IMO, GOP has some really good prospects out there, several of whom should keep the Bob Beckel's awake at night. If their best shot is HRC, the GOP will have to foul up big time in 08 not to hold the WH
"...Fred Thompson run would be [their} worst nightmare"... and they'll be crying and shrieking in terror all their way to the White House.
Very strange for a Democrat strategist to say a Republican is their worst nightmare. They must want him to run.
Make that nightmare come true Fred.
I would LOVE it if Fred Thompson declares he's running!
May be a pretty good deal, if Beckel's spewing in advance of Fred's appearance tomorrow am with Chris Wallace. I will be glued.
President Thompson...nice ring to it.
I wish I knew more about him...
I'd still like to tempt Haley Barbour. He'd drive the 'rats zonkers, like he did when he was in charge of the RNC.
I remember when Fred Thompson broadcast the Republican response to a Clinton speach in 1985 not long after Republicans took over Congress. I thought he looked much more presidential than Clinton.
Yeah, the Democrats had been hoping for a Giuliani nomination, so they could unload both barrels on him. Thompson will give them nightmares, all right.
Of all the outside possibilities, he looks likeliest to me. I don't see any of the other "conservative" candidates getting nominated or elected this time around, although we'd better start grooming some of them for the future.
My Right to Life mailings have been pushing Brownback, but I'm afraid he's a loser, who lost all his credibility when he joined the Democrats in bashing Bush over the war.
Rudy Giuliani is the most impressive candidate out there, but the religious and social issues are a very difficult problem unless he comes around. And I'm not sure that he will.

Former Senate Republican leader Howard Baker said Friday he is urging his friend Fred Thompson, a TV actor and former U.S. senator, to run for president and is encouraging others to draft him.
Baker, in a telephone interview, said: "I'm planting the seed that he might run or might be convinced to run." ....
Baker said he has talked to Thompson about running for president. "He doesn't confirm that he's interested and he also doesn't tell me to stop," Baker said.
Thompson could not be reached for comment. Fox News has announced he will answer questions on its Sunday program with Chris Wallace.
Good! Nightmares for Dems are good things.
Bob Beckel does not tell the truth, ever.
Was Fred Thompson ever identified as one of those members of Congress whose FBI folder fell into the hands of the Hillary and Bill Clinton?

If the ticket was Thompson/Huckabee, I think it would be a winner.
If he is good friends with Senator McCain, I doubt he will run against him. However, looking at his record I think he is what the party needs to win. He is conservative moderate - which is what tends to win things.
He is socially conservative enough to please the religious right, but not so strongly as to offend others. He is just about the right favor on economic issues to hit the middle also. He really would be a formidable candidate. Plus, is just plain looks and sounds presidential. Face recognition alone will get him many votes.
BTTT
Given that, the purpose of his comment may have been merely to stir the pot on the Republican side. He may have infighting and competition for campaign dollars in mind. He certainly doesn't have in mind encouraging the Republicans to nominate their best candidate in terms of winning the election.
IMHO.
