Navarrette: Immigration anxiety is cultural (heh)
CNN ^ | May 21, 2007 | Ruben Navarrette Jr.

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- On Thursday, senators announced a rather remarkable bipartisan compromise on immigration reform that combines border enforcement, a guest worker program, a path to legalization for illegal immigrants, tougher employer sanctions, and an education/skills-based point system for future immigrants.

The same day, the Census Bureau reported what many Americans already know: The United States is becoming a Hispanic nation. Hispanics are the nation's largest minority with 44.3 million people and they account for almost half the growth in the U.S. population. Meanwhile, since 2000, the white school-age population dropped 4 percent, and the white population shrank in sixteen states.

(That reminds me. Memo to the low skilled: "Grow up. Stop complaining. And go get more skills. Then you won't have to suffer the humiliation of being driven out of the market by folks with a sixth-grade education who are here illegally and don't even speak English.")

One of the more fearful members of Congress is Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-California. Last year, while campaigning, he told a largely white audience near San Diego that if we don't end illegal immigration, one day our children would live in a world where instead of electing to take Spanish in high school, they'll have to take Spanish. Bilbray now heads the House Immigration Reform Caucus.

Last week, Bilbray popped up on one newscast after another and milked his 15 minutes. He opposes the Senate plan, which he calls -- wait for it -- amnesty. But, like most of the critics, he offers no alternate piece of legislation to solve the problem over which he claims to be worried sick.

Amnesty worked so well before....as the 9/11 Commission duly noted in these random quotes.

9/22/92 Salameh submitted a fraudulent Seasonal Agricultural Worker (SAW) application attempt to become a legal permanent resident. He claimed that he planted tomatoes, weeded and picked green beans for Oak Valley Farms in Crawford, Texas.

1987 Abouhalima applied for amnesty under the Special Agricultural Program (SAW) program claiming that he worked seven months on a South Carolina farm. There were indications that this claim was fraudulent, namely that Abouhalima was in New York and never worked on a farm. Nevertheless, he received his legal permanent resident alien status (green card).

7 Kansi’s roommate, Zahed Ahmad Mir, was visited by law enforcement authorities after the CIA attack and permitted the police to seize two handguns and magazines for the AK-47 believed to be used by Kansi in the shooting. Mir was later arrested and convicted of fraud for his application for amnesty under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker (SAW) provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This provision permitted illegal aliens who had engaged in seasonal agricultural work for at least 90 days to apply for amnesty and receive legal residence in the United States. Mir falsely asserted on his SAW application that he entered the United States in 1985 and picked “watermelons, cantaloupe and assorted other crops” for a farm in Georgia. See DHS document, immigration file A93 001 385.

12 The petitioner on his behalf, Lee Artis Breedlove, a Florida farm owner, claimed to have employed Abouhalima and others. Breedlove pled guilty in federal court to issuing 260 fraudulent employment records used by aliens in their SAW applications.

Once terrorists had entered the United States, their next challenge was to find a way to remain here. Their primary method was immigration fraud. For example, Yousef and Ajaj concocted bogus political asylum stories when they arrived in the United States. Mahmoud Abouhalima, involved in both the World Trade Center and landmarks plots, received temporary residence under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers (SAW) program, after falsely claiming that he picked beans in Florida.7 Mohammed Salameh, who rented the truck used in the bombing, overstayed his tourist visa. He then applied for permanent residency under the agricultural workers program, but was rejected.8

9/30/87 Abouhalima filed for and received temporary residence under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker (SAW) program claiming to have picked beans in Florida. This program involved 1.3 million applications from aliens claiming to have worked for at least 90 days in agriculture from 1985 to 1986.

262 The SAW applicants had to provide evidence that they had worked on perishable crops for at least “90 days” between May 1, 1985, and May 1, 1986; their residence did not have to be “continuous” or “unlawful.” Nearly 1 million illegal aliens had received legal permanent residence under SAW, twice the number of foreigners normally employed in agriculture.

Hispanics are technically of the white race, if we are getting into race issues. But then, I guess it is really a language issue.

Bilbray offers a solution, the writer just refuses to hear it.

Most Hispanics in the US are mestizos from Mexico, to say nothing of the mulattos from Puto Rico...

Thanks for pointing that out. There is a “white” sector in Mexico. They aren’t the ones coming here.

Hey! He knows which way the wind is blowing!!! And he’s young enough to reap the initial benefits. In his mind,he has a good shot at being Minister of Print Media Commentary or “Southern Region Correspondent” in the Cana-mex-ica state-run News program.

Most "Hispanics", I being one are either mestizo or cholo amerindian. Those are the ones coming here. The european whites are the oligarchies that have for the last 500 years run latin america as fiefdoms doing everything they could to prevent the rise of a middle class and modernization. They don't come here because they leive the high life back home.

CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!

WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them.

STOP AMNESTY NOW!! WE CAN DO IT!!

The best way to stop Shamnesty

Spanish is the language of the cities. If you go hinterland in any country Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, even Argentina you will find that other languages are spoken. In Northwest Argenina it is quechua in the northeast it is guarani. In Mexico outside the capital and acapulco many people are bilingual, speaking spanish the language they learn in school and whatever indian tongue is local. Recently I was on the subway and I heard what sounded distinctly as indian tongues. Sure enough they were south americans, possibly Mexicans.

Of course even the issue of spanish though based on castillian has it's difference. In Buenos Aires where I was born we have Lunfardo and an accent called Rio Platense.

The same day, the Census Bureau reported what many Americans already know: The United States is becoming a Hispanic nation.

Why on earth would I want the US to become an Hispanic nation. Just about all Hispanic nations are failures. And the racist Spanish rulers of Mexico push their brown citizens into the United States. "Hispanic nations" are the last nations I want to emulate

We should emulate the Anglo nations and some of what Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan have to offer.
The objective of a lot of Hispanics is to set up a massive area of Hispanic culture within this Anglo nation. Is America an Anglo nation? Ask a Mexican and see what he says

Would guys like Ruben be smirking if they didn’t also believe a ‘cultural shift’ is coming? One they believe they’ll benefit from?
