Feb. 12, 2007 issue - Enough already. It is time to call some bluffs. John Kerry says that one reason America has become an "international pariah" is President Bush's decision to "walk away from global warming." Kerry's accusation is opaque, but it implies the usual complaint that Bush is insufficiently enthusiastic about the Kyoto Protocol's binding caps on emissions of greenhouse gases. Many senators and other experts in climate science say we must "do something" about global warming. Barack Obama says "the world" is watching to see "what action we take."

Kyoto was rejected by the entire US Senate, Democrat and Republican, because it did not hold China and other developing nations at all accountable for the "warming".

I've spent some time looking at the numbers and political consensus or no, the data doesn't point to any clear conclusions about global temperatures let alone to cause. We don't dare empower government to slash 5% from global GDP in order to meet the goals of Kyoto like legislation without A GREAT DEAL more evidence.

That 5% by the way will no doubt be a great hardship to many as 21st century countries are forced to roll back the clock on energy consumption, but the people it will REALLY hurt will be the poor.

Al and Barbara will still be able to afford private jets, (and will have the political pull to get the necessary permits) but regular folk won't be allowed to drive their tractors anymore.

I've made the personal decision to no longer patronize any business or manufacturer who announces their plans to plans to cut CO2 emissions to "combat global warming". It is a marketing strategy to increase their share, which under normal circumstances, is fine and dandy. But, the role that such a thing plays in perpetuating this myth, this "public religion", is unacceptable to me.

Fine. President Bush should give the world something amusing to watch. He should demand that the Senate vote on the protocol.

In 1997, when the Kyoto Protocol's essential provisions were known, a "sense of the Senate" resolution declared opposition to any agreement that would do what the protocol aims to do. The Senate warned against any agreement that would require significant reductions of greenhouse-gas emissions in the United States and other developed nations without mandating "specific scheduled commitments" on the part of the 129 "developing" countries, which include China, India, Brazil and South Korea—the second, fourth, 10th and 11th largest economies.

President Clinton and his earnest vice president knew better than to seek ratification of Kyoto by a Senate that had passed its resolution of disapproval 95-0. Fifty-six of those 95 senators are still serving. Two of them are John Kerry and Barbara Boxer. That is an inconvenient truth.

That fact alone raises my suspicions that the Kyoto Protocol was an idea hatched in the Chinese Politburo.

Kyoto will never pass in this country for the simple reason that the bulk of our future oil needs will be coming from the Canadian oil sands, and its extraction involves producing high levels of CO2. This is also the impetus for President Bush's pushing for some sort of North American Union, to preclude Canadian environmentalists from pushing thru legislation that might thwart development of this resource. The estimated oil available from these tar sands is equivalent to estimated Saudi reserves, there is no way in hell we are ever going to sign on to any environmental accord that will prevent us from developing this resource. Case closed.

Will has a good point. I like his idea about forcing the entire Senate to vote on accepting or rejecting the Kyoto accords. Why should he be blamed for screwing up a great economy to pacify the whims of an ignorant Senate?

How far we have come. Once, the Senate was run by wise and thoughtful people. Today, it represents the worst that our great country has to offer.

The Founding Fathers must have rolled over in their graves so often that there is little left of their remains but toothpicks.
