Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

Rick Rescorla - Battle of the Ia Drang - Viet Nam - 1965

My husband, Rick Rescorla, was one of the 3,000 Americans murdered by terrorists on 9/11/01. Rick was Vice President of Security for Morgan-Stanley/Dean-Witter, the largest tenant in the World Trade Center. His heroic actions on the day of the attack, along with his extraordinary foresight and preparation, saved the lives of 2,700 people. His story has been told on television and radio - in newspapers and magazines - and in the book Heart Of A Soldier, by Pulitzer Prize winner James B. Stewart. Rick is also on the cover of another book, We Were Soldiers Once... And Young, written by General Hal Moore and Joseph Galloway. You see, 9-11 was not the first time Rick had distinguished himself. 9-11 was just the last heroic chapter of his heroic life.

I am so very proud to have had him in my life. I want so to have his legacy live on. Two years ago Rick's friends and I decided to establish The Richard C. Rescorla Memorial Foundation in Rick's memory, to keep present the magnitude of Rick's life and to promote the virtues Rick lived by – duty, honor, and courage.

To that end we commissioned a bronze statue of Rick, based on that iconic photo of him at the Ia Drang. This statue will be placed on permanent display at the new National Infantry Museum to be built at Ft. Benning, Georgia. This statue was unveiled April 1, 2006 at a wonderful ceremony at the old museum and is now in storage there while the new museum is being built.
Many people contributed their time, effort, and money to this project. To each of you, I extend my deep gratitude and enduring appreciation.

Susan Rescorla"

JP, don't forget that Kelly Ripa, Rosie O'Donnell, and Clay Aiken are having some kind of three-way feud, and that has gotten more ink than the fact that a russian whistle-blower has been killed with some kind of nuke device, a Lebanese Cabinet Minister has been brutally assassinated, and Iran is going full speed ahead on weapons development.

It's frustrating what people find important.

JP, your sentiments are known in my heart as well. I don't "get" the worship of "things" mentality...never have...thankfully. People are surprised when they talk about the things they need...need to get their children, etc. My answer is always the same...my family have all that we will ever "need" with our family, our health, our faith, our friends, and too many real blessings to ever count. We do give one another gifts at Christmas, but we celebrate the real meaning of the season.

In a recent conversation with a co-worker, we were discussing our 10 year old sons. I was telling her how my son asks where we will be volunteering during Christmas. And he and my 8 year old know that part of the money that they receive throughout the year they will donate to a needy family or local charity. With our help they can easily make the determination on where their donation will go. It helps them realize how blessed they are...and that in giving do they really receive. This is how I grew up and I think it has always kept me grounded in reality. I want them to be grounded and take part in these choices now while they are young.

While I know that in some way this shopping boosts our economy, creates jobs for those in the retail sector, etc. I find the coverage and over-the-top need for "things" very distasteful. Makes me pay more attention to keep praying for Iraq, our soldiers, their families, the middle east, our society, our government, etc.

Democrats' Secret Weapons
Investor's Business Daily ^ | Nov. 24, 2006 | IBD

Intelligence: Senate Democrats are focusing their new powers on one thing above all else: wrenching as many national security secrets as possible from this White House and using them for political assassination.

Giving Leahy and his staff secrets would, quite simply, be a security risk. Since the 1980s, Leahy's nickname inside the Beltway has been "Leaky Leahy" because of his willingness to provide the press with juicy secrets to be used against Republican presidents.

"The American people," Leahy wrote in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, "deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism around the world."

Wrong. What the American people deserve from our government is not kowtowing to foreign criticism, but protection from terrorism. That is something President Bush has done to perfection — and Democrats seem willing to sacrifice protection in their crusade to destroy this presidency.

Ohio Firm Recalls Cooked Ham and Turkey Products For Possible Listeria Contamination

Recall Release CLASS I RECALL
FSIS-RC-033-2006 HEALTH RISK: HIGH

Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Amanda Eamich

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 2006 - HoneyBaked Foods Inc., a Holland, Ohio, firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 46,941 pounds of cooked ham and turkey products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels]
6- to 11-pound packages of "SLICED & GLAZED FULLY COOKED HALF HAM." Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears a package code between "6261" and "6310."
12- to 16- pound packages of "SLICED & GLAZED FULLY COOKED WHOLE HAM." Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears a package code between "6261" and "6310."
3-pound approximate weight packages of "SLICED AND GLAZED COOKED BONELESS TURKEY BREAST." Each package bears the establishment number "P-15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears the product code "30505 02099", as well as a package code between "6248" and "6258."
3-pound approximate weight packages of "SLICED AND GLAZED FULLY COOKED SMOKED BONELESS TURKEY BREAST." Each package bears the establishment number "P-15875" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each label also bears the product code "30504 02099", as well as a package code between "6248" and "6258."

Recommendations For People At Risk For Listeriosis

Wash hands with warm, soapy water before and after handling raw meat and poultry for at least 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. Immediately clean spills.

Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.

Do not eat hot dogs, luncheon meats, bologna or other deli meats unless reheated until steaming hot.

Do not eat refrigerated pate, meat spreads from a meat counter or smoked seafood found in the refrigerated section of the store. Foods that don't need refrigeration, like canned tuna and canned salmon, are safe to eat. Refrigerate after opening.

Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk and do not eat foods that have unpasteurized milk in them.

Do not eat salads made in the store such as ham salad, chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad or seafood salad.

Do not eat soft cheeses such as Feta, quesco blanco, quesco fresco, Brie, Camembert cheeses, blue-veined cheeses and Panela unless it is labeled as made with pasteurized milk.

Use precooked or ready-to-eat food as soon as you can. Listeria can grow in the refrigerator. The refrigerator should be 40 °F or lower and the freezer 0 °F or lower. Use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature of your refrigerator.

The ham and turkey labels also state "Dist. by HONEYBAKED FOODS INC., HOLLAND, OH 49528."

The ham and turkey products were produced between September 5 and November 13, and were sold at the company's retail stores and kiosks in the Toledo, Ohio, region, as well as through internet and telephone catalogue sales nationwide. HoneyBaked Foods Inc. has contacted catalogue sale customers who purchased products subject to recall.

The problem was discovered through the company's microbiological testing. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Consumers with questions about the recall should contact company Customer Service Hotline at (800) 461-3998. Media with questions about the recall should contact company Vice President of Public Affairs, Crises and Issues Management Steve Behm at (800) 461-4105.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/ Food_Safety_Education/ Ask_Karen/index.asp #Question. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.

Islamic jihadists in southern Thailand burn teacher alive
Will the Islamophobia never end?

"Insurgents in southern Thailand burn teacher alive," from Deutsche Presse Agentur, with thanks to Doc Washburn:

Bangkok - Insurgents shot a school director Friday afternoon in southern Thailand then set his vehicle on fire killing him in the flames, the English-language Bangkok Post newspaper website reported.
Police said the director of a school in Pattani province, 750 kilometres south of Bangkok, was shot in his pickup truck while driving out of school.

He was wounded but not killed in the shooting before insurgents set his pickup truck on fire. He was burned alive inside the truck.

Thailand's three predominately Muslim southernmost provinces have been increasingly restive the past three years, but no insurgent groups are claiming responsibility for the violence or making demands in exchange for stopping it.

Bangkok's new military-installed government has apologized to the people in the southern provinces for past injustices and is making a new approach to ending the violence peacefully a top priority.

It is the jihadists who should be apologizing, and being called upon to apologize.

I'll be dammed if some store is going to manipulate me into waking up at 4AM to go shopping at 5AM. And I really do love electronics. But I can get by without them.

I agree with your take on this. Too many people could care less about death in Iraq, or elsewhere. They just can't survive without their toys.

"Police probe Russian spy's death"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Counter-terrorism police investigating the death of Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko are examining hours of CCTV footage as they bid to crack the case.
Detectives are also trying to trace anyone he met around the time he initially fell ill on 1 November.

The officers have also asked the Kremlin for help, despite Russia denying any involvement in the death.

The ex-spy's death has been linked to the presence of a "major dose" of radioactive polonium-210 in his body.

Scotland Yard confirmed radioactive traces were also found at Mr Litvinenko's home, a sushi bar and a hotel, but the risk to others was said to be very low.

The Home Office said anybody concerned should contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647, who have been briefed about this issue."

ARTICLE SNIPPET #2: "A post-mortem examination on Mr Litvinenko has not yet been held.

The delay is believed to be over concerns about the health implications for those present at the examination."

"Toxic 'bomb' killed ex-spy"
By Peter Graff
REUTERS NEWS AGENCY
November 25, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "LONDON -- British authorities said a rare and highly toxic radioactive substance was found in the body of a former KGB spy who accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of his killing in a statement dictated on his deathbed.

"You may succeed in silencing one man, but a howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life," Alexander Litvinenko said in a statement read aloud by friends outside the hospital where he died.

"May God forgive you for what you have done, not only to me, but to beloved Russia and its people," said the statement, which Mr. Litvinenko dictated shortly before he died Thursday night. "

"Iran's Suicide Brigades
Terrorism Resurgent"
by Ali Alfoneh
Middle East Quarterly
Winter 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "More than five years after President George W. Bush's declaration of a global war against terrorism, the Iranian regime continues to embrace suicide terrorism as an important component of its military doctrine. In order to promote suicide bombing and other terrorism, the regime's theoreticians have utilized religion both to recruit suicide bombers and to justify their actions. But as some factions within the Islamic Republic support the development of these so-called martyrdom brigades, their structure and activities suggest their purpose is not only to serve as a strategic asset in either deterring or striking at the West, but also to derail domestic attempts to dilute the Islamic Republic's revolutionary legacy.

Such strategy is apparent in the work of the Doctrinal Analysis Center for Security without Borders (Markaz-e barresiha-ye doktrinyal-e amniyat bedun marz), an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps think tank.[1] Its director, Hassan Abbasi, has embraced the utility of suicide terrorism. On February 19, 2006, he keynoted a Khajeh-Nasir University seminar celebrating the anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's fatwa (religious edict) calling for the murder of British author Salman Rushdie. As Khomeini often did, Abbasi began his lecture with literary criticism. He analyzed a U.S. publication from 2004 that, according to Abbasi, "depicts the prophet of Islam as the prophet of blood and violence." Rhetorically, he asked, "Will the Western man be able to understand martyrdom with such prejudice? [Can he] interpret Islam as anything but terrorism?" The West sees suicide bombings as terrorism but, to Abbasi, they are a noble expression of Islam.

So what is terrorism if not suicide bombing? To Abbasi, terrorism includes any speech and expression he deems insulting to Islam."

Ultimatum six months to regulate Palestinian crisis with less 3e Intifada

CAIRO - the chief of Hamas, Khaled Mechaal, threatened Saturday to launch the third Intifada if the problem of a Palestinian State in the borders of 1967 were not regulated within six month.
