AUSTIN - Nationally syndicated columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her recurring battle with breast cancer.
"I think she's tough as a metal boot," her brother, Andy Ivins, said Friday after a visit with her at Seton Medical Center in Austin.
Andy Ivins said his sister was admitted to Seton on Thursday. She spent Friday morning with longtime colleagues and friends, and was "sleeping peacefully" when he arrived later in the day.
A self-described leftist agitator, Ivins, 62, completed a round of radiation treatment in August, but the cancer "came back with a vengeance," and has spread through her body, Andy Ivins said.
Ivins' columns, which she infuses with passion and wit, appear in more than 300 newspapers around the country. She's written six books, four of which were best sellers.
They included Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America, which she wrote with longtime friend Lou Dubose; and Who Let the Dogs In? Incredible Political Animals I Have Known.
Ivins was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. A year later, she described her treatment with characteristic wit: "First they poison you; then they mutilate you; then they burn you. I've had more fun."
She received her third diagnosis a year ago; despite her illness, she's managed to crank out her columns.
In a piece earlier this month, she wrote that she was starting a newspaper crusade to end the war in Iraq.
"Raise hell," she urged readers. "Think of something ridiculous to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!' "
The difference between Saddam and Molly is only that she's never had the power Saddam had. Their hearts are/were in the same place.
Hopefully President GWB sends her a get well card wishing her the best. It will send her over the edge a lot faster. :)
Your sardonic retort doesn't change the fact that it is people on the Right who most frequently wave their religious beliefs around like some kind of merit badge asserting how special they are, while at the same time displaying precisely the kind of ugliness they disparage in their political opponents.
To put it bluntly, Leftists may be vicious in their commentary, but they are less hypocritical than those who supposedly love Christ, but ignore His lessons of compassion, love for our fellow human beings, and humility.
As for me being "moralistic," hardly. You have entirely missed the fact that I am anything but moralistic, but rather am just a jaded, bewildered soul struggling through life like everyone else, hoping against hope that there really is something better on the other side.
No doubt that post will earn you quite a bit of vitriol, but the proof of its accuracy is all over this thread.
I'm used to the vitriol, and am in pretty good company. :)
Let me explain something. To a devout liberal, government is their religion. They view their political idols in greater terms than their Hollywood idols. I've yet to find one liberal who is spiritual. If they're religious, it's for business purposes, political purposes or Pacal's Wager purposes.
That's why I'm asking.
Molly Ivens would not hesitate to say the same about you, and for sure George Bush.
Justifying bad judgment, by relying on bad judgment by another.
In large part, that's because many on both sides of the debate see the opposing view as pure evil. I have friends and family who are liberals, and while I think they're misguided, I also know that they're well-intentioned people. Many here would tell me I should ostracize them, as they're working for Al Qaeda or murdering babies. I think it's those thought processes that lead to the hateful, cruel rhetoric you see posted here. It's also what leads people to condemn any view that opposes the GOP proposals here on this site.
I wonder if repressed anger and resentment at being badly treated by a spouse can also contribute to getting cancer - I saw it in my mother, and also my brother. They both were very mild-mannered and pleasant on the surface, but considering the marriage partners they were both burdened with, I can't help but think they were both very angry.
Has anyone else noticed that we who claim to be above that, are getting our asses kicked by those who proudly reside in the slime below that?
I think the discourse here is 20% of the hatred that you see on Democratic Underground. Here you find good people. But at DU, I've only seen ONE!
The hatred, conceit, selective perceptions and flat-out mean comments make it hard to stop comparing the DUmmies to the socialists in Europe who killed so many people.
I wish they would have more debate. But HATRED is their foundation....not logic, not the constitution.
I live 5 minutes from Seton.. Should I pay her a visit?
Sorry for her cancer.
Let's hope her mind loses its hatred, envy, jealousy, and corruption before she faces her final Judge.
Good phrasing.
I just pray for Our Lord's Perfect Will in her life.
To put it bluntly, Leftists may be vicious in their commentary, but they are less hypocritical than those who supposedly love Christ, but ignore His lessons of compassion, love for our fellow human beings, and humility.
Jesus said" I came not to bring peace, but a sword. As the world hates me so they will hate you".
So I guess W. has to expect what Ivins writes. Bush indeed is a Christian and would not respond as many here have.
The line was Alice Roosevelt Longworth's. Teddy Roosevelt's daughter.
Although He is very patient, eventually God removes His protection from the righteous and the unrepentant alike and allows the ravages of a fallen world to overtake the flesh. Indeed it seems we all must suffer this fate. May she find comfort in her last days and a merciful reception into Forever.
My only comment having no respect for her is that let the Lord's will be done and hopefully for her sake she will repent of her sins before the end. Wish her well. Amen.
