WASHINGTON -- Eager to head off Rudolph Giuliani's recent gains in the polls, conservative activists this week strengthened their attacks, with some promising to step up their efforts on the Internet, talk radio and "below-the-radar" to discredit him going forward.
They are taking direct aim at one of Giuliani's strongest selling points, at least to some backers -- that he is the Republicans' best hope of stopping Hillary Rodham Clinton.
These critics argue that his nomination would prompt a conservative third-party candidate to join the race and split the GOP vote, clearing the way for Clinton's election.
"There's no way conservatives could stand for Giuliani becoming the Republican nominee," said Richard Viguerie, one of the founders of the modern conservative movement. "I guarantee whoever the Democrats nominate would be the next president."

He backed off his earlier opposition to a ban on the medical procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, and expressed support for gun owners' Second Amendment rights, even though as New York mayor he sued gun manufacturers and argued that more guns lead to more crime.

So social conservatives -- for whom Giuliani's support for abortion rights, gun control and gay unions are anathema -- are speaking out. Some say they would use the tools at their disposal to tell voters about Giuliani's social stances.
Viguerie, a direct-mail pioneer, argued it no longer takes millions of mailings to make the case, thanks to talk radio, the Internet and other "below-the-radar" media.
Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, told a conservative radio host that Giuliani's positions are "far outside the mainstream of conservative thought ... Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

Reagan didn't create the slogan, 11th commandment, and he didn't follow it in 1976 either. My screen name honors Reagan. That's it. Why you see fit to attack it in this manner is bizarre and uncalled for.

You are absolutely right, but I wouldn't hold your breath. So far we haven't even been able to stop that partial birth murder thing. I'd pray for God's mercy, but He's already shown us far, far more than we deserve.
As for Rudy, he's pro-choice, pro-gay, and unwilling or unable to keep his vows to his spouse(s). That says a lot about the man's character, as opposed to a bunch of 9-11 photo ops.

I bet you'll get a bigger swing of voters towards the Conservative rather than the moderate. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the Conservative vote were solid along the Coastal and North Eastern states. In my opinion, Republican voters are done with warbling media-star Republicans. It's getting more difficult for the moderate Republican to pass the smell test.

We are the largest city with a Republican Mayor.

This has become such a hostile atmosphere...E.V.and others overtly attack us. Why can't we just keep to the issues, not call others childish names?
You see, as a Conservative American, I have made up my mind.
If Rudy and Hillary are both nominated (assuming opposing tickets), I am definitely not going to sit at home.
I am going to get off my butt, get out there, and vote against both of them.

Do you even read posts before responding? I mean, seriously...where did I say the candidate has to be conservative? You are most adept at beating down straw men.
I simply stated the candidate, IMO, must have broad appeal to the base (that includes moderates, or anyone else who consistently votes Republican). A staunch conservative isn't going to cut it any more than a moderate (liberal) guy like Rudy. Compromise doesn't mean you always get the guy you want while the rest of us suck it up, you know.
America does NOT have a populace that is mostly Conservative.
In order to win elections, a candidate MUST appeal to more than just its base and I've got news for you, YOU are NOT the entire "base" of the GOP.
