen the intel reports, the evidence of China-Iran arms deliveries is overwhelming. This is not a case of ambiguous intelligence. The intelligence points to Chinese government complicity in the Iranian shipments of Chinese small arms to Iraqi insurgents. . .
Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Richard Lawless told the Financial Times on July 7 that the United States has “become increasingly alarmed that Chinese armor-piercing ammunition has been used by the Taliban in Afghanistan and insurgents in Iraq.” The FT quoted one unnamed U.S. official as saying that the United States would like China to “do a better job of policing these sales,” as if China actually wanted to “police” its arms exports.
Lawless, revered in the Pentagon as a steely-eyed China skeptic, evinced less agnosticism to the FT, explaining that the country of origin was less important than who was facilitating the transfer. One might wonder why Beijing, as a matter of policy, would sell weapons to Iran for the clear purpose of killing American soldiers. “There is a great shortfall in our understanding of China’s intentions,” said Lawless of China’s overall military policies, and “when you don’t know why they are doing it, it is pretty damn threatening .... They leave us no choice but to assume the worst.” . . .

Bush on mortgage woes, China’s T-bills

China would be “foolhardy” to sell the trillion dollars in federal bonds it holds, President Bush said yesterday.
In an interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, the President scoffed at a report in the London Telegraph that the Chinese might consider the so-called nuclear option - selling off the notes that have helped financed the U.S. government’s huge deficit.
“Trying to do what? Trying to crater our economy?” Bush asked. “That would be foolhardy of them to do that.”
The report said China could divest - or use the threat to - in the face of possible trade sanctions.
Bush also weighed in on the subprime mortgage meltdown, pointedly disagreeing with a proposal from Sen. Clinton earlier this week to create a $1 billion federal fund for local and state programs that help at-risk homeowners avoid foreclosures.
Bush told Cavuto the market, plus enforcement of lending laws already on the books, will make a federal bailout unnecessary.
“I think the focus ought to be on the individual homeowner,” Bush said, adding that troubled homeowners can refinance with the FHA. “ I think we ought to crack down predatory lending.
“And then I think we ought to let the market work.”

MINGORA: Pamphlets pasted on the walls of mosques and bazaars in Matta tehsil of Swat district warned locals on Thursday against working for non-government organisations, as a mullah issued a fatwa (decree) calling upon Muslims to wage a jihad against the “friends of infidels,” eyewitnesses said.
Little known Mufti Khalid Shah issued the fatwa saying that “since the US and Jewish states have made Muslims’ lives miserable, jihad is mandatory against the people working for them at international and national levels”. “Every Muslim is under an obligation to wage a jihad against the people working for the US or other Jewish states,” read the fatwa written in Urdu. It also warned people working for multinational companies to quit their jobs or “face serious consequences”.

"Terrorist gang" busted in Kabul

KABUL - Intelligence officials claimed busting a 'terrorist network' and arresting a ringleader during a raid in this capital city. Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, spokesman for the National Intelligence Department Saeed Ansari said the lynchpin named Muhammad Talib was resident of Zindan village of Khak-i-Jabar district.
The alleged terrorist Muhammad Talib, alias Jamal, was nabbed along with his seven colleagues while smuggling missiles, he said. Other members of the gang included Sherullah, Saifullah, Muhammad Khan, Azeemullah, Abdul Sattar, Najeebullah and Toti Shah. They were residents of Khak-i-Jabar, Bagrami and Deh Sabz districts of Kabul, he informed. The detainee was a commander of the Hezb-i-Islami of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar during the era of jihad, said the spokesman.
Muhammad Talib joined the Taliban and served as deputy chief of Bagrami district and then head of the research branch of the intelligence department, he informed.

FBI's caution puzzles experts

TAMPA - For days after the arrest of two University of South Florida students accused of having pipe bombs, the FBI remained silent.
On Wednesday, the agency released a statement telling the public it's possible there's no merit to the accusations against Youssef Megahed, 21, and Ahmed A. Mohamed, 26. Both were arrested Aug. 4 in Goose Creek, S.C., on charges of possession of explosives. "The FBI would like to remind everyone that this is an ongoing investigation and there is the possibility that the publicly reported allegations involving the students may be proven to be false," it read.
An FBI spokesman said the agency is still investigating, that it released the statement only because there's so much interest in the case, and it wants to be fair. "We're just making a request for everybody to be very objective at this time, very neutral," said Special Agent Dave Couvertier.
But local legal experts say there's likely more to it. "That is a highly unusual statement from the FBI," said Tampa lawyer John Fitzgibbons, a former federal prosecutor. Other legal experts agreed, but no one knew what to make of it.
"Well, who knows what that means?" said Ed Page, a lawyer who has experience in Tampa and Washington, D.C. "Perhaps the initial assessment that the trunk contained pipe bombs was inaccurate. That's a weird statement, I've got to tell you, to be coming out of the FBI." Fitzgibbons saw two scenarios. First, the FBI may not have a strong case against the students. Second, the Department of Justice may require a statement of that sort in its communication with the media.

"I don't think I've ever seen an FBI statement that reminds us of our civil liberties," Crawford said. WANA/MIRANSHAH: Ten militants and three soldiers were killed in an attack on a military convoy in South Waziristan, while two soldiers were killed and four others injured when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in North Waziristan on Thursday. “Militants ambushed a military convoy near Chaghmalay, and air support was sought against them. Ten militants were killed and 12 injured while the security forces suffered two casualties,” military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told Daily Times.
Arshad said that two soldiers were killed and four others injured in a roadside explosion near Kaka Ziarat in Teti Madakhel, 70 kilometres north of North Waziristan’s Mir Ali town, and the security forces had arrested six persons for carrying out the attack. The attacked convoy was heading to Dhandikach from the Speenwam area near the Pak-Afghan border, he added. The killing of the militants came hours after South Waziristan Political Agent Hussainzada Khan held a meeting with a 21-member Mehsud peace committee for the safe recovery of 15 Frontier Corps personnel taken hostage by the militants last week.
Maulana Mirajuddin, member of the National Assembly from the MMA, said the clash at Chaghmalay could hinder the safe release of the 15 FC personnel. “We discussed the release of the FC personnel and peace with the political agent. However, hours later the militants and security forces clashed and let’s hope this incident does not affect the release of the kidnapped personnel,” he told Daily Times by phone from Tank city. Residents of Jandola, entry point of South Waziristan, said the Wana-Tank highway was blocked after Mehsud militants stopped traffic to and from Wana. This, they said, may lead to a conflict between the Mehsud and Wazir tribes. Truckloads of tomatoes and apples of the Wazir tribesmen in Wana waited for a long time for security clearance for upcountry transportation as the Mehsud militants blocked the Wana-Tank highway. The highway was later opened for traffic in the afternoon.
Earlier, Wazir elders said they feared a “full-scale war between the Mehsuds and Wazirs if the highway remained blocked and attacks on security forces in Wazir areas by Mehsud militants continued. Maj Gen Arshad said the government would not let the two tribes go to war. Separately, NWFP Governor Ali Jan Orakzai held a meeting with elders and pro-Taliban clerics in North Waziristan on Thursday, officials and security sources said. It was the governor’s first visit to Miranshah after his return from Kabul where he attended the joint peace jirga of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Orakzai said that the 2006 peace deal with the pro-Taliban militants had “no guarantee mechanism” for implementation.

2nd day of Tora Bora assault: Allies press air, ground attacks

KABUL: US and Afghan troops pressed an air and ground assault on Thursday against Al Qaeda militants grouped in the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan, the last known hideout of Osama bin Laden. Afghan media reports said 50 Taliban had been killed but a district governor said these “are only rumours at this stage”.
Local residents said three villages had been bombed by the forces and up to 30 civilians had been killed in the fighting. The US military denied the reports. Pakistani military said it had reinforced the border to stop militants escaping across the frontier.
US military spokeswoman Captain Vanessa Bowman said the operation was intended to disrupt Al Qaeda and other militants in the region. The assault was using precision munitions to avoid civilian casualties, she said, and intelligence indicated the fighters had gathered in dug-in fighting positions. The US-led coalition here and Afghan officials have reported the emergence of a new anti-government outfit in the area called the Tora Bora Front. The shadowy group is believed to be an Al Qaeda-linked unit set up by the son of Younus Khali, a key commander in the Afghan resistance to the Soviets, who later joined forces with the Taliban.
