Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered in central Paris today to demonstrate against the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy, an AFP journalist said.
The clashes took place on the Place de la Bastille where about 5,000 supporters of the defeated Socialist candidate Segolene Royal had gone to await the election results.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.

>Notice how no one throws a riot when the left wins. I onder why that is. (sarc)<
Right. The Commies are henchthugs, and the Pubbies are gentlepeople.
Actually, Gore at first conceded graciously. Then he got the phone call right away instructing him to retract his concession and claw, bite, and lie his way to victory. The big question is who gave the order. There could well be a connection outside the visible Clinton circle who scared Gore to action.
Liberals always loot, burn, and throw pies when they disagree politically. They can’t tolerate democracy or free speech.
They just can’t believe anyone could possibly disagree with them, because they have such good intentions, and they are so RIGHT about everything! Some conservatives have the same problem.
If these morons were starving there would be less time for rioting.
That said, the thing that strikes me as very wrong about this photo is that the guy hasn't been face-planted with six LEO's boots on his neck and back.
Patently incapablle of being educated, entreated or (ultimately) assimilated.
We'll know France (and this goes for the rest of Europe, as well) is finally getting serious regarding said problem -- genuinely, irrevocably committed to setting things right, once more -- when (and only when) the mass extraditions start.
The rioters were lucky that France no longer has people like Napoleon around. He quelled a riot by firing “a whiff of grapeshot” from a cannon into the crowd.
Expect heads to roll, literally...like the French aid worker held in Afghanistan by the Taliban...odds are his head will be separated from his body tomorrow.
Brave masked warriors. Related to the Pallies by any chance?
Exactly! How come it’s always the liberals who riot when they lose an election ..??
Hmmmm ..?? Interesting ..??
The dirty little secret is that LIBERALS BELIEVE THEY ARE ENTITLED TO RULE. How dare you scalleywags take their positions of power .. don’t you know those positions belong to the liberals ..??
All of socialist Europe is in agreement that the USA must be pared down, by any means possible. Since a military means is out of the question, their best bet is to encourage our national suicide.
How perfect.
But wasn’t that to clear the streets of counter-revolutionaries — that is to say, conservatives?
ya.. 300 isn’t a lot, but the MSM will give them coverage worthy of Event-of-the-Century magnitude
Or maybe he’s just saying something that’s politically smart. Even great leaders need to do this sometimes.
Even if Sarko means every word of it, he’s still much better than the Socialists, and Chirac, on several issues.
In short: Grow up.
Hmm. Where else do they do this? Oh yeah, the middle east, only they use humans.
Not really, they believe it's self determining. Ochlocracy is democratic, it's just not ordered.
Nazis (socialists, anarchists, whatever) are the same regardless of the generation. The only validity in their eyes is them getting what they want. If they don’t, their true nature appears rather quickly.
