Molly Ivins cancer 'back with a vengeance'
Houston Chronicle ^ | Jan. 26, 2007 | LISA SANDBERG

AUSTIN - Nationally syndicated columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her recurring battle with breast cancer.

"I think she's tough as a metal boot," her brother, Andy Ivins, said Friday after a visit with her at Seton Medical Center in Austin.

Andy Ivins said his sister was admitted to Seton on Thursday. She spent Friday morning with longtime colleagues and friends, and was "sleeping peacefully" when he arrived later in the day.

A self-described leftist agitator, Ivins, 62, completed a round of radiation treatment in August, but the cancer "came back with a vengeance," and has spread through her body, Andy Ivins said.

Ivins' columns, which she infuses with passion and wit, appear in more than 300 newspapers around the country. She's written six books, four of which were best sellers.

They included Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America, which she wrote with longtime friend Lou Dubose; and Who Let the Dogs In? Incredible Political Animals I Have Known.

Ivins was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. A year later, she described her treatment with characteristic wit: "First they poison you; then they mutilate you; then they burn you. I've had more fun."

She received her third diagnosis a year ago; despite her illness, she's managed to crank out her columns.

In a piece earlier this month, she wrote that she was starting a newspaper crusade to end the war in Iraq.

"Raise hell," she urged readers. "Think of something ridiculous to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!' "

Ol' Molly has done great harm to this country and spit on the graves of men who has given their all. Just hurry up and go away.

I can't stand the woman, but I pray for peace for her in her suffering. I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy.

I wasn't suggesting what I think. I was wondering what SHE thinks.

I'm going to bow out of this thread.

sw Since it isn't going to be deleted, moving it to the Smokey Backroom would probably be a good idea..

As a BC survivor, (so far) I can say that Molly, in spite of my disrespect for her venomous politic opinions, is at this moment..a "sister" who is fighting breast cancer.

I lost my beloved Mother-in-law to breast cancer, and I agree. I hope she finds the peace that passes understanding.

I am appalled and embarrassed these hateful comments are not deleted.

Although I sympathize with your view, I don't know why anyone should be surprised by what they see here. The cold, mean cruelty you see here is common fare on FR and other political forums, on both the Left and Right side of the political divide.

The only difference I see between the two sides that that, more often on the Right, people like to trumpet their Christian morés with a sanctimony that would choke a herd of horses.

When someone has spent their life demeaning, villifying, and attempting to destroy the nation and institutions dear to me,it is extremely difficult to feel sympathy for that someone.

You hit the nail right on the head!

Nearly 10 years after I first discovered FR, I feel more and more alienated from this forum. The only reason I still hang around at all is because of a very small number of good people like you, Howlin. I don't know you personally, and yet it has been a privilege to "know" you through FR.

How the hell do you know that was a disgusting thing to say? The poster could agree with every thing Molly Ivins has ever thought, said or wrote and thought what she deserved was a mansion in Heaven.

Just what type of replies and comments would you expect on a conservative forum when a thread is about a terminally ill, hateful, lefty columnist?

The majority of replies wishing her well are insincere, phony, and empty, IMO.

This one and so many others.

...and suggesting it be moved to the Smokey Back Room doesn't cover-up that truth.

Politics is nasty business. Especially today, when the health and security of our nation is at stake.

No they're NOT Patriot.

The fact that Molly has not defeated her Breast Cancer is a loss for all the woman out there who are battling it. It's a reminder that Breast Cancer kills. It's a sort of a barometer, if you will.

Now, for the last time...I'm off this ugly thread.

"Politics is not a fight between Manichean forces of good and evil."

Are you related to Lincoln Chaffee, Olympia Snowe or Arlen Specter?

People like you are the reason Republicans are once again in the minority. And deserve to be, because they don't know how to play political hardball.
