Is Rudy Likely to Be a Favorite or a Flop?
Real Clear Politics ^ | January 16 2007 | Stuart Rothenberg

Today's deepest division is between those political observers who believe that Rudy Giuliani is a credible contender for the Republican presidential nomination and those who think that his chances are no better than those of California Rep. Duncan Hunter.

~snip~

Giuliani's strong showing in GOP polling reflects his celebrity status and the reputation he earned after the terrorist attacks. But if and when he becomes a candidate, that will change. He will be evaluated on the basis of different things, including his past and current positions and behavior, and he'll be attacked by critics and opponents. A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.

So, the former mayor might make a terrific general election candidate, but I don't see how he can get there as a Republican.

Dear Kuksool,

"Actually when resonable abortion restrictions are enforced (parent consent, 24 waiting period), the abortion rate does go down."

Well, that's one theory. I agree with it (although the only "reasonable" restriction on abortion in my view is to ban it).

Imagine how much more abortion rates will decline after Roe is overturned, and many states restrict abortion even more.

They could sit at home and get the same thing with a democrat winning.

What's more important to you...our Country's security, reasonable people on the Supreme court, or two men marrying, which is something the President has nothing to do with? Tell me.

The implication here is that Rudy is a de facto Democrat, which is why I've never been able to understand all the adulation he's gotten here on FreeRepublic.

You're right but he's a liberal Republican, not a liberal Democrat. The reason I'm so opposed to the 'rats is because they no longer honor America. They hate the country, they deny that America is an exceptional country and that we were WELL Founded. They see America as the focus of evil in the modern world...whether it's by design or naivete...and they want to change our society, governemnrt and culture.

Republicans...even most liberal Republicans see America as the indispensible nation. They believe in American exceptionalism and know that our involvemnet in the world, however misguided at times, is NEVER done for evil. Folks around here know that Rudy...despite his cultural liberalism, is still a patriot and for that reason they overlook his extreme liberal views.

That's my two cents anyway.

Ah yes, the cry of the unappeasable Right.

When the options have been "would you rather be kicked or punched" long enough, you start saying "um, neither please!"

When abortion resonable restrictions are enforced, the general public of that state becomes sympathetic to even more restrictions. This is kinda like the Left's war on guns and smoking. The Left won't admit publicly to banning these things. So they'll put all kinds of restrictions on them. We must use the same tactics for abortion.

My 'PSYCHO' designation was given to me by my old military unit when I stationed in RVN. It is a name I am deeply proud of. You would probably lack the understanding of why that is, so I won't go into any further detail.

If you are offended by my definition of insanity, it is simply a fact that the most radical element of the conservative movement keep insisting that 'All or none" will save this country from ruin.

I believe the opposite is true.

A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.

This will absolutely happen. The Democrats and MSM will make sure of it.

For this reason alone, Rudy needs to be discarded as a serious contender.

And if those were your only options, I'd agree with you.

Newt and HRC also were members of a bipartisan committee to improve America's national security.

You understand she was only this committee to spice up her resume for a presidential run, don't you?

Why would any social conservative vote for Giuliani? They could sit at home and get the same thing with a democrat winning.

Ouch. You CAN'T mean that. Are you aware of the WOT? Do you realize that a democrat, ANY democrat would make this country weaker in that WOT? Please reconsider.

Something to keep in mind here is that that most "front-runners" are U.S. Senators (Clinton, McCain, Obama, etc.) and people who are out of politics at this point (Gingrich, Edwards, Giuliani).

There's a reason for this. U.S. Senators get a lot of press time because it's easy for lazy people in the media to cover them without much effort (they're always in Washington D.C.). The people out of politics get a lot of press time because they are professional "talking heads" for the most part who don't have to work a real job to earn a living -- and therefore get a lot of self-promoted face time.

Romney is one glaring exception to this, which makes me think he's probably got a better chance of getting the GOP nomination than the others.

They will never become illegal

Maybe not?, but in my view it is because not enough of those claiming to love God, don't vote accordingly. We will be held accountable, and I want to be found faithful. I believe the "Church" will be judged first for something they did not do. They had the power, (vote) to stop it, but were too busy, or too caught up in the lies of this world.

Dear PSYCHO-FREEP,

"My 'PSYCHO' designation was given to me by my old military unit when I stationed in RVN. It is a name I am deeply proud of. You would probably lack the understanding of why that is, so I won't go into any further detail."

LOL! Yes, that's the ticket. Insult and condescend to your interlocutor. I was joshin' ya, PSYCHO-FREEP. I hope you can see the humor in a poster with the screen name of "PSYCHO-FREEP" telling others that they're insane. ;-)

"If you are offended by my definition of insanity,..."

I wasn't offended. I merely pointed out that it didn't apply to me in the instance that you cited. I've never voted third party before. Thus, if I do so in 2008, it will be hardly an instance of perseveration.

"...it is simply a fact that the most radical element of the conservative movement keep insisting that 'All or none' will save this country from ruin."

Gee, in that I've often said that the move toward protecting all unborn children in law will be a gradual one, I don't see that this applies to me.

However, as I've pointed out, that gradual change won't really get out of neutral gear until Roe goes.

As Alberta's Child has insightfully stated: Rudy embarked on his social liberalism jihad conducted even though Mayor Rudy had no legislative or elective mandate to do so. He obsessively pushed for abortion on demand, gay rights, and gun control, because he firmly believed in those issues.

Now Rudy is waking up to the fact that he goes nowhere without social conservatives. So he wants social conservatives to believe his ultra-liberalism was all a mistake.

Sure, Rudy should run----for president of Kazakhstan. As Borat indicated to Rolling Stone, you can tell those dumb Christians anything, and they'll believe you. Rudy should announce his intentions on Da Ali G Show.
