Conservatives target Rudy
Newsday ^ | Feb 8 2007 | CRAIG GORDON

WASHINGTON -- Eager to head off Rudolph Giuliani's recent gains in the polls, conservative activists this week strengthened their attacks, with some promising to step up their efforts on the Internet, talk radio and "below-the-radar" to discredit him going forward.

They are taking direct aim at one of Giuliani's strongest selling points, at least to some backers -- that he is the Republicans' best hope of stopping Hillary Rodham Clinton.

These critics argue that his nomination would prompt a conservative third-party candidate to join the race and split the GOP vote, clearing the way for Clinton's election.

"There's no way conservatives could stand for Giuliani becoming the Republican nominee," said Richard Viguerie, one of the founders of the modern conservative movement. "I guarantee whoever the Democrats nominate would be the next president."

~ship~

He backed off his earlier opposition to a ban on the medical procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, and expressed support for gun owners' Second Amendment rights, even though as New York mayor he sued gun manufacturers and argued that more guns lead to more crime.

~snip~

So social conservatives -- for whom Giuliani's support for abortion rights, gun control and gay unions are anathema -- are speaking out. Some say they would use the tools at their disposal to tell voters about Giuliani's social stances.

Viguerie, a direct-mail pioneer, argued it no longer takes millions of mailings to make the case, thanks to talk radio, the Internet and other "below-the-radar" media.

Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, told a conservative radio host that Giuliani's positions are "far outside the mainstream of conservative thought ... Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

Might as well be here. I've been called everything FR has put up with.

We'll just see, at the grassroots, how serious the Bashers are. My guess is Keyboard Warriors, at best.

Meanwhile, we do the lifting.

I almost NEVER imbibe alcoholic beverages and I'm drinking water.

It's both quite late and very cold here as well, but I have the heat on. :-)

"Conservatives don't have to target Rudy, he's an idiot who has targeted himself with his past actions."

Yours is the most accurate post in this thread, IMHO. Rudy has targeted himself with past decisions in both his political and personal life. His supporters are convinced that if conservatives stop bringing up his missteps, a Democratic opponent won't bring them up either. It's his Achilles tendon, and conservatives didn't make it vulnerable, Rudy did.

You are dreaming. You completely underestimate the libs. They have all the fraud. We got clobbered across the board last November in the red states too, places like Missouri and Virginia. In presidential races, we don't have a lock on that many states outside the plains and the deep south, and you propose ticking off the ONLY dependable GOP region, the south, by nominating a gun grabbing, pro-abortion, gay marriage loving swinger.

Now that's brilliant. I don't understand people who think we need two political parties full of liberals and only one view on every single issue.

>>>>>The GOP is NOT and NEVER has been THE Conservative Party.

Since 1980, the GOP has been the "Conservative Party" in American politics. Just as the Democratic Party is considered the "Liberal Party" in American politics. In order for the GOP to win elections it can't ignore its base of conservatives. Specifically, social conservatives. What happened on Nov7th 2006 was the GOP leadership ignoring its base of conservative voters, and paying a high price for it.

What ...do you want to make the same mistake twice?

Rove depended on the base until it did not work anymore.

I don't know what difference it makes, but I've been a political junkie for many years. Yes I have done all those things you mentioned on behalf of candidates. I have never run for anything, myself. I have become a more passionate advocate for the unborn the older I get.

I dislike government, all it's regulations, excessive taxation, and what I call buttinski-ism such as anti smoking nazis, gun control freaks, global warming idiots, etc.

Is that good enough for you? Can I stay?

Many who lost in November were conservatives. The Dems ran "moderates" in the more conservative districts and states. They learned how to get beyond the control of the far-left factions of their party for that one election.

Rove screwed the base for six years, and it finally caught up with him.

What I see you post are cheap pot shots at the Reagan legacy, and you do this for two main reasons. 1. To make Bush look better, and 2. To make Rudy look better. Thats not the way to help out your guys. Both Dubya and Rudy would tell you so.

No, Rudy could NOT run as a Dem, "comfortably" or otherwise.

Please tell which Dem, today, is for tax cuts, cutting the size of government, doing away with minority and female set asides, affirmative action, getting people off welfare, closing open enrollment in colleges, vouchers, charter school, and whole heartedly fighting the WOT; not to mention doing something other than giving away the store to Iran, N.Korea, Syria, and any other damned place like that?

BTW, Rudy also calls a spade a spade and calls the Islamonazis MUSLIN TERRORISTS.

There's a whole lot more, but I doubt that actual facts mean much to you.
