We're in the middle of a domestic immigration war, and it's a classic. The blind are leading the blind. The selectively deaf are leading the selectively deaf.
Their enemy is the electorate.
They march onto the Washington congressional battlefield with the banner of their leader, George W. Bush, flapping in the wind.
The coat of arms is golden yellow, emblazoned with a cross on the shield, supported by two bold figures a fruitcake and a skunk all on a field of mockingbirds.
Golden yellow is for cowardice in the face of pressure groups everything from big business and construction to race-based groups, the church and the Mexican government.
The cross on the shield represents the president's continual use of his religious beliefs to bolster his incessant pressure to pass the so-called Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill. He ignores reality for the comfort of his preconceived notion of what God would want, under the guise of compassion and decency.
The fruitcake represents George Bush in the eyes of millions of citizens, as a result of his single-minded determination to get this law passed the will of the people and the reality of the consequences be damned.
The skunk represents what President Bush has become to fellow Republicans and conservatives who see themselves being played the fool by the man they put into office. They consider this the ultimate betrayal of their votes but even worse, of the Republican Party and its ideals.
The field of mockingbirds represents those elected people in government who have shown their contempt for average Americans and those who put them in office. They have no respect for them or their ideas. They mock them with supercilious, contemptuous rhetoric and resort to disparaging insult, like spoiled children in the middle of a tantrum. In fact, they're all spoiled by the ether of the beltway and the bubble of their existence. The ravages of rampant, illegal immigration don't touch their lives. They don't see it or touch it.
The closest they might get is the busboy in their upscale restaurant or country club or when their accountant pays the maid, the cook, the gardener or the nanny. Beyond that, their homes, schools, medical system and benefits are safe from the hoi polloi. It's a good deal if you can get it, and apparently you can; just get elected to high office.
The coat of arms, and thanks to a caller to my KSFO radio program for the seed of that idea, is appropriate considering the magnitude of what elected officials in Washington are doing: the bidding of one man, President Bush.
The wishes of the people who elected them to office, the people who pay their salaries and provide their perks are given lip service barely and even then, conveyed with accusations and derogatory comments. "Name-calling" is putting it politely.
The game can be played by both sides though, and the tsunami of calls and e-mails opposed to the immigration bill resulted in the 45-50 vote not to shut off debate and force a vote.
That was the good news, but George Bush hasn't given up and neither have Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid and the Republicans who are catering to power that power being the money, special interest and open-border crowd.
There are people on both sides of the aisle committed to those open borders and the flow of trade across them. They want a continual flow of low-wage workers to make it all happen for the benefit of the few. They also want those workers because, for them, they translate to votes political support which will keep the power brokers in office.
Those politicians want reelection so badly, they'll sell their soul to the people who provide the political means they require campaign donations.
This domestic immigration war is a battle that sacrifices the country for the expediency of trade and politics. It's a sick and demoralizing dance with death that's going on, and the outcome is not assured.
Even though they've seemingly forgotten that the ultimate, political power is with the voter and '08 doesn't look good for Republicans as a result of all this the outcome of the immigration vote still hangs in the balance.
Reid, Kennedy and Bush seem determined to get a Senate vote by July 4th isn't that date ironic but then the House will battle it out.
Through it all, President Bush is hanging tough. He wants it, and he wants it now.
But, as the saying goes, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings," and Ted Kennedy is barely even vocalizing.
He's still out there waving the George Bush coat of arms. Remember it: the fruitcake, the skunk and the mockingbirds!

The Last election was bad for repubs because they didn't do as they said they would for ten years and they were getting very lax. Now, when you have people like me saying NO MORE will I vote for a Moderate/rino just to keep the party in power you better believe you're not only going to have a problem getting elected again you're going to have major problems winning national elections.
The Repub party better win back their conservative edge!
It is endlessly amazing to witness the lack of wisdom of so many of our leaders. Many are truly ignorant of government, economics, geography, history or politics.
Add demography.
The American voter has an extremely short memory. I'm sure they think they can get away with it.
