FORT WORTH, Texas Cindy Sheehan, the soldier's mother who galvanized an anti-war movement with her monthlong protest outside President Bush's ranch, says she's done being the public face of the movement.
"I've been wondering why I'm killing myself and wondering why the Democrats caved in to George Bush," Sheehan told The Associated Press by phone Tuesday while driving from her property in Crawford to the airport, where she planned to return to her native California.
"I'm going home for awhile to try and be normal," she said.
In what she described as a "resignation letter," Sheehan wrote in her online diary on the "Daily Kos" blog: "Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it.
"It's up to you now."
Sheehan began a grass roots peace movement in August 2005 when she camped outside Bush's Crawford ranch for 26 days, demanding to talk with the president about her son's death. Army Spc. Casey Sheehan was 24 when he was killed in an ambush in Baghdad in 2004.
Cindy Sheehan's protest started small but swelled to thousands and quickly drew national attention. Over the next two years, she initially drew huge crowds as she spoke at protest events. But she also drew criticism for some actions, such as meeting with Hugo Chavez, Venezuela's leftist president.
"I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement," Sheehan wrote in the diary.
Kristinn Taylor, spokesman for FreeRepublic.com, which has held pro-troop rallies and counter-protests of anti-war demonstrations, said dwindling crowds at Sheehan's Crawford protests since her initial vigil may have led to her decision. But he also said he hopes she will now be able to heal.
"Her politics have hurt a lot of people, including the troops and their families, but most of us who support the war on terror understand she is hurt very deeply," Taylor said Tuesday. "Those she got involved with in the anti-war movement realize it was to their benefit to keep her in that stage of anger."
When she had first taken on Bush, Sheehan was a darling of the liberal left. "However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used," she wrote.
Sheehan said she had sacrificed a 29-year marriage and endured threats to put all her energy into stopping the war. What she found, she wrote, was a movement "that often puts personal egos above peace and human life."
But she said the most devastating conclusion she had reached "was that Casey did indeed die for nothing ... killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think."
Sheehan told The Associated Press that she had considered leaving the peace movement since last summer while recovering from surgery.
Then she decided on Memorial Day to step down and spend more time with her three other children. She said she was returning to California on Tuesday because it was Casey's birthday. He would have been 28.
"We've accomplished as much here as we're going to," Sheehan said Tuesday, saying she was leaving to change course. "When we come back it definitely won't be with the peace movement with marches, with rallies and with protests. It will be more humanitarian efforts."
Last year, with $52,500 in insurance money received after her son's death, Sheehan bought 5 acres near downtown Crawford as a permanent site for protests.
"Camp Casey has served its purpose. It's for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas?" she wrote.

Jake, thanks for your very compassionate and gracious post. I’d love to see more conservatives show this kind of compassion. Cindy Sheehan is obviously unbalanced. I lost my son when he was 25. Even though it was not in time of war, I could have ended up like Cindy, too, if not for the grace of God.
I sincerely hope people will let this woman get her privacy and life back, now that she has the humiliation of knowing how the lefties used her. She reminds me of Norma McCorvey—after Roe v. Wade was passed, “they” didn’t need her any more either, and gave her exactly the same boot. Godly people should pray for Cindy Sheehan. Everyone else should just have enough graciousness to get off her back, now that she’s not newsworthy anymore.

Nice post - I appreciate you view - and I am sorry for your loss.
You know - many, many, posts inside a forum like FR are cold because they come through the non-personal application of a keyboard.
It’s easy to attack - or belittle when you don’t have to look at someone - or consider very very personal feelings.
FR is a great forum - but at times - some members forget human frailty and they fire off comments with little or no consideration.
I have been guilty of this myself - more than I would like to admit.
I cannot imagine the grief Cindy Sheehah must have suffered - I hope I never do.
To: Jake The Goose
I cannot imagine the grief Cindy Sheehah must have suffered So much so that when Michelle Malkin interiewed her almost two years after her son's death, she admitted she was still grieving so much she was unable to put a headstone on his grave. We all grieve differently, and cozying up to commie dictators, (one of whom has just shut down the only free television station in Venezuala with the people rioting in response) besmirching the name of the United States all over the world, burying her uterus is Crawford, demoralizing the troops at every turn, hey, it's just Cindy's way.

Cindy has made herself the heel. If Cindy can can now HEAL, that is good.
Being kind to woman who has aided the enemy, kissed and hugged Chavez, and buried her uterus in Crawford dirt, is actually over the top.
Go home, Cindy, pray that God will forgive you, and pray for your own soul. Casey is probably just fine! He cared enough for his fellow Americans to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Congrats for the mention!
Wish it weren’t so, but I don’t think she can find healing or peace, because her heart is too dark and hard. Her actions belied her self-centered, ungrateful, destructive spirit. I hope Vacaville is braced. Perhaps she will find southern climes more to her liking.

HILLARY CLINTON TRANSPORTATION: BROOMSTICK ONE You may not believe this. I don't know if I would believe it. On April 27, Hillary did a fundraiser in San Diego. At about 1:00 a.m., I heard a huge noise and a crash of some kind. I also heard a high-pitched and horribly scary voice screaming at some people to get the bleep away from her. She called one of them an FJB. I know I've heard that voice before on the news. It was a voice that can send shivers down your spine. My dogs, George and Kramer, went running out through the doggy door. They started yelping, came running back into the house, and lay down by my bed shivering. It was almost as if they were afraid and had seen something truly horrible. Something perhaps like Big Foot or an alien (from another planet, not an illegal alien - we see millions of those in S. California). The next morning, I went out to the backyard and there was the broom. George and Kramer would not get close to it. It had a certain stench to it, kind of like a stench you might expect from a black pantsuit that had not been laundered in awhile. Now look, I have no idea that this is really Hillary's BROOMSTICK ONE. I can make no guarantees because I didn't see it fall, and I didn't see her in the vicinity. But it is quite a coincidence that she was in Southern California convincing suckers to empty their wallets for her a few hours before this thing came down in my back yard. I am about two hours north of San Diego. I was able to get back to sleep fairly quickly and had a dream inspired by the commotion. I dreamed that I heard someone screeching "I'm melting, I'm melting." Oh, if only it were so. When the witch visited the troops in Iraq during Thanksgiving in 2003, it was common knowledge that those heroes risking their lives fighting the Islamofascists nicknamed the Sikorsky Blackhawk that shuttled her around -- "BROOMSTICK ONE." They really did. Here is your opportunity to own a piece of political memorabilia, a keepsake that will be coveted by your friends and co-workers. Wouldn't it be fun to take it to work or show it off at a party? If Hillary happened to be at a fundraiser near you, perhaps you could get her to autograph it. If it really had been used by her, maybe she would want to buy it back from you at a nice profit. If that would happen, here is my advice. Take her offer. You don't want to make that wretched, evil creature angry at you. Something might happen. In her words, you know what I'm talkin' about. By the way, for those who don't know, Hillary and Bill and a bunch of their corrupt pals will be under oath this year in the historic civil lawsuit in Los Angeles -- Paul v Clinton. You will learn about four false FEC reports, the hiding of $721,000 (as determined by the FEC), Hillary's false declaration to the court, a video that is a smoking gun to show her committing a felony, the greatest campaign finance fraud in history, and the Clinton's role in the collapse of Stan Lee Media. If no one buys the broom, that's fine. I will take it to the courtroom in Los Angeles. Maybe I can get Hillary to sign it for me. ...Doug from Upland
