Not the Alamo I know

What if this noble defeat starts to be seen as a glorious Mexican victory?

03:23 PM CDT on Sunday, June 3, 2007

Sometimes little things tell a big story. In a South Dallas classroom, a sweet-tempered Latino fourth-grader, the son of poor immigrants, told recent visitors about Santa Anna's historical greatness. He innocently explained why he found the Mexican general's victory at the Alamo to be – wait for it – inspiring.

I thought: We have just heard from the future.

According to the state demographer, by the time that fourth-grader is a father of schoolchildren, Texas will be a majority Hispanic state. Who wants to bet that a lot of Texans then will see the Alamo as this young boy does now? A Texas where most people view events at the Alamo – which constitute the central founding myth of Texas culture – not as a noble defeat, but as a glorious victory, would not be Texas as every generation since the founding has known it. And this is a big deal to a lot of people.

Sam Houston won independence for Texas, and George Bush will give it back. History comes full circle.

Travis, Crockett, and Bowie considered their lives less important than the freedom of their people. As Otto Scott said, “Ours are the same tests and crises that our fathers and forefathers encountered.” Our people face the threat of extinction today, and unless we count our lives as less important than the lives of our children, our people will perish. Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Commandancy of the Alamo
Bexar, Feby. 24th, 1836

To the People of Texas & all Americans in the World—
Fellow Citizens and Compatriots—
I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man—The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken—I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls—I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid with all despatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death.

William Barret Travis Lt. Col. comdt.

Santa Ana was a despicable traitor not only to his own people, but to the men he led into battle.

He got into power by the due process of election because the Mexican government wanted to express their sovereignty through a constitutional government. When he was elected, he turned around and abolished the very constitution that gave him power and began calling himself the Napoleon of the West. He said the Mexican people did not deserve a constitutional government i.e. 'too stupid to have self-governance' and began using his power to quash any resistance to his dicatatorship.

By abolishing this constitution, he nullified the various agreements the Mexican government had made NOT ONLY WITH THE ANGLO SETTLERS THEY HAD INVITED - but with the Tejano families that lived in Texas at the time and supported his government. Look up the Battle of Turtle Creek and the Treaty of Turtle Creek - Book of Texas History Online.

He never gave quarter to the Anglo settlers. Look up the Battle of Goliad.

He never gave quarter at the Alamo.

He used his army to chase families across the Texas wilderness, burning and pillaging everything along the way. This was known as the Runaway Scrape.

Against the advice of his other Generals, who kept trying to argue for more reasonable means of dealing with the Texians, he barreled ahead with only one canon to chase down Houston all the way to San Jacinto (who had two canons) - leaving behind his regiments. Look up the Battle of San Jacinto.

He surrendered to Houston, who let him go, and Santa Ana went back to Mexico and LIED about what happened and tried to recoup his forces.

SANTA ANA WAS EXILED FROM MEXICO.

Santa Ana hid out for a while then made his way to New York - where he managed to coddle his way into the sympathetic hearts of the NY elite there (yes, they existed then too! Poor wittle dictator - let us give you some money!!)

Santa Ana went back to Mexico, regained power...GOT EXILED AGAIN.

Santa Ana was an absolute horror to his country. Because of him and others in the government, clear delineation of the border of Mexico was never achieved, and we had to send troops back down to Port Isabel/Brownsville in order to kick their a$$es back into Mexico (Battle of Resaca de la Palma)

The more I read about this, the less charitable I am towards these people. Have never seen such a passive aggressive lazy a$$ed decietful envious and grasping group of people. Anglos were invited to the Texas area because none of the Mexican natives could be persuaded to colonise the area and fight off the Comanche/Apache/Karankawa that inhabited the area (no offense to the Comanche/Apache/Karankawa intended- they were brave warriors and fought tooth and nail - unlike the current crop of MesoAmerican Indian groups that would rather siphon off someone elses success than actually fight for their own - and they say we STOLE from them?!)...nor could they be interested in cultivating the area.

AM SICK of the perpetual lies...

Another very curious fact about Santa Anna. When his own people finally had enough of him he fled into exile to ....where else? - The good ol’ US of A!

He was by now quite old, but still needed to make some money. He’d got his hands on some rubbery mud that he hoped could be made into tires, but it turned out to be too soft. Still, he persevered, and ended up wealthy on an iconic American product.

He is the joint co-discoverer of chewing gum. Bizarre, but true.

Well, from a military point of view, it WAS a great Mexican victory. In fact I believe the assault on the Alamo was for a long time held up in military circles as the textbook example of how to storm a fortified position.

I somehow can't find fault with his thinking.

Still, I'm condemning our own nation by the same judgement. Half our people vote for Al Gore and John Kerry, and the other half trusted President Bush to defend our border. That includes me.

Mexico is trapped by the same cycle of elite-enforced perpetual poverty.

They are laying the groundwork to institute the very same here.

Keep those guns handy and ammunition dry.

Santa Ana went back to Mexico, regained power...GOT EXILED AGAIN.

After screwing up the defense of Mexico City.

When he was exiled, he hobbled away on one leg. The other, wooden one, sits proudly in the Illinois National Guard museum in Springfield, one of many trophies of war won by brave citizen soldiers of my native state.

Texas and Mexico once had negotiations where Mexico would return the battle flag taken at the Alamo to Texas if Texas would get Sanata Ana's leg. Illinois rightly told everyone to pound sand, there was nothing in the deal to memorialize the stalwart heroism and tenacity of the Illinois Militia.

Here’s something to “condemn our on nation by”. You spoke about Mexicans (from Mexico) being trapped in poverty and getting set to turn America into the same by bringing themselves and their trap HERE.

Around this nation there are liberals (Dems, Greenies, etc.) who flee states that have been ruined by liberalism, who bring the selfsame liberalism to the states they flee to. Colorado and Arizona and other western states are being filled up with refugees from California and being changed for the worse. New Hampshire and Vermont for instance are being ruined with refugees from Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut. Virginia by refugees from DC and Maryland, etc. States that once went Republican and even for Reagan, or had a shot to do so, have or are about to fall perpetually Dem in congressional and presidential elections.

And very, very left wing. Even the so-called moderate Dems and Indys feel compelled to spout thinly disguised leftist platitudes. Look at the supposedly moderate Bill Richardson of New Mexico in his comments on the Iraq war, and the so called moderate VA senator Jim Webb. YIKES!

Not exactly what this thread is about, but related, and on your point, in my opinion.

Apparently Santa Anna had about as much respect for his citizens as Bush and Kennedy do for theirs.

Will they demand that Sam's statue just off I-45 south of Huntsville be torn down?

If you've ever driven north on I45 toward it at night, you know how awesome it is, like a gigantic apparition.

Isn’t it more accurate to say that of the possible voters, 25% for Al Gore, 25% for George Bush and half did not vote at all.

You're exactly right. I saw it happen to my home town...the new 'enviro' regulations, the liberals outnumbering us and taking our lands and local governments. Yep, we've been run out by them for sure and now my government tells me to shut up and be ready to be run out again by yet another group illegally here who think they know better than we do how our communities should function.

You betcha.

I will always remember the first time I saw it. It was still very dark at 4am and I was heading north toward it. There’s a big double curve in the road south of the statue, so it looks like the statue is in the middle of the highway, and it is lit up bright white.

Like I said, it’s like a huge apparition.
