Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters gathered in central Paris today to demonstrate against the presidential election victory of right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy, an AFP journalist said.
The clashes took place on the Place de la Bastille where about 5,000 supporters of the defeated Socialist candidate Segolene Royal had gone to await the election results.
Up to 300 rioters, some of whom were masked, made running attacks on riot police who took up positions at the entrance to boulevards leading onto the square.
Earlier a small crowd of protesters, brandishing black and red anarchist flags, set fire to an effigy of Sarkozy in the square before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it.

The Left is so friendly...it is, DO IT my way or we burn the place down....time to break out the tear gas, and guns..read the riot act, immediate dispersement, or be fired on....for me, I have listen long enough to their lopsided politics.....
The middle picture, the one on the right. Is that a girl or a very effeminate-looking boy?
Looks like a girl to me.
Not if it were my car...
In that case, let’s hope that the riot police don’t practice chivalry.
That’s the biggest chit-eating grin I have ever seen on a woman. She’s easily as scary as ‘She Who Shall Not Be Named.’
*SHIVER*
I truly never thought the day would come, but I’m kind of proud of the people of France today.
Now...can we get Americans to step up to the plate come ‘08 and elect a TRUE Conservative to the White House? *Fingers Crossed*
I would think we will see a tough crackdown. They need to put a lid on this rioting right away, it will send the wrong signal if this becomes the first big “event” of the “right-wing” President. Peace through Strength, Sarko!
The rioting arsonists are the same folks who scream about global warming.
“Sarkozy, who won today’s presidential election to succeed Jacques Chirac, said “a great nation like the United States has the duty to not create obstacles in the struggle against global warming”.”
Please, you folks who think this guy is some conservative champion are fooling yourselves. He is just another lefty, just not as left as the other A-hole.
Go pound sand Sarkozy.
The socialists have learned well from their national socialist predicesors.
Sarkozy is trying to avoid looking like an American lackey. Unfortunately, that’s a political necessity in France. His election is still a step in the right direction.
Heh. Kind of like a Gahan Wilson comic I saw once: it shows a long-haired prophet of doom holding a sign that says “The World Is Coming To An End.” He has his hands on a dynamite plunger trigger, and is getting ready to push it down. Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy!
I can't think of a better endorsement.
"Quite the contrary, it should take the lead in this battle because what is at stake is all of humanity," said the right-winger, who won 53 per cent of the vote, according to projections.
"France will make this battle it's first battle," he said.
Disgusting that their first battle is an environmental on, instead of one against the enemies of the Free West. The French will likely change their battle flag to a dingy gray since the pure white flags cause too much pollution.
Viva la France!
In france they have conditioned the mob to believe that rioting is as valid as voting.
Let the car-b-que begin! Peugeot, extra crispy, please.
A Leftist never loses a “legitimate” election.
Their definition of a “legitimate” election is one where they win, no matter how much they had to lie, cheat, steal, and intimidate for votes, provided Jimmah Catarrh certifies it.
I guess we will see shortly if Sarkozy has the spine to back up his tough talk with action.
I’ll have the Autoflambe to start and just let the chef
surprize me.
