“NYC officials tight-lipped about madrassa opening”
Jim Brown OneNewsNow.comAugust 13, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A leading counterterrorism analyst warns a taxpayer-funded Arabic language school set to open next month in New York City will likely be pushing an Islamist ideology.
The Khalil Gibran International Academy is scheduled to begin classes next month in Brooklyn, but a cloud of controversy continues to surround the publicly funded madrassa for sixth- to twelfth-grade students. City officials have been extremely reluctant to divulge details of the school, and its principal has come under scrutiny because of her ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and comments she recently made in support of the Palestinian Intifada.
Daniel Pipes, founder and director of the Middle East Forum, opposes the opening of the school because its principal and 12-member advisory board actively promote Islamism.”
Yes.
Then it’s followed by 1018.
darn.
I’m smiling back.
Thanks.
The United States on Monday placed on its terrorism blacklist an Islamist group in Lebanon blamed for major fighting at a Palestinian refugee camp there.
The State Department announced that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has designated the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah al-Islam, which is suspected of having links with Syria, as a specially designated global terrorist group under an executive order aimed at cutting off finances to extremist organizations. The step, which had been expected, cuts off Fatah al-Islam from the U.S. fi nancial system and freezes any assets it or its members may have in the United States or under U.S. jurisdiction, the department said in a statement.

Doctors Give In To Muslims (U.K.)
Monday August 13,2007
Doctors and health workers have been banned from eating lunch at their desks - in case it offends their Muslim colleagues.
Health chiefs believe the sight of food will upset Muslim workers when they are celebrating the religious festival Ramadan. The lunch trolley is also to be wheeled out of bounds as the 30-day fast begins next month.
But staff and politicians branded the move political correctness gone mad and warned that it was a step too far. Bill Aitken, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, said: This advice, well-meaning as it may be, is total nonsense. It is the sort of thing that can stir up resentment rather than result in good relations.

BEIRUT: Lebanon's army commander said last night that the militant group battling troops in a northern Palestinian refugee camp was affiliated with Al Qaeda, the first high-ranking official to make such a statement.
Some Lebanese government officials had alleged the Fatah Al Islam group, holed up in the Nahr El Bared camp was created by Syria, a claim denied by General Michel Suleiman.
"This organisation is not the creation of Syrian intelligence, nor its it supported by pro-government Lebanese groups," Suleiman said on the state-run National News Agency. "It is a branch of the Al Qaeda that was planning to make Lebanon and Palestinian camps a safe haven from which it would launch its operations in Lebanon and outside."

Syria buys advanced anti-aircraft missiles
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
JERUSALEM: Israeli media reported on Monday that Syria has acquired an array of advanced Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles as part of a military build-up ahead of a possible war with the Jewish state.
Syria currently has the densest anti-aircraft deployment in the world, Israels mass-selling Yediot Aharonot daily quoted a military source as saying. Syria has purchased from the Russians the worlds most advanced surface-to-air missiles. This is the last word in plane interception technology.
According to one estimate, the Syrians hold about 200 anti-aircraft batteries of different models in an attempt to provide a response to the absolute superiority of the Israeli air force, it said.
Army radio also reported that Syria has acquired advanced weapons, including chemical warheads for surface-to-surface missiles. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak has nevertheless refused to order the distribution of gas masks to civilians, fearing such a step would further escalate the heightened tensions between Israel and its northern neighbour, the report said, quoting sources in the military intelligence.

“Security Glitch”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “By INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Monday, August 13, 2007 4:20 PM PT
Border Security: A computer “glitch” that paralyzed international terminals at LAX wasn’t an isolated problem. The system routinely crashes at other major airports, knocking out electronic watch lists.
Related Topics: Global War On Terror
It’s a chronic problem that Washington can’t seem to solve. Many frustrated border agents complain that it’s simply not a high priority at headquarters.
But if it’s not paying attention, rest assured al-Qaida is. New intelligence reports warn that it’s trying to sneak terror cells into the U.S. from Pakistan. Its chances improve every time the border security system is disabled.”
News channel 5 in Nashville just reported that the Clarksville TN police dept is shut down and quarantined with hazmat crews on site. Someone brought in a hazardous substance which triggered this response. Several streets around the police dept are also closed. No info on what the substance is.
Possible smallpox contamination at Clarksville PD
By Christine Anne Piesyk | August 13, 2007
The Clarksville Police Department on Commerce Street was locked down shortly after 7:30 p.m. after a young man walked into the department with a suspicious package possibly containing smallpox. Within minutes the Citys Rescue Squad, Fire Department and Homeland Security vehicles arrived on the scene. No one, police officers or civilians, was being allowed into the building, or allowed to leave. The police could not yet confirm definitely that the substance was smallpox virus.
Clarksville Online contacted the department but officers refused to comment on this breaking story or events leading up to it.
A witness to the event, calling from the station after the lock down, reported being told by police that they believed the substance in question to be smallpox virus and would have to wait out the investigative process.
We will continue to follow this breaking news story. A press statement is expected at approximately 8:40 p.m.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Clarksville Police Department has been quarantined and specialists from Fort Campbell were summoned to identify a suspicious package found near the station. Citing scanner traffic, the Leaf-Chronicle reported that "the station may be contaminated by an undisclosed hazardous biological substance."
Officials blocked off Commerce Street, where the station is located, from Riverside Drive to First Street. Mayor Johnny Piper said someone brought in an unknown substance into the station earlier Monday.
"We want the public to know in this particular area that they are safe. It has been determined that this is not an airborne threat," Piper said in a news conference Monday night. "The local citizens who live in this area should be aware and not to be concerned about their health."
Piper said it was some type of foreign substance and that he was not aware of any threats made against any officials or agencies. Police said motorists should avoid the area near the police department Monday night and Tuesday morning because several streets were closed. The department will be closed for at least the next day as the investigation continues.
No other confirmed details are available at this time. Stay with NewsChannel 5.com for more information as it becomes available.

Grammy
Thanks for alerting us and stay safe out there!!
From the article you posted it sounds like the person who brought the package into the station was included in the lock down. I sure hope it isn’t smallpox.
Ping to Grammy (post 1027) and Mata6858’s (1028) posts.
Weird! I guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out if it really is smallpox contamination.
I had my smallpox vaccination in 1945. I wonder if it is still good???
Thank you.
