AUSTIN - Nationally syndicated columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her recurring battle with breast cancer.
"I think she's tough as a metal boot," her brother, Andy Ivins, said Friday after a visit with her at Seton Medical Center in Austin.
Andy Ivins said his sister was admitted to Seton on Thursday. She spent Friday morning with longtime colleagues and friends, and was "sleeping peacefully" when he arrived later in the day.
A self-described leftist agitator, Ivins, 62, completed a round of radiation treatment in August, but the cancer "came back with a vengeance," and has spread through her body, Andy Ivins said.
Ivins' columns, which she infuses with passion and wit, appear in more than 300 newspapers around the country. She's written six books, four of which were best sellers.
They included Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America, which she wrote with longtime friend Lou Dubose; and Who Let the Dogs In? Incredible Political Animals I Have Known.
Ivins was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. A year later, she described her treatment with characteristic wit: "First they poison you; then they mutilate you; then they burn you. I've had more fun."
She received her third diagnosis a year ago; despite her illness, she's managed to crank out her columns.
In a piece earlier this month, she wrote that she was starting a newspaper crusade to end the war in Iraq.
"Raise hell," she urged readers. "Think of something ridiculous to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!' "
She has repeatedly made it obvious she wishes death on W.
The difference between them is W is probably praying for her and she prays for his death.
Then what is the point of posting on this thread?
I almost feel sorry for the cancer itself. Having to spread throughout her must be unbearable even for cancer.
To comment.
I'm pretty sure I'd rather die than live in a world Hillary! controls.
Wow!!! Are you really serious? This person with a life, family, and friends is worse than the cancer that ravages her body.
Don't ever feel sorry for cancer! You truly have misspelled your forum moniker....
Moniker means name or nickname for people like you in Rio Linda!
They would both keel over with heart attacks. ;^)
Ms Ivins' soul was eaten up with her very personal hatred of the Bush family long before the cancer began. That's another subject.
Mine are still alive. They are not happy with the current situation.
At this point they feel that they should be in their twilight years, not in the Twilight Zone...
For heaven's sake no I don't think that Molly Ivins is experiencing breast cancer because she's liberal. How insane would that be? Cancer is indifferent. Her recovery or lack thereof could be determined by her attitude about whether or not she thinks life's worth living.
I'm with your sentiments.
It's clear from the article that she is dying. So are we all, although most of us don't yet have a disease or condition that makes death imminent -- at least not insofar as we know.
Ms. Ivins has been a political opponent, and a particularly strident one. However, there is far more to life than politics, and death sure as heck doesn't give a damn what politics we practice.
So I hope Ms. Irvins' final time on earth is peaceful, as pain-free as the docs can make her, and filled with the love of those closest to her.
Amen!
Is Mollie religious? Does anybody know?
This is a case where people should say NOTHING AT ALL, if they can't be compassionate. I am appalled and embarrassed these hateful comments are not deleted.
As a BC survivor, (so far) I can say that Molly, in spite of my disrespect for her venomous politic opinions, is at this moment..a "sister" who is fighting breast cancer.
God Bless Her.. sw
She is a member of the Church of the Lib
I haven't got a clue, nor would it make the slightest difference to me.
I think it's just to say something nasty about her, which, in my mind, at least, is a pretty sick thing to do.
What you said.
