Ohio Newspaper Under Fire for Outing Gun Owners

CNSNews.com) - An Ohio newspaper's decision to publish the non-public records of concealed carry permit holders drew a strong response, and one gun rights advocacy group published personal but public information about the newspaper's editor.

The Sandusky Register on June 24 published the names, ages and home counties of the almost 2,700 concealed carry permit holders in its circulation area. Ohio gun laws restrict public access to concealed carry records but allow the media to access them.

The printing of the names sparked outrage from gun rights groups, including the Ohioans for Concealed Carry and the National Rifle Association. Critics argue that publishing names and identifying information about concealed carry permit holders puts them at risk being targeted for violence or identity theft.

"Now, someone who has a grudge has a list of targets/victims, and the only reason they have a list of targets/victims is because of the newspaper's unilateral action," the Buckeye Firearms Association said on its website.

You shouldn’t need a permit to carry a gun.

The heart of the matter.

And here’s the text of the letter used to ‘ferret out’ the list of CHL holders. They weren’t going to be satisfied with names - they wanted the addresses, too. Perhaps Mr. Reporter Chauncy needs a call or an email or two...

SANDUSKY REGISTER

June 6, 2007

Ottawa County Sheriff Robert L. Bratton
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office
325 Madison St.
Port Clinton, OH 43452

Re: Concealed carry names, Ohio Revised Code 2923.129 (B)(2)

Dear Sheriff Bratton:

I am writing to you on behalf of myself in my position as a reporter and on behalf of my employer, the Register, a daily newspaper published in Sandusky and located at 314 W. Market St. to request the names, dates of birth and addresses of all individuals who have been granted permits by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office to carry concealed weapons.

This request is made under Ohio Revised Code 2923.129 (B)(2) and we are seeking the information in the public interest. It is my understanding that the information should be provided in a timely manner and I am requesting to receive it on or before Monday, June 18, 2007.

Please contact me at 419-625-5500 Ext. 307, or contact my editor, Matt Westerhold at 419-609-5866 or 419-357-5051 if any further information is needed, or if you foresee any difficulties in complying with this request.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Time to do a little 'research' on Mr. Alcorn.

We'll see how he likes it when the shoe is on the other foot.

Anyone who obtained that concealed weapons permit and moved to remove themselves from the immediate threat/abuser/stalker has just had their name and address published. The risk of violence in that case is very real.

This was incredibly stupid of the paper, as they have made themselves an accessory to any criminal act which is facillitated by their publishing this information.

Personally, if they published all those with CC permits in my area, I’d send all of them Christmas cards next year for sure (or Hannukah cards, as the case may be). I’d also make sure they were invited to our office Christmas party. After we got good and drunk, I’d suggest we go out and pillage like the Vikings.

I’m sure some news reporters live close by...

I know if I were on that list I would sue everyone that had a hand in printing the list. I would be livid. I read on a message board that one woman had moved several times to get away from an abusive ex to protect herself and children. Now thanks to these idiots, he is now stalking her again.

I would sure hope she has a copy of that newspaper article that published her address. I would sue that paper for reckless endangerment.

Ever notice that when the state has the power to deny the right to bear arms and give CC permits only to the politically connected, the newspapers have no desire to list the names but when the state MUST grant a CC permit to law abiding citizens without discrimination that they suddenly think that THOSE people are somehow more dangerous and MUST be “outed”?

That’s pretty much always been public record since the beginning of the country in most states.

Only difference is that now, it’s much easier to get that info.

Texas has already put CCW records off-limits to the media and other states will do the same. The media simply can't be trusted to respect people's privacy.

The Houston Chronicle is the most vigorous marketer of names and addresses to junk-mailers in the region. In fact, the Houston Chronicle IS a leading junk-mailer, responsible for about half the trash in my mailbox. I hear from firms 900 miles away, who got my name and address from the Chron.

“I do not recall the second amendment requring the disclosure of carrying persons’ names. This is an outrage.”

I don’t recall the 2nd amendment requiring permits to carry arms at all. Maybe you could explain why the outrage here is reserved for those publishing the names, instead of the bastards running the state’s government who are requiring permits to bear arms!?!?!?!?!
