Michelle Malkin writes:
Ann Coulter just finished her riff on Al Gore, tossed out some cute jokes ("You can understand why Hollywood is concerned about global warming. You know what heat does to plastic."), and ended with a cheap one-liner about John Edwards being a "faggot." (Paraphrasing) She said she would refrain from commenting on Edwards because "if you say faggot, you have to go to rehab."
A smattering of laughter.
Not from this corner.
Crickets chirping.
Flashback Last year's bomb about "ragheads."
Bryan at Malkin's Hot Air:
Im no fan of John Edwards, but thats just a stupid joke. Its over the line. The laughter it generated across the room was more than a little annoying.
Last year it was raghead. This year its calling John Edwards a faggot. Two years in a row, Coulter has finished up an otherwise sharp CPAC routine with an obnoxious slur that liberals will fling at conservatives for years to come.
Thanks, Ann.
The Captain of Captain's Quarters opined
Yeah, that's just what CPAC needs -- an association with homophobia. Nice work, Ann.
At some point, Republicans will need to get over their issues with homosexuality. Regardless of whether one believes it to be a choice or a hardwired response, it has little impact on anyone but the gay or lesbian person. We can argue that homosexuality doesn't require legal protection, but not when we have our front-line activists referring to them as "faggots" or worse. That indicates a disturbing level of animosity rather than a true desire to allow people the same rights and protections regardless of their lifestyles.
Ann Coulter can be an entertaining and incisive wit. Unfortunately, she can also be a loose cannon, and CPAC might want to consider that the next time around.
Mary Katharine Ham of Townhall.com's one-liner
You shouldn't have to go to psych eval for using it, but it's a nasty word. Just don't.
Sean Hackbarth of The American Mind:
Ann Coulter almost made it through her CPAC speech without looking like a complete buffoon. She wasnt funny, she rarely is, but shes an attention whore. Near the end of her speech she said she wouldnt talk about John Edwards because you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot. Shes now on non-speaking terms with any gay and lesbian friends.
"Are these bloggers right in criticizing Ann Coulter, or is it a case of being over-sensitive because of the expected criticism from the Left?"
These "bloggers" are self-promoters who are largely in it for the money.
Coulter was a conservative long before it meant quick cash.
She also has a sense of humor, which is another big difference.
Unfortunately for these and other knee-jerkers, when the tape is seen, it will be clear that it was a joke.
The joke was you can't use certain words without being threatened with re-hab.
These worthies don't seem to have the attention span to put her words into that context.
It's why they are so often wrong on so many other subjects.
They just aren't too smart. They certainly have no sense of humor.
They are too busy trying to make a buck, I guess. All they have time to do is knee-jerk.
Here is my contribution to the ongoing North Carolina Forum discussion on this subject:
Whether John Edwards is homosexual is irrelevant; he's such a slimy, socialist, ambulance-chasing, dirt-eating hypocrite that being homosexual would be an improvement. But that's neither here nor there. The response demonstrates that it's now off limits to show anything but reverence toward homosexuals, which is exactly the point Ann Coulter was making, in her uniquely-Ann way.
The other commentators are huffing and fluffing over her use of "faggot," but that's just a distraction. Suppose I had stood up at CPAC - in my long dress, sensible shoes, and church-lady hat - and said, "Men who experience a desire for sex with other men are mentally ill. I feel a great pity for them, and I hope they seek psychiatric and spiritual help. Homosexual behavior is morally wrong, and also disgusting. The average homosexual man has anal intercourse with more men in one year than I've shaken hands with in 40 years. I do not want men who are sexually attracted to boys go to near my sons at any time." I didn't use a single "slur," nor particularly graphic language, but you can bet I would be excoriated for this, just as Ann Coulter is for her decision to raise the issue with rather tacky humor.
I just finished Star Parker's most recent book, "White Ghetto," in which she points out that behavior that was universally considered grotesque and immoral only a generation ago is now publicly celebrated - to the point that we have a cross-dressing Republican Presidential candidate - and nobody is allowed to mention this! Although it pains me to say this, we got in this situation by being TOO NICE. Maybe I'm a coward for being grateful that Ann Coulter has the nerve to be outrageously frank on my behalf :-).
As I said, just plain stupid. I take into account the ugliness of the word but moreso the chosen venue. Childish behaviour like hers may make some here feel good but it taints the entire CPAC or at least gives our enemies a brush to paint us all with.
Great post! I have to say, I admire women who actually dress in a feminine manner. Vive la difference!
Please FReepmail me if you would like to be added to, or removed from, the Michelle Malkin ping list...
I'm beginning to think that Anne Coulter craves attention.
Considering many of the statements written and spoken about the right I think the PC left is being over sensitive.
Ya think? When she drops out of the limelight, an outrageous comment puts her right back in there. [I'm just tired of her routine. She's so intelligent. She can do better.]
Was that "F" word followed by the word "me?"
If so , many of us should have been there and missed our chance! LOL
Anne by the way, is simply glorious. And if she lapses into the words of a sailor, you can bet that its because she has to run with the good old boy pols who are around her in the political mix. She likes to be one of them, and in fact is.
Yup. Its true, and has been for years. Why do you think so many of us pay attention to her?
Thank you. I claim to have originated the phrase "fundamentalist frump FReep frock," and I wear them to annoy my grunge-dressed teenager, who has all the diplomatic charm of Ann Coulter.
SF,
Your 2 points may be true, however Ann has not become a messenger of wit, kind of a Peggy Noonan on Steroid's, but a point woman in a battle that maybe we can't win, while we may get what she is doing we are all getting bloodied. The point being is with her brain could she slice and dice them more artfully?
Yes I remember that too. Ann's never at a loss for words!
And I thought gay meant happy.
Truly that was a tasteless word for Ann to use concerning John Edwards, and not very "politically correct". Shouldn't she have used maybe a better vocabulary, maybe the word gay, or homosexual?
PC CPAC jumps on AC.
She crossed the line. It is a bad habit of hers. They are probably right - in that she craves attention - but it shows a lack of character, nonetheless.
