The disappearance and possible defection of former Iranian deputy defense minister Ali Reza Asgari has the Iranian government deeply worried — and for good reason.

Meir Javedanfar, an expert on Iran and co-author of an upcoming book on Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, reports.

UPDATE: A senior U.S. official (has confirmed) that Asgari left his country voluntarily and is cooperating with Western intelligence agencies, providing information on Hezbollah and Iran’s ties to the organization. (Washington Post)

The recent disappearance of Ali Reza Asgari, Iran’s former deputy defense minister who was on a visit to Istanbul has been a mystery for the past several days.

Now a report by the Arabic newspaper Al Sharq Al Wasat says that Asgari defected to the US after arriving in Istanbul from Damascus on February 7th.

[snip] UPDATE @ 10:42 EST: “The Iranian former deputy defense minister who disappeared in neighboring Turkey last month is being questioned in a northern European country under strict supervision…. Ali Reza Asghari is undergoing thorough investigation by intelligence forces before being transferred to the United States.” (Haaretz )

Who confirmed this? Another unnamed official? Not that I doubt it, I'm just curious.

The link is bad. Also, where did Wasat get this information? I'm a little confused about that. The media isn't even trying for independent confirmation. As leaky as our intelligence services are, that's surprising. 'Course it's not surprising if you figure there's no need to leak anything that might make the administration look GOOD. Though I hope it's true, I'll take it with a grain of salt.

I hope that guy can pinpoint the locations of Iran's underground nuke facilities close enough for our B-2s to take them out, or if not our planes the Israeli's. If they're not taken out by someone soon, I believe there will be nuclear strikes on Israel and American cities within the next few years if Iran can buy the rockets and guidance technology to do it.

Iran's religious nutjob rulers don't care if they and all Iranians are killed in retaliation because of their idiotic, suicidal Islamic religion. The only way to effectively fight kamakazi attacks is to stop them before they get started.

Whoa! This is an important article to look at!

If he's talking willingly, and can be securely protected, the information he apparently is privy to may include nearly all the most important items of Iran's security. This might even break as much top secret information about Iran as the NYSlimes and the other FRAUDcasters give our enemies each month. That would help level the playing field a little.

Your link to Ha'aretz doesn't work. You provide no link to the Washington Post article. Are you sure there's any substance to your post?
